Has anyone any experience of bonding a spayed girl to a boy who cannot be neutered?

There is a boy bun up for re-homing by an animal rescue, but their vet has said he cannot be safely neutered. The woman from the rescue thinks they could well still bond fine, and with Gina spayed, we don’t need to worry about unplanned kits.

Apart from some anxieties that the two buns may just not get on, I’m also a bit concerned will he constantly keep mounting and annoy Gina, and also that he might spray her.

He is currently in a foster home, as no one wanted to take him from the rescue, and so he has been on his own in a hutch at the foster home for a while, waiting for his forever home, and this is a good chance for him. Like Gina, he was caught outside, and the rescue think he is a similar age, about a year old.

He is coming for a bun date tomorrow night, and if it looks hopeful that they might bond, and the foster mum is happy that I will provide a suitable home, she has said she will fill in the adoption papers there and then, and leave him here. The one thing I don’t want to happen is that she leaves him here, and then it doesn’t work out because he isn’t, and can’t be, neutered. I am going with the assumption that a vet who is experienced in rescue buns has good reason to refuse to neuter, and it won’t be worth getting a second opinion.

It will depend on the bunny date. Some unaltered males are terrible with nipping, mounting, territory, spraying, ect while some males dont do much of that at all. Youll have to see which way on the spectrum he falls when they meet during the bunny date tomorrow. If the foster willing to have multiple dates between the buns before signing the papers with you too? It might help for them to meet over the course of a few days before given the final “yes” or “no”

You might want a second opinion on the neuter as well. Youll also want to ask the vet in depth why he cannot be neutered. My second male cant be neutered due to abnormal blood levels, but my vet said there are a few things we could do to fix that so he can be neutered. She told us to get him on a more specific diet. Were going in tomorrow for him to get his second blood test to see if the diet helped. If not, she plans to talk to us about other options, if we want to proceed with getting him neutered in the future (and we do, only if safe, because hes become violent)

They don’t normally do bunny dates at all, I think we are only getting one as they don’t want him being sent back the next day if we have the kind of issues you describe. The reason given for not neutering is that one testicle is so deeply embedded in his abdomen that the risk is just too high. If its not clear how things will go I will ask if he can stay overnight before signing the paperwork, and I have kept Thursday completely clear, so I can spent all day with Gina and this boy bun if he does stay.

Poor Gina spent all day cuddled up against the bars separating her from Pippi and Gina, so I think she has realised its no fun being on your own
