So, I have a female Dwarf rabbit who I have had for 6ish years now and we are in the process of seeing if she is spayed or not because if not I want to get her spayed. I also have an in-tact lop earred male who I don’t want to get fixed unless necessary. I’ve read in a lot of places that it’s a bad idea to bond a a spayed and un-neutered male but I was wondering if it’s still possible or safe. The two seem to get along and the male who is also 5 or 6 years old has no hormonal behaviors. He was alone the five years prior to me taking him in and the only thing he ever does is lay there and let her do whatever. She sits next to him sometimes. Honestly, my Dwarf is the boss. The point is that they work together. Is this okay? I would really like to avoid neutering the male because he’s been under a few times for his teeth and it scares me for him to go under if it can be avoided. The female I am going to spay if she’s not only because I don’t want babies if he gets an idea but he hasn’t in the year that I have had him and they kind of do their own thing when they are out together. Any questions I will answer. This question has already probably been asked but most of the things I read people have had really hormonal males and mine is not like that at all.

There are people who have done it, but I think it’s a bit risky. After being spayed her scent will change, and you don’t know how your boy will react to that. He could become aggressive or he could start actually showing hormonal behaviors. It’s honestly a mixed bag. The majority of people on here would tell you that you’re playing with fire for even having them out together while they are both unfixed because she could obviously become pregnant or even have a false pregnancy. I think if you did attempt it, you would really have to be gradual about it. Prebonding for 1-2 months while her hormones die down from the surgery, because her hormones will be all over the place once she’s spayed. So prebond for 1-2 months, then start slowly reintroducing them to each other. If he starts showing hormonal behaviors, keep them separate and get him neutered.

So if it turns out she is already spayed and thats how they act then its fine? I honestly think she is spayed but theres always that little bit of doubt. Im checking with the previous owner to see if they fixed her because the only way for the vet to know is to open her up.

Surely she’d have a scar if she’s been spayed so couldn’t the vet check for that?

I have a spayed doe with an intact buck, but only because two vets agreed it was too risky to alter him as he never dropped and they get on, but that is the exception not the norm, and not recommended.

if neither of yours are altered and you are allowing them to spend time together you are risking a pregnancy in the time your back is turned. Scars can be hard to see, so assume she isn’t unless you can find out for sure she is, also when is your boy next due to have his teeth done, he could maybe be altered the same time, if the doe isn’t altered she needs doing asap as she may well already be expecting by your buck
