Bonding Bunnies

Hi Everyone!

I am so glad that I found this forum! 

I have a male lionhead bunny that is about a year old, and he was neutered in the beginning of June. I recently brought home a female Holland Lop that is two months old.

I started off putting the bunnies in a neutral area (bathtub) and immediately the male began to mount the female constantly. I have taken it day by day, and my male bunny is just constantly excessively chasing the new rabbit, mounting/humping and after about 10 seconds I will separate him. Seconds later he runs to find her to do the same thing, over and over, non stop. She just takes it, although I feel bad for her and want to separate them. She doesn’t seem to mind – she still binkies and looks like a happy bunny.

Also, after he gets off of her, I find areas where he produced a liquid that contains white stuff? Which is making me a little nervous with the idea of her impregnating her.

For now, I have them separated and I’m not sure if I should wait until she is a little older and spayed to try again.

Has anyone else experienced a bun with excessive chasing and mounting? Is this considered an unsuccessful bond? Any tips to try again?

Do you know how long is has been since he was neutered? Male rabbits can still impregnate females for up to thirty days after being neutered. I would wait until you get the female spayed and she has recovered before bonding them. She’ll eventually get hormonal herself and territorial, which will make the bonding a lot harder. While it can be possible to bond them, things will go more smoothly if you wait to get the female spayed. Also I’m pretty sure being around a male while the female isn’t spayed could cause her to have a false pregnancy. Or at least, there’s a possibility of it.

Also I’m currently bonding a trio, and one of my two neutered males keeps humping the other neutered one. Then it leads to fights. I have been taking them in car trips every day for about four days now. I put them in a carrier together. This will likely frighten them, and if the carrier is small, force them to be beside each other. You could also try other forms of stress bonding.

Sometimes it can take up to 2 months for the semen to fully leave the male rabbits body after a neuter. Most of the time its naturally drained within a month, but sometimes it takes longer. As Kittensmew said, i would keep them separated until your female is spayed and has recovered from the spay. Itll help with bonding, and ensure no chance of accidental pregnancies

Thank you both for your advice!!! I will definitely wait until she is old enough to spay, and try the bond again when she’s all healed.

Kittensmew- it has actually been exactly a month since he’s been neutered (June 1st).
