Hi guys! I am curious how to introduce a cat to my bonded pair. I have read different things on google, but this site is like my bunny bible (LOL). I know this may sound weird, but I get so worried that when one of my rabbits pass away, the other will be so sad ( as will I) and I want another animal in the mix. I’m not opposed to a third rabbit, but I love cats as well. I feel like an older cat would be best? Kittens are just too crazy and scratchy

What experience do people have with bonding a cat?

**also, my apt is small. 600 square feet. Bunnies have free range of the living room. Then it’s my bedroom then kitchen/bathroom. No doors in my apartment (silly old Salem homes). I do have a small gate and a shower curtain blocking my room and the living room tho (to help with the air conditioner) but with a cat would I need to figure out a door?

Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Well, we had cats before we got a rabbit. Our cats are ages 13 years old to 3 years old. When Bun Bun came home, I kept her confined until I thought the cats would be ok. Turned out, they are scared of her. She chases them around. The youngest cat, Thomas, and Bun Bun play the most together. He still isn’t quite sure about her, even after 3 months, but he does play the most with her. The others just run and hide. I have no real advice but good luck. And from my experience, they will surprise you more than you think.

I’ve had many cats and rabbits over the years. While there have never been any issues or fighting, I can’t say any of them were really friends. They sort of just co-exist. I wouldn’t expect to really bond a cat with your rabbits. Different species, not to mention prey/predator. Although, there are bunnies and cats who are friendly and snuggle, I don’t think it’s very common to really have a bonded cat and bunny.

Thanks guys! I’m going to try it. I’m mostly worried about the cat scratching the bunz and that can get bad for them as we all know. So I’ll keep them separated and supervised for a while! Even if they just coexist I will be happy

                UPDATE

I’ve had patches for about 3 weeks now and it’s going great! I kept her in my bedroom/kitchen for the first week. She’s a super timid cat so I wanted her to start to adjust. I’d carry her into the living room to watch the bunnies and she’d hiss so I’d leave with her. Then slowly she would lay on the top of the couch and just watch. No hissing at all! she’s more daring and will jump up when I’m there (there’s a gate to keep them in separate rooms). And she will lay with me. The buns will jump up and investigate. She kinda ignores them for a minute but then runs off. Things are going in the right direction. My goal is to have her lay with me and the bunnies! All on the couch . I don’t have a life ha. But I’m being patient and slow with them still.

                  UGH

All is good with the three of them. The cat is still afraid and run off, but she does come in to the living room more and seems more tolerant when they’re sniffing her.

Today though- the cat was laying on the ottoman and started to cough up a hairball. Which scared thumper who ran off , spilled my coffee, and freaked Lucy out where she then peed on the couch right next to me and poor patches threw up on the couch.
I was out of paper towels. 😐
Quite the morning here at my house!!
