Hi! So boyfriend and I have had our bunny Mimi for about 6 months now. She’s gone through puberty and is hormonal AF but we currently live in Portugal and spaying females isn’t a common practice. We are really going to try to find a rabbit specialist for her because she’s gotten slightly aggressive and humps a lot (side note, we are seriously questioning if she is actually a girl bc she humps this mini soccer ball in her cage and sometimes there’s like a wetness on it after……boy? girl?). BUT I always thought that she needed a pal because we work and sometimes we can’t give her the attention she so desperately craves, so we got her another gal pal (this one we know for sure is a girl). Mona Lisa is like the total opposite of Mimi, even when Mimi was her age… so sweet and delicate.

So, to the bonding. We have left Mona in her cage next to Mimi’s puppy pen for weeks, gave Mimi a stuffed animal with Mona’s scent (which she humped for like 4 days constantly but then she eventually kind of just ignored it), let them sniff each other through a sifter, all to see if Mimi would like calm tf down and get used to Mona being around. Like 20 mins ago I finally got the nerve to let them be around each other in the tub. It seemed alright for about.. 2 minutes. Mimi didn’t really care about Mona and Mona was just chillin. Then Mimi went to sniff her, and again seemed alright although we were a bit on edge, but she didn’t bite or attack at all. Then Mimi started to mount her and Mona just kind of took it, and we moved Mimi away but she was on a mission to get back on Mona. At one point boyfriend was like ok this is too much and tried to get Mimi and when we pulled her off she had Mona’s hair in her mouth ((. Then we decided to up the ante and add a little bit of water to the tub to see if that would stress Mimi out enough, but she literally could not care any less about the water and just wanted to hump Mona! Mona, bless her little soul, just kind of took it and didn’t really seem bothered at all. Even when we put Mimi back and let Mona have some range of the room all she wanted to do was go over to Mimi and sniff her  Should we have let Mimi kind of get it out of her system? Or would she have hurt Mona??

So… is this worth trying? Or should we just try to get Mimi spayed before attempting again. So many questions!!!  I think that after this little session that Mimi would really benefit from getting spayed because she is like so humpy and hormonal and PMSing all the time!! And it all breaks my heart cause I want them to be friends! Ugh.. SOS

You can’t bond until all involved are spayed. They’ll both need spaying for health anyway.

I know but we didn’t know that vets here (Portugal) don’t really spay females. It just isn’t common to do here. As I said, we are looking for a specialist that will do it but right now we haven’t had much luck. That’s why we are looking for some tips on how to deal with it until we are able to get them spayed.

You cannot bond unspayed females safely. You are very much risking life threatening fights trying to bond them while they are not spayed. If you cannot find a vet, it is safer not to bond them at all… Especially given that you now think one is a boy. You are risking accidental litters, which is very much not a good thing given the vet situation. Unless you can keep all of the babies separate once they reach breeding age, you should not put your current to rabbits together.
