Bonded Girl Humping ALL DAY EVERY DAY

Hello, everyone!

I have a pair of bonded rabbits–bonded for about 6 months–and they have had an extremely tranquil relationship. Both of them are very low key, affectionate bunnies (5 years+ ) who just like to groom, loaf, flop, eat, and snuggle, with occasional petting by me.

When they were first bonding, the male (Vadim, a mini lop) humped the female (Chubby, a lionhead who isn’t overweight) only 2 or 3 times total. I think Chubby humped him a couple times, too, and I hadn’t seen them do it since, in 6 months.

Now, all of a sudden, my female is trying to hump the male at least 30-40 times a day! I mean, just CONSTANTLY humping him, face and butt. She’s never done anything like this before. He’s not humping her back, and he’s such a good boy that he is never aggressive with her–he just lazily tries to escape, and then eventually gives in. But whereas it used to be just about 10-12 times a day, now it seems like Vadim can’t even stop to eat or rest at all, because Chubby is climbing all over him. I’m afraid it might be putting Vadim under a lot of stress. They still groom each other during the rare times she isn’t trying to mount him, but I worry it might damage their relationship.

What should I do??!

Has anything changed in their area lately? Has this started only recently?

whew O.o….my condolences go out to your Vadim… I’m asking, just to make clear, at 5 yrs old.. has Chubby been spayed?

My guess, is going to go in the way ( if she was spayed ) , to recaging them, separately, and reintroducing them, at a later time.. letting them be close proximity cage-mates, between bars, for some time.

I’m not sure, I my info, is sound, but… just the first obvious thing, I would consider, were I in your shoes.. I hope things sort out soon, cheers, & welcome !

@Mikey, recently I had to take them to the vet because Vadim had a skin issue, and it turned out that they have fleas, and Vadim was scratching his head so much he had a bald spot. (I was especially upset because I check them for fleas, and I took Vadim in as soon as I saw the bald spot–he’s so furry, you couldn’t tell!) I gave him prescribed antibiotics and gave both of the buns flea treatment, and I put them in the bathroom and vacuumed their whole living area. So, that’s new… the humping started probably a week or so after I gave Vadim the last dose of antibiotics. (His head is doing a lot better now, he’s growing fur back and it’s an adorable tiny fuzzy patch.)

@Yoyo: I’ve gotten Chubby checked up many times… when I adopted her from a kill shelter, they told me she was spayed. She was 2.5 years old. The rabbit vet couldn’t find any green tattoo on her or sign of surgical scars on her, but at the time I didn’t have money to get an X-ray to make certain. Then I had no money for about a year, lol. Then I got money right as they were due for an annual check up; went to another vet, who also didn’t see signs of spaying, but she said that based on Chubby’s extremely calm and friendly nature, she may have been spayed by way of “Hemaclips,” which she said were inserted and sort of tied the tubes. Now I finally have money after my tax returns, so maybe I should just get an X-ray to see for certain if she’s spayed or not…

If the shelter spayed Chubby, they should have a record of it. I wonder if you could contact them and ask them to send you a printout of the spay procedure? That way, you wouldn’t have to spend money and make a trip to the vet. When I adopted my last rabbit from a shelter, they neutered him first and they gave me paperwork showing the date and the name of the doctor who performed the surgery, etc.
