I know that when your rabbit is hot s/he ears will become hot so that they can cool off. But how do you tell if they are cold? I know there ears will turn cold in order for the rest of there body to be warm, but how cold is to cold ( not outside temperature but there ears)?

Lulu’s ears are cool, and I have never felt them cool before, they were always warm or hot. so just curious. I know she isn’t sick because she isn’t showing any other signs of sickness. I just was wondering if I should make it a little warmer for her, and so I will know for the future.

        Thanks!

If there ears are cool it usually means they are trying to conserve heat. What temperature is your home?

Yes, that temperature is fine. I keep my home between 65 and 70. Rabbits can tolerate colder temperatures.

I have often wondered about my bunnies ears being cool- my lop, Nelli, has these big warm ears, but my little up-ear dwarf, Bun, has tiny little ears that get very chilly. I considered earmuffs, but he said no…
I do know that when BunBun was sick, his ears were freezing- not just cool, and he shivered. So unless your bun is shivering or obviously trying to find someplace warm, he is probably comfy. Our house is 62-65 F in the winter, and our buns do fine.

Do NOT open any links from a strange, unrelated reply you find anywhere on the site. It’s a multiple-User name spammer. Good grief.

Nothing good, mocha. someone came on as a user with multiple user names in order to spam us inside other people’s posts. There were two (so far). One here and one in a Support section post. I sent an alert to BB, deleted the posts, and she’s deleted the phony member. Hopefully that will take care of it, but if you see a post that’s a terrible non-sequetor or jibberish, especially with any links, DON’T OPEN THE LINKS and send an Alert to us (button on the right) so we can delete it asap.

I’ve never noticed a problem with bunny’s ears being cool to the touch. It’s kind of like our skin cooling off. It happens. It’s a very long way from being too cold for other reasons. Just try not to get your house below 55-65 degrees and a bunny is going to be comfortable.

Many times when I have been holding Griffin, my English Lop with huge ears,  I was convinced he peed on me because it felt so warm- but it was just his ears.  My husband has been fooled too.

My bunnies always have cool ears if they have been asleep for a while – probably because their body temp drops during sleep (like ours) and their ears react to conserve heat. Their ears get warm again when they’re moving around. Their ears do seem colder in the winter, but that’s normal, just the way your hands might be colder to the touch in the winter as your body tries to conserve heat – doesn’t mean you’re too cold, just that it’s cool enough to make your hands cold, if that makes sense.

Like Sarita said, I don’t think there’s any way to tell if they are too cold based on ear temp.
