I just rescued two buns from a home where there weren’t wanted anymore… One has a blue eye and doesn’t really react to noise. He’s a very sweet boy. Could he be deaf? I’ve never seen a bun with blue eyes. Also what breed do you think he is? The other bun I think is pregnant. I have a vet appointment tomorrow to get them both seen and checked. Boy will probably be neutered then. If she is pregnant what do I need to prep for this? Thanks in advance

Buns with blue eyes generally have the vienna gene, I can’t remember the details but it causes blue eyes (either full or parital), and white patches in the fur. I don’t know that deafness is associated with the vienna gene, however I do know that cats with blue eyes, and similarly with dogs are more likely to be deaf, or even in just the one ear associated with the eye on that side. Could just be a very chill rabbit too

Don’t have enough time to comment on the pregnancy thing at this time, but will check back in later

There are different types of blue eyes. One is caused by the dilute gene, the other by the Vienna gene. I have never heard of deafness being associated with blue eyes. Wooly has blue eyes and he is definitely not deaf. Leopold, on the other hand, is deaf. He has brown eyes. But he’s a Holland and deafness is relatively common in that breed.

I can’t see a photo of your bunny. Did you try to upload one?

I recently asked that same question. I have a blue eyed white mini lop. I knew about dogs being predisposed to deafness with that colouring, but from the responses I got most people didn’t seem think that was the case with bunnies.

There is a link between BEW and seizures, but I’m not aware of it being linked to deafness.

Taloan- you bunny looks like a Holland in your avatar. I know they call them different things in different countries.

Sorry, had to edit that. For some reason, my phone liked REW better than BEW. LOL

Sorry I thought It posted the picture of the little male. I was told he’s a bit under weight so hoping to get his weight settled before getting him neutered. He wasn’t reacting to noises when i first brought him home but now he’s starting to so maybe not deaf. Is there anything special to know about the care of a rabbit with blue eyes?

LBJ10- to be honest I have no idea. I had adopted a rescue Holland lop who sadly passed away and then got this guy who I was told was a mini lop. They definitely had different builds, but I’m basically just taking the word of who I got it from. I just picked him because he was cute.

                      Hi! <3

I’ve a blued eyed white bunny (a lionhead) who is defined not deaf . As for any special care, I’ve noticed Tambor is quite sensitive to light and has had some mild eye problems (watering, redness and itching) when he has been in stressful situations. Otherwise he’s a healthy bunbun.

Let us know what the vet says

Taloan – Well, of course he’s cute! LOL His ears look long for a Holland, but he has that smooshed face of a Holland. At least that’s what it looks like in the picture. Maybe he just doesn’t meet breed standards? Or he’s a mix? Or he’s a minilop and just looks a little different from that angle? Haha! Leopold is a Holland, but he’s a big boy. He weighs well over 4 lbs.

Lyssbaby – Have you tried doing some experiments to see if he reacts to noise? I can tell you some of the things we did with Leopold. The vet did look at his ears and couldn’t see anything wrong. But we did some tests to see if we could get a reaction out of him. It was pretty clear that he is deaf.
