hello, so recently I found blood in my rabbit’s litter box. She is a 4 year old lion head rabbit and she is not sprayed. At first I thought that it was red urine, but she began to pass these jelly-like-substance red clots (and I assumed that they were blood clots). I attached a photo just in case (its cat litter around the clot)

I was cleaning her litter box one day and I guess she really had to use the washroom, but since it was being cleaned, she just urinated on the cage floor. But as I went to clean it up, I saw that it was just blood, like there wasn’t blood mixed with urine, it was just a small puddle of blood. Naturally, I was really worried so I booked an appointment to the vet straightaway.

When we took her to the vet, she got an urine analysis and an xray done. The results came back and apparently there was nothing wrong with/in her urine and the X-rays showed nothing wrong either. The doctor suggested to do an ultrasound, but my parents decided against it because it was too expensive. Since nothing wrong was detected in her urine, as from the X-rays as well, and my parents did not want to go through with the ultrasound, the vet gave us some antibiotics to give to Mocha to treat the blood as an uterine infection. Unfortunately, the medicine didn’t work and she began to pass blood again.

We decided to get a second opinion so we took Mocha to another rabbit-savvy vet. We told the other vet about the results from the previous tests (the urine analysis and the xray) and she said that from the looks of the results, it is most likely something wrong regarding the uterus. She also suggested an ultrasound to see what is wrong, but the services at this vet cost even more than the first vet so we told her that we would get back to her.

So its been a few days since the second vet visit and I’m still very worried because Mocha is still urinating blood. She is still eating, pooping, and drinking as normal, and she is running around and playing around as normal as well, but I mean like blood in the litter box is never a good sign. Basically, I was just wondering if anybody ever had any experience with a situation like this and would like to share some advice?

I was thinking of just getting her sprayed because it is most likely an uterus involved problem and if we get her sprayed it would solve the issue right? But I was just wondering if there are other causes of urinating blood and if we should get the ultrasound done? Its just that vet bills are very expensive and my parents aren’t very willing to spend more money, so I don’t exactly want to do the ultrasound and get her sprayed, if just getting her sprayed will solve the issue. I know we should have gotten her sprayed beforehand, but it is expensive

I’m sorry this is so long, thanks for everyone who spent the time reading it. I hope it isn’t too confusing.

You should really have the ultrasound done if you can afford it. It will tell you if the bleeding is caused from inside her organs or if its caused from a tear in her urethra. Since she is not spayed, you also have to check her for uterine cancer, which unspayed females rabbits are prone to getting. I believe, but am not totally sure, that one of the signs is bloody urine

I think you should have her spayed, didn’t any of the vets suggest an emergency spay? These problems are common in unspayed buns at around the age of your bun’s age, and it can be endometriosis or uterine cancer. The risk of uterine cancer is really high in unspayed doe. In any case, having the bun spayed would get rid of the problem.

You could ask the vet, maybe you’d not need the ultrasound done. (Money saved). An ultrasound is just a diagnosti method, the underlying problem must still be addressed.

I had a male rabbit that once started passing red jelly-like substance. It was quite bright in colour, until it dried. The vet thought it might be due to cystitis. This needs to be treated with appropriate antibiotic plus anti-inflammatory pain medication.

I was thinking of just getting her sprayed because it is most likely an uterus involved problem and if we get her sprayed it would solve the issue right?

I was going to suggest this. To just go ahead and have a spay. If it is to do with uterus, this is the treatment. Ask one of the vets you saw if they think this is okay to do given her symptoms. They may suggest some bloodwork first.

Are you able to try post the photo again?

It might be worth contacting this clinic to find out about cost of a rabbit spay. They seem to have a low cost program but I do not know if this is only for cats and dogs. http://unionvet.ca/
