So I FINALLY picked up Archie for more than 2 seconds.    I had to wrap him in multiple blankets so he wouldn’t wiggle out.  I found his anal scent glands (yay…kind of ).  It smelled but I couldn’t see anything, so I’m guessing they don’t need cleaned?  I even looked at his nails and got the pedipaw thing to file them down…grabbed his paw, he looked at me “I don’t think so ma!” and nipped at me; the little bugger!    I looked where he was neutered to make sure it looked ok.  The left spot was ok but the right one had a black mark.  Maybe a scap or something?  He did have an infection, so maybe it was something to do with that.  I touched it and it didn’t bother him.  I think it’s ok but just to make sure, want a second opinon since I never dealed with a neutered rabbit before.

You sure it isn’t a scab?   If you are able to hold bun still and rub your finger on it you could tell that way.   Otherwise I would not know why a bunny had a black spot on the surgical site.  Is it big?  Like a stitch which would be small?  Is it one of those stitches that would be absorbed by the skin and fade away?

Could be from the cured infection a scab.  You might call the vet and ask him/her to give it a check.  They should no fee. Hopefully the vet isnt’ very far from you.  Or a vet tech could take a quick peek.

Haha, I can’t spell, I meant scab. It’s about an inch, inch and a half big.  He was neutered before we adopted him.  I try to take another look at him; if he’ll let me.  There’s hair over it, so you have to move the hair around to see it.

Has he had his stitches removed already? That black thing sounds like it could be a scab but the incision for a neuter is very small-I’d think you might want to take him in for a quick exam with your vet just incase!

It is possible that he just bruised badly from the surgery. You said you touched it – did it feel like the rest of his skin or was it flaky like a scab?

It’s never a bad thing to be overly cautious when it comes to rabbits. unfortunately for me, I’ve watched too much House lately and the only other thing I can think of that causes skin to be black – like black black – and feel scabby or sticky is necrotic tissue which would be bad.

Isn’t modern entertainment great for making you paranoid?

I have no clue about the incision or anything since he was neutered from his previous owners when they found him.  The stiches were gone when I adopted him.  It kind of sucks not knowing his past.  I think it feels like it’s part of the skin, but I’m going to have my husband look at it since he’s taken classes in first aid and see what he thinks.  Thanks guys!

be sure to look at other areas of his skin too.  It could be the pigment of the skin.  My female dog has some big pigment “freckles” on her belly that are noticeable as the fur is not as thick on the belly.  But bunnies have pretty thick fur everywhere- so try to check to see if you see it anywhere else maybe.

Necrotic tissue would smell and be foul, and i would think any sign of infection would be red, weepy, etc.

Can you take a pic and post it?  (poor Archie- not what he was hoping to have posted on the internet!)

He’s a stubborn little guy. Unfortunately I can’t take a picture since my camera doesn’t connect to a mac and there’s so much fur you can’t really see it that much. Next time I’m at the vet I’ll ask her.
It doesn’t smell and it’s not red. Not irritating him or anything. I’ll keep you guys posted.
