There are at least 7 birds of prey in your area, and while I don’t know how many could actually carry away a rabbit, there are at least a couple. So yes, keep your rabbits under cover if they are outside.

Listed species: Golden Eagle (can definitely abduct your rabbit!), the Common Buzzard (rabbits are it’s main diet!), the Hobby (not big enough), the Merlin (small but aggressive), the Goshawk (in small numbers, but still there!), the Sparrow Hawk (small, but does hunt small mammals), and the Peregrine Falcon (sizable, and sneaky when it hunts).

I had a baby bird that was taken right from literally under my nose by a hawk or falcon or something. I threw a shoe and the hawk dropped him. The bird started flying away but the hawk caught him again. It was so freaking traumatic.

Just this minute I was watching out my window where several ducks are around the pond with their new chicks, and one mother left her babes unattended. A crow just carried one off. I was so upset I ran out and went over to the remaining 4 babies. Well, that got the mother back pronto. She stayed with them until just now, when two bratty boys, about 6 or 7 years old, ran over and threw some big thing (I think it was a palm frond) at them! The mother got the chicks in the water and they swam away fast. I went out and just hollered at the boys like a meanie neighbor woman and said “Don’t throw anything at live animals EVER. I don’t want to see you throwing things at those baby ducks or anything else. Do you understand me?” They stopped dead and both nodded, then watched me as they walked away. What a night!

There are though, and they are doing a lot to bring them back to Ireland! They are continuously releasing new breeding pairs and such. So what I’m saying is that even if now there aren’t any, expect to see more and more within the next 5-15 years so don’t get too comfortable having your rabbits out about. Plus there is the risk of cats and other predators.
