I took Bindi to the vet yesterday morning after calling the vet and asking if she thought I should bring him in to get his ears checked. Don’t you hate when you go in the waiting room with your bun and there is a bunch of loud, whinny dogs there? Bindi was terrified and we had to wait like a 1/2 hour. Poor guy.

So the vet checked his ears and couldn’t believe the amount of wax buildup. She said there was more than likely a reason his ears were producing so much. She tried cleaning it all out to see his eardrum but wasn’t able to. She checked the buildup under the microscope and confirmed there is bacteria in his ears.

I have to give him Baytril 2x a day for a week and clean his ears with a rinse every day. In a week, we have to go for a recheck and she will hopefully be able to get a better look at his ears and then we will start on ear drops to rid all of the bacteria. She said it’s possible it’s a deep infection but she thinks it’s a pretty small chance as there is no other signs, no ear scratching, no vertigo, etc. I’m still worried though, what if it’s something really bad? I’m just trying my best to not think about it.

Poor Bindi (and poor me). He’s going to be so traumatized after this. Bindi is almost impossible to give oral meds to. He has a pretty flat face and just squishes his face into the towel burrito and makes it really hard to open his mouth. And he HATES having his ears rinsed. I bought him some fresh pineapple chunks to hopefully make up for some of it. I just love him so much, I hate doing anything to make him unhappy because he doesn’t understand it’s for his own good.

Stormy is totally jealous and being bratty because of all the attention Bindi is getting. I’ll be spending a lot of time spoiling them all this week!

Have you tried crushing the pills and putting them in applesauce or some canned fruit they usually gobble that right up. Awe Poor Bindi.  she will be ok.

****vibes**** Poor Bindi. Have you tried pinning your guy on the ground and feeding? I had to perfect my own method of this in order to get my two to take meds. Kneel, cross your ankles behind you to form a triangle, squat down (don’t squish bunny) while setting your bunny either in a burrito or out and gently pin with your knees, them facing the same way you are (outward from your crossed ankles). This way when you come at them with the syringe and they back up, they back up into your feet and have to face the syringe in front of them. I really hate doing this, but when you have bunnies that flat-out refuse every gentle method known to man kind and they need meds, you’ll do just about anything.

In loopy’s case b4 we figured out crushing her tablet and mixing it with fruit    it took 2 of us to get his meds in him.

1 to hold him and another to put meds in.  they can be difficult

Ahhhhh there we go!! Good thing the vet found out why!! Well at least once it’s under control you’ll likely no longer have to clean them every day!!
I had to do a round of Baytril 2X a day with Pacino (shelter bun) after his absess surgery, and apparently Baytril is yucky!!

Here’s what I tried and it sort of worked, I mixed the dose with a very small amount of the veggie+ juice (Tastes like fruit but has a serving of veggies in it too-it’s for humans) banana strawberry kind. The other thing I did was mix the dose with a very small amount of baby food. I say small because you don’t want to have force feed yucky-baytrill-flavoured juice for hours….Just like half and half so it’s double the amount but flavoured nicer.

Well I’ll keep my prayers going that this resolves the problem and no further treatment is needed. Poor Bindi and poor you! (hugs) Now don’t start worrying for things that aren’t necessarily there, I know I do that and it doesn’t help a thing.

I hope you’ll both be doing better soon. I wish I had more help for you.

Bindi was a bit better taking his meds this morning. It’s in a liquid form and the vet added a fruity flavour so it doesn’t smell too bad but I imagine it’s the texture too…really weird for a bunny. As soon as he takes it all I give him a big chunk of pineapple to get the taste away. It would help if he didn’t always have such a terribly sad look on his face.

The vet said the Baytril might make his poo a bit runny. I’ve found the opposite. His poos are a bit smaller than usual (but he’s still pooping pretty much the same amount). Did anyone else experience any side effects with Baytril?

I’ve heard baytril does have quite a few side effects but it is good stuff. Many rabbits get an upset stomach from this. Usually if it’s compounded I find that it’s not too difficult to administer too if it’s flavored with fruit.

Bindi may just be prone to ear infections like some children are.

Oh that’s great they added flavour! The plain stuff really stunk and Pacino just hated it!

Little Puffy tail- the Baytril that they sent home for Bindi was it tablet?  or clear liquid?  There should be some ways of making it taste better.  How much are you giving?
