Sorry to make you guys worry! My comp got a major virus attack and is out of commission and I had to wait until I could get to another computer. Bindi is okay but VERY lucky to be alive. What a weekend from you know where.
Later the day he got sick, I was able to get him into an emergency clinic in the afternoon. He got x-rayed and it showed his stomach to be extremely distended with gas and matter. No visible blockage but he said with something like cotton fibers it would be very hard to see anyways. He got fluids and pain meds.
When we got home and through the evening he got much worse. Very lethargic and grinding his teeth. His tummy felt huge and became really hard. Because of a stupid feud going on in the vet community the emerg vet said he could only see me the once or he could get into trouble. There is nothing worse than seeing your bun in pain and being totally helpless.
We started a rotation of critical care, simethicone and tummy massages. It was rough because he is extremely hard to force feed. One thing I credit to his recovery is we had some iv fluids and a butterfly catheter from the vet the last time he was sick (we didn’t give it to him last time because he got better before we needed to). Ricky put the needle in him and we gave him some fluids. It was really hard and I’m so thankful Ricky was able to do it. We did this twice in the almost 30 hours he didn’t eat or poop. We stayed up with him all night. He just sat on the couch all night, off and on grinding his teeth. We were convinced it was the end. We spent the night comforting him and saying our goodbyes. I knew it was close because he was acting like my others before they died. This was so heartbreaking. He kept looking at me and I swear he was trying to tell me something. I really felt it. He was telling me he wasn’t done yet. When the morning came around I thought he made it through the night for a reason. He was so brave with the pain and he didn’t give up. We continued the treatments all day. Around 3 pm on Sunday he took a piece of pineapple and lettuce. I started cryng I was so happy. He was on the floor on a blanket near the couch and Ricky was on the couch and said he kept smelling something like rotten cabbage. He thought Bindi was passing gas. Eventually I lifted up Bindi and under him was a huge cow patty. I know runny poo is bad in rabbits but I thought it was at least good that something was coming out. Withing the next 24 hours his poo was pretty much back to normal although he didn’t have his energy or appettite back to normal. I’m very happy to report today he gobbled up all his meals and did some binkies last night. What an ordeal. He is a very strong little guy to pull through that. I was so scared because I know the longer the digestive system doesn’t move the less likely a recovery. He didn’t eat or poop for about 30 hours.
So we don’t know if it was a blockage, if it was, he beat the odds and survived it. I read recovery with and without surgery is very unlikely. I felt terrible also for making a joke about him killing his hippo. No more cloth anything for him. I kept telling Bindi that if he got better I would make him his condo cage this weekend so I gotta get busy on that.
Thanks for all the concern guys. I knew you would all be worried about the no update and I felt terrible but I couldn’t get online until now. I’m hoping to get my computer fixed this week. I’m just glad to let you guys know he’s okay.
