Bindi was choking/gagging-extreme scary

Bindi’s always been a big pellet pig. He just inhales them. A few times, he’s been eating pellets and acting like one got stuck in his throat. He would stop eating, get a funny look on his face, drool and I could tell he was swallowing really hard for like a minute and then be fine and go back to eating. I started sprinkling his pellets around his condo so he isn’t able to eat them so fast but he still does. He gets super frantic and looks like a little vaccuum cleaner, trying to eat them as fast as he can.

Last night he gave us a horrible scare. He was eating his bedtime pellets (which is just a sprinkle) and he started doing the “pellet-stuck-in-throat” thing but it lasted much longer, he was drooling excessively and seemed to be quite distressed. Then he started having a loud rumbling sound to his breathing. He gagged, wide mouthed, 3 times and drool came out. It looked and sounded like a cat trying to hack up a hairball. I was so panicked and felt so helpless. This lasted for maybe 5 minutes (though it seemed much longer) and then he was fine and started eating hay. I wasn’t sure what happened, whether it was just stuck in his windpipe or, I feared, because of the breathing sounds, aspirated a piece. Can that even happen with food?

 

So starting this morning, he’s getting a plate full of pellets fluffed up with water. He actually enjoyed it, I though he would snub it for sure. 

He has a vet apt. for his ears on Wednesday so I will make sure to mention it and have her check his breathing. He probably needs his teeth done soon too, but I really don’t think that’s what caused this.

Oh no, poor you and Bindi. I know you don’t think it’s his teeth, but I would have her do a very thorough dental check.

Oh no!! Peppy is much the same way with her pellets and this has happened to her before…so frightening to watch . Sometimes I like to spread out her pellets to make her forage and slow her down too. I hope Bindi is feeling alright!
