I posted a little while back when I found some hard, pink lumps on Stormy’s heels. I found out that’s pretty normal for Mini-Rex’s and not sore hocks. Well last night, Bindi (my Mini-Lop) was laying on the bed, bear rug style, and I just happened to take a peek at his feet. (I rarely touch his feet because he HATES it and will jump up and run away if you touch them.). His feet look perfectly fine at first glance, covered in fur (he has pretty furry feet) but on his heels if you move some fur aside he has pink lumps that look like callouses but they are soft and flaky. Not bleeding but I can’t tell if they are sore or not when I touch them because he freaks out anyways. He has no problems hopping or running.

Now I’m really worried that this is sore hocks or the beginning of sore hocks. They differ to what Stormy has because they are soft and skin flakes of if you pick at them.

I’m not sure what to do, but I made some changes in his cage today.  His cage is a huge cube condo but it’s just a big, one level square. He had his original cage bottom (the plastic bottom of a large living world cage) inside the cube to keep the mess down from hay and litter. He uses the litter box and eats in the plastic cage bottom which requires him to jump in and out of it frequently. He’s not the most elegant jumper and usually bumps the side with his back feet. I though this might be making or exasperating the sores on his feet. So today, despite the mess that will result, I took out the cage bottom. I just gave him a 3 sided bin to eat hay out of.

He has linoleum floor in his cage. I don’t know what to do to offer his feet more comfort as he can’t be trusted with any blankets, carpets, rugs, etc because he ate part of a stuffed toys some months ago and we almost lost him and he LOVES to dig and destroy things. I gave him a huge cardboard box filled with crumpled/ripped up newspaper so he could have something a bit soft.  I bought some carefresh in the hopes I could fill his sleeping area (a cardboard house) with it but he immediately started to snack on the stuff so that’s a big no. Any suggestions?

I also cut his nails as short as possible (which is hard, again he hates the feet touching). Tomorrow I’m going to get one of those pet nail rotary files so I can try to get them shorter. Anyone use those? They are on for $4.99 so it can’t hurt to try it.

Sorry for the long post but I need suggestions. I’m really hoping it’s not going to require a trip to the vet because my rabbit vet only opens her new clinic mid September and it’s a pretty rabbit specific problem. Also, cuz I’m poor

My mini rex has callouses on his heels that sometimes there will be a little layer of dead dried skin that comes off. His dont bleed or seem sore. I use Carefresh and my 3 will eat it too, my mini rex when I put fresh in the boxes will run to it and grab some pieces and start eating it, like a dog eating out of a food bowl. As long as it doesnt affect his diet is ok.

Fiver has callouses that get really red sometimes, but they don’t break and bleed. He has only soft beds to sit/lie on, I don’t put him on the hard floor.
But Mimzy has little callouses even on his toes that are obviously from the hard floor of his pen. They do not break or bleed either, but they look so terrible, I feel so bad for him. He WILL NOT let me put anything soft on his floor though, so I can’t do anything but maybe put cream on the callouses. (My vet has not told me to do this, however.)

My vet just gave me something called “Heal Rx” for Fiver’s heels. It’s a new thing apparently and it’s getting pretty rave reviews at my vet’s office. I haven’t put it on Fiver enough to really tell a difference so far, but it doesn’t look much different from neosporin to me, really.
Poor LPT! You and I are having some time with our loppies aren’t we? I would guess as long as he’s not bleeding or you can tell the heels aren’t infected, I’d just try to get him to spend time on something soft for his feet. But if he looks like he’s broken open those callouses, I think a trip to the vet is warranted.

Puffy-Try the stuff I use. Rupert is prone to those ‘callousy-pre-curser-to-sore-hocks” bumps because of his crooked leg (he has about three spots he gets them on) and Kahlua to because she’s an indignant stomper.

I’ve had them on the rubber (that’s on top of carpet) for three months now and they don’t have anything but fluffy bunny feet!!

Here’s a link to the thread where we are just talking about it https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aff/2/aft/106605/afv/topic/afnp/126978/Default.aspx

It’s cheap, it’s washable, it’s soft, it’s durable, they don’t chew it -AND I just thought of one more bonus-it’s muffling!!! You can’t hear them stomping around

I went to that thread, I would like to look into that rubber stuff. I never seen it before. What store did you get it at?
