Bindi ate Apple seeds!!!! Very worried!

My husband let Bindi out without watching him and he got into a garbage bag and ate half an apple core and I suspect seeds as well. I feel so horrible. I’m really worried. I know apple seeds are poisonous to rabbits. Will he be okay if he just ate a couple? I’m so mad at my husband right now.

Posted on your facebook already, push hay and water, thats hte best thing to help get it through his system.

From what I understand the arsenic is only present in very small quantites and it has a cumulative effect. I would up the hay and water in the hope of moving things through quickly and keep a close on him. If he only got one or two things should be OK. The greater concern would be on going consumption where the arsenic was progressively building up in his system to the point of reaching toxic levels. You could also put in a call to your vet and see if they can give you an idea of what to watch for that may indicate poisoning.

I really hope Bindi will be okay. I know if my buns ate apples seeds or anything on the toxic food list for bunnies I would freak out too.

Just checked and it’s cyanide that is present in the seeds, there can also be arsenic but only if it has been used in the soil or sprays. Once again the levels are extremely low and a great many appleseeds would need to be consumed.
From what I read on the posts those people whose buns managed to get into some apple seeds survived with no ill effect.

Bindi is fine. I stayed up most of the night keeping an eye on him. I made Ricky take his turn since it was HIS fault this happened.

Bindi is actually being a total brat right now digging at his floor. This is his temper tantrum when he thinks he should be out instead of Olivia.

I did lots of research last night and came to the same conclusion, Roberta. I believe it has to be a pretty big quantity of seeds or eaten regularly over a span of time. People tend to make a big deal out of stuff like this and then it’s scary because of all the hype.

I have a friend on Facebook who messaged me and said the bunnies on his ranch get apples, core, seeds and everything often and are perfectly fine. I messaged him back with the info I had on small traces of cyanide in the apples.

Better safe than sorry. Apple seeds are obviously not good for them, even in small amounts. Sort of like chocolate for dogs. You hear about how toxic chocolate is but I know of a dog who ate a whole chocolate cake and was fine (by accident, of course).

I have no proof he did eat any seeds but I suspect. I found half the core and a couple of seeds on the floor beside the garbage bag. They were very small seeds, though, as it was a small apple.

 

Will continue to keep a close eye on him today. Thanks again for all your concern.

The actual apple core (especially a few hrs old and slightly fermented) must be tastier than the plain flesh… All of mine like apple in small quantities but the one time I left an apple core in the waste box next to their pen (I’d eaten the apple a few hours before and tossed it in as everything was going in the compost heap) Pepper lined herself up on the coffee table and did a soaring leap into the waste box. After I recovered from the shock and unearthed her from the debris, there she was with the apple core in her mouth like it was the bunny equivalent to the holy grail.

lol, Roberta. I didn’t actually see Bindi eat the apple, I just saw the after mess.

Mimz- Well, Ricky felt pretty bad for making me worry and I think he was a little worried too. He’s not the worry type really, that’s my job. I did lecture him about checking the area for bunny hazards before letting the bunnies out. He doesn’t normally let them out. I guess Bindi guilted him with his big eyes.
