Hi Everyone,
Well, I think of all my strange and neurotic questions, this has to be the best (or worst depending on how you look at it). My lady bun, Nelli, is probably only 1- 1.5 lbs bigger than my male bun, BunBun- he’s about 4.5 and she’s about 5.5-6 lbs. But she’s just bigger built- she’s longer, taller and she’s a lop, so her paws are mammoth compared to BunBun’s dainty little dwarf paws. BunBun is the boss of the two usually- and Nellie seems happy with that. They have never fought and are very affectionate. However, I’ve noticed that once in a while, Nelli puts her big front paws on his back and kinda lays across him. I always pull her off him, although he never seems upset. I never thought it was too uncomfortable for BunBun, since he was laying down. But this time when she put her paws on his back and leaned on him, he tried to get up. Except Nelli was obviously too heavy for him so he was stuck with his front legs in standing position, his back was flattened to the floor and his hind legs splayed out behind him. It was in the pretty much the same position they get into when they strech after getting up. I got Nelli off of him and he hopped away, but it really made me nervous. Right afterward he was grinding his teeth louder than his usual tooth purring sound, and his eyes looked rather wide. I’m hoping it was just aggravation either at his wife for smushing him or me for abruptly ending their cuddling session. He seems fine now and is hopping normally, so I’m sure he’s OK.
But now I’m wondering… could Nelli actually hurt his back or hind legs by laying on him like that? She’s not that huge, but it was pretty clear that he was stuck. I know how delicate their bones are, but I’ve never heard of them breaking each others back by crushing each other. Is this just a harmless bunny activity, or should I worry about it?
