Hey everyone! Thumper is starting to get some nasty mats on him and i’ve been trying to hard to keep them off but they’re very hard to deal with. I have a lot of grooming supplies for him; however, now I think I need new scissors. The ones I have are too dull now and barely cut through mats. If anyone has any recommendations for scissors, I’d be very grateful! Rabbits have such delicate skin I wanna be as safe as I can, but also be able to get them out quickly because I know Thumper HATES being groomed. Thank you for any tips! If it helps, Thumper is an American Fuzzy Lop angora rabbit!

Don’t use scissors. It’s super easy to nick the skin by accident. Get a pair of these pocket pet trimmers. I got mine at Walmart for around $10. Can shave mats close to the skin without danger of injury.

If you’re taking them off, the trimmer would be the safest way to get completely under the mat. Likely down at skin level.
For other mats that are less severe, you could try some tools that help split or break up the mat so you can then comb the rest out. As long as they don’t pull too much as rabbit skin is delicate.

When my Bindi used to get bad mats, I would use the trimmer to trim off the bulk of the mat and then the rest was easier to brush out or pick out with your fingers. I made the mistake of using scissors once, and cut his skin. I felt so awful……

When I was working at a dog groomers, I trimmed a ‘mat’ off a Jack Russell’s leg…I sliced his skin by mistake Poor little thing yelped

                  Definitely opt for clippers.

The brand I posted is the one I used for my bunny and I also used it for my horse to trim her muzzle. I think it’s a good little trimmer for the price.

We just bought this for our Maine Coon. He had been getting a few bad mats and this thing works very well. You can adjust the blade to change how close to the skin it cuts, which turned out to be a big help.
