We’re switching to all expens for the rabbits we rescue, and since we’re in an apartment and I don’t want to risk damaging the floors, we need to put something underneath the pens so they can’t mess with the carpet, etc. I was thinking of using those foam mats, but aren’t those dangerous if the rabbit chews them?

What I’d like to know is what are safe and cheap methods that people have used to make a floor for expen cages? I’d prefer not to have to do too much construction or labor to make them, so something that snaps together easily and doesn’t take much assembly would be ideal. If it can also be compact when not in use, that would be great.

Vinyl mats for like, office chairs or just a cut of linoleum from the hardware store work great. Some rabbits do eat the foam, and liquids get underneath really easy so they aren’t ideal carpet protectors.

Thanks, I’ll check that out. I was going to put a tarp underneath the foam mats, but the linoleum should probably be cheaper, and the foam mats would be difficult to keep clean I’d imagine.

You can find some cheap 5×8 rugs at home depot too, linoleum, etc.

I use non-cushioned flooring vinyl. It is cheap and you could roll it up when not in use.

I actually use it upside down because the back is slightly textured and gives better traction for the rabbits.

A tip: if using vinyl or rubber backed mats, put down an old bedsheet first. Some of the materials can react with the carpet leaving a yellowed area.

For something more rigid, Ikea has the KOLON floor protector mats that are about 3×4 ft.
