› FORUM › HABITATS AND TOYS › Best ideas for bunny beds or cushions?
Time to go Christmas shopping for Panda and Fernando, huzzah! I’m thinking about what to get them, and one idea I have is getting them both (or maybe each of them if I can afford it) a nice cushion for them for when they lounge during their overnight times in the X-pen. I’ve been seeing them relaxing on the sisal rug a lot lately during the nighttime hours, and I’d love to get them as comfortable as possible. Of course, the cushion/bed should be made of bunny-safe material. Anyone got suggestions?
I’ve seen some instagram bunnies with beds. I was curious about those too. I think they’d love something like that. I used to have a cat bed for them when they were little and still kept together, but they would constantly pee on it.

That’s what I’m wary about too. P&F are very good about peeing in their litterbox, but this is something I’d have to keep an eye on. Maybe some material that’s nice and soft but not too soft?
It’s odd though, because they come on our bed frequently and lay or sit, but never pee on it. what if you gave them a cat or dog bed, but put a hay mat underneath or a towel?

In fact I’m seriously thinking about hay mats too. If I got them one big enough for the both of them to snuggle comfortably, and put a hay mat in there…yep, could work.
My boys love hay mats. They each have one in their cage, and there’s one in the room. It’s great cause they’ll lay on them, dig them, chew them. We’ve had a hay mat for each of them since day 1. In the past few months I’ve noticed the mats have helped them stop all the destructive tendencies. Every 4-5 weeks they’ll attempt a baseboard chew or a blanket dig, but they tend to stick with the mat.
What material do you recommend for the bed/cushion itself?
Maybe something like this? https://www.target.com/p/high-walled-lattice-print-pet-bed-brown-linen-small-boots-barkley-153/-/A-52277349#lnk=sametab the high walls will give them something to rest their heads on and the mat can slip nicely and the bottom.

Looks nice, I’ll have to check Amazon to see if they have it (if not, there’s a Target in my town). However, I see it’s made of polyester, is that safe for rabbits to potentially chew?
Mine don’t chew soft surfaces like that, so I never thought about that. I’m sure you could find a bunny safe one though.

I’ve seen that many rabbit owners like to use memory foam mats for their buns to lounge on, I’m not sure how big of chewers P & F are, but often these memory foam mats are thinner, and I don’t think the fabric would be too enticing to chew, but then again my boys are not big chewers so it really varies. From what I’ve seen some have gotten memory foam mats and then wrapped some thin fleece material around it or covered it with that, and fleece from what I’ve heard is fine if a little bit is ingested from time to time. (don’t quote me on that, it’s just what I’ve learned from other rabbit owners) so, that all being said, maybe you could try one for them, leave it in during the day at first or sometime where you can watch them with it to make sure they don’t chew to the point of concern, and that way you can sort of judge if it would be a good idea. I do know that getting them at pet stores is quite pricey, and they’re usually quite big there, (like for dogs) so maybe it’s best to look online first, I don’t have any specific links right now i apologize, but I’m sure that it wouldn’t be hard to find one and read some reviews to see if any other pet-owners have used them! Just another quick idea, I often just use pieces of fleece folded up, or lately I’ve sewn two pieces together to make a little mat/place to lounge on, and that way you can wash it, and it also may be better for those on a budget too, because many fabric stores often sell “remnants” or scraps of material for way cheaper, in fact I just got some from a jo-ann’s store the other day, and I got each around 1 -yard piece for 80% off. hopefully these ideas help you!!
Update: I’m still searching, but I’m now considering a combo of one or two of these woven-grass beds/mats/tents and a fleece blanket or two. Where would I be likely to find good-quality fleece blankets of a suitable size for bunnies?
I bought large dog fleece blankets from Amazon. Big enough for them to dig at/bunch up.
I’ve got a big fleece blanket that’s folded up inside a cotton pillowcase for Nimbus. I put it in the cotton cos I was worried about his hocks, but actually it’s also made it much neater and easier to keep tidy and he loves sitting and lounging on it. Then you can just take the fleece blanket out and chuck both bits in the washing machine.
I wish I knew! Everything I’ve tried for Bertha she either pees on, chews on, or both! The only thing she can handle is polar fleece, stretched tight over the flooring so it’s not so tempting, and even that gets nibbled occasionally.
Bunston used to love his cuddle-e cup. He would chew it, but not eat it, and would sleep it in when it was cold. It had stuffing vs. foam in it, so not quite as dangerous if a bit was ingested. It still made me nervous though….

Mine would toilet on or chew hay mats too, Dana. What works for some buns doesn’t for others!
I really like the beds/cushions with the bumper border that BB has in her store. They look like you could easily vaccum them or throw in the washing machine if needed. I know TimTim would take to something like that bed. He is favouring fleece at the moment but it is riddled with holes. The fleece blankets I pic up are only $5 so I toss them out when they are beyond saving.
@joe, you could pick up fleece at a fabric store like Jo-Ann’s. The thing with fleece is it doesn’t fray at edges and doesnt need to be hemmed. So anything from the off-cut bins or a specific length off the roll is suitable.

The closest Jo-Ann stores in my region are at least half an hour’s drive away, but there are a couple of fabric stores in Manassas and I think Michael’s (an arts and crafts store chain) carries them, as do Target and Walmart. Just to clarify, should I be looking for natural fleece or will polyester anti-pill fleece do?
