Benjamin’s story
I bought Benjamin on March 17 2017… I had previously bought Beyoncé, my other bunny from Craigslist for a whopping $5, I had done TONS of research and knew I would have to eventually get her spayed and get her a bunny friend. I also found Benjamin on Craigslist, he was about 3 hours away and after lots and lots of persuading I convinced my mom to take the drive with me to go get him. When I had initially emailed his previous owners about him they specifically said, “He has been peeing on himself and his genital area is swollen, when we took him to the vet we got antibiotics for him” of course I was skeptical of buying a sick bunny considering how expensive they are as is so I ask “Could he possibly have wet tail?” They then took him to the vet again to ask that very question, the vet said the same thing as before and gave him stronger antibiotics. I knew then they really cared and they were not trying to scam me. I fell in love with him the first time I saw his ad, one ear was up the other down, he also had the fluffiest cheek fluff. I knew I needed him. After a 3 hour drive and back Benjamin was in my home running around. I figured that if I got him fixed he would stop peeing on himself and the swelling would go away, that was not the case. He got progressively worse and started to get sore hocks. When we went to the vet to ask about the problem they told us “We don’t know what is wrong with him” and gave us antibiotics that were made for cats and a container with a lotion like paste to put on his hocks. That didn’t change a thing. That’s when I found this site, binky bunny after researching whatever I could to see what was wrong with him. No one else knew what was wrong with him and told me to go to a different vet, I did. After two visits they finally said “ He does not have a working sphincter” having no clue what a sphincter was I went to google, I then found out a sphincter was a kind of “trapdoor” per say that opens and closes when something or someone wants to pee, unlike Benjamins a bunnies open and closes when they want it to, Benjamin’s was basically always open and he had no control over it. I knew then he was going to have this ever going problem. The first month I found out I went to all the worse possible ending “putting him down, giving him to the vet, giving him to the humane society” none of them benefits Benjamin. After crying I came to the conclusion I would have to give him 24/7 care and butt washes (which he hates by the way). About a month later he became depressed I guess you could say and never hopped or binkied around. It was heartbreaking to see but I eventually moved him into my room (even though he stinks) and he and Beyoncé are the happiest I’ve ever seen them. Although I probably did not need to write out his ENTIRE story I like to write, I also wrote this to educate anyone who may have the same problem because what Benjamin seems to have is very very rare and incurable. If your bunny had similar symptoms ( constant wet butt, not using the litter box, always peeing, sore genitals) please go the vet and get them tested because if it’s not caught right away it can be life-threatening. ( the vet simply found out by gently applying pressure to the area by his genitals). Also, I feel like I have posted so many things and it’s all really confusing so it’s nice to have an official post explaining Benjamin
