› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Bella….boy or girl?
I didn’t take Bella to the Vet this morning with Baxter to check “her” gender because I wanted to focus more on Baxter and I had my 3 little ones with me. Anyway, I just checked her again……the testicles are descended. She is definetly a he. It’s wierd. Bella just looks like a girl to me. She is supposed to be a she! The thing is, my daughter doesn’t want her to be a him at all and I got Bella for my daughter. She has been so good in helping with her…giving her some hay, petting her and she likes to buy her toys. My daughter is only 4 (5 next week) and she would be upset if she knew Bella is a Billy lol. Should I keep the name Bella? It sounds so girly to me but I am considering just letting my daughter continue thinking he is a she. What would you do?
You can keep his name. This happens so frequently, that some people keep it, some people make a slight variation to make the name more appropriate. The truth is, he is a boy. I don’t believe in lying to children in order to somehow keep from “hurting their feelings”. It doesn’t make sense to me. He is what he is. You just figured it out today, so I’m sure you can figure out a straightforward way to explain to her that you made a simple mistake and Bella is a boy.
‘Bello’ is the male version of ‘Bella.’ Maybe that would work? Or something like Beau? I think being honest with your daughter would be best, I agree with Beka.
Uh oh, two boys?
I hear two boys are easier to bond..
Not sure.
Well, if you know that you girl will be upset to find out that her bunny is a boy, then I guess there is no reason to tell her. She won’t ever find out until the day you tell her. But I don’t have kids, so I know nothing about children psychology!
There is someone else in here who decided to keep the boy’s name although they found out that their bunny was a girl. I don’t remember who though. We changed Karla to Karl, although my boyfriend was initially very upset and refused for the first few days. I did find it hard as well at first to come to terms with my little sweet girl being a (naughty) boy. But we always say now, that Karl could only be a boy and that is the only right sex for him.
I like the combination of two boys! Where I’m from, the common assumption is that female-female is the easiest combination, but besides the obvious point of having a boy-girl, I actually prefer boy-boy. So good for you
Congrats on the little man!
Hehe You can call him Edaward now!! OK thats just the Twilight nerd in me coming out!! Since he’s still so young I think it’s ok to change the name.
we thought my bunny was a boy at first, and “she” was named mocha ( i thought that was a cute little girls name) but when i found out he was a he i just kept the name, but bella seems pretty girly to me. i don’t know your choice. i would not lie to your daughter, coming from a kid i would be upset if i found my mother didn’t tell the truth. One of my friends mom never told there daughter they took there dog to be put down she just said it went to another home and she found out when she was 16 and she almost started crying. but its up to you.
Welcome to the bouncing gender gene club!
My Pringles went from she to he to she to he and finally back to a she when taken in for ‘his’ neuter. And these were all vets giving me different answers.
Which worked out well, because Daisy turned out to be a boy.
I also have a bad tempered male cat named Katie, but that’s another story…..which the vet says is the reason he’s so bad tempered.
im still not sure about twix’s gender ;P lmao! if that helps
twix could be a girl or a boy name though, couldn’t it?
I agree, don’t lie to your little girl. She may not like that Bella is a boy, but it’s better than lying to her. Truth is always the best ![]()
Yeah welcome to the bouncing bunny gender club. My little Tansy went from girl to boy. I still catch myself calling him ‘she’ every once in a while.
I would tell your daughter, because she’ll find out eventually. I know when my parents didn’t tell me something about my pets, and then I found out years later, I was upset with them. Honesty is the best policy!
I don’t lie to my kids but if she would be upset about something like that I wouldn’t say anything until she asked me. That isn’t lying. There is no harm letting her call Bella a girl if it makes her happy. By me not correcting her, that doesn’t mean I am lying to her and she will resent me for that lol. If she asked me and I said Bella was a girl, that would be lying. Anyway, she asked me lol. I told her that Bella is in fact a boy and she didn’t care at all. It’s so funny how one day when I say that I think Bella may be a boy she gets extremely upset and then a week later she doesn’t care….kids! lol She is over it and now we can move on from that.
are you still calling her ( oops) i mean him Bella? you could name him bello like minty said.
So far yes I am. Bella comes to that name. My girls will be confused if we call him something else. I think I will too. lol I am too used to calling him Bella. Although he is often called Bell, Bell Bell or Bells. He will come to any of those. I would like a name that we can call him Bell or Bells for short. I thought about Bellini but I don’t know lol
You could just name him Bell ![]()

Aww! Well it probably worked out for the best this way. You mentioning the possibility earlier on prob gave her time to become accustomed to it if turned out Bella was a he. Which it did! She might initiate the name change herself yet. Just to be silly, I want to put forward Bellboy or Bellhop as possibilities. hehe ;o)
Isn’t Belleau a name or am I imagining this? Lol…
Sounds like Bello, but looks “prettier” without the “o” at the end.
Bellboy! That is cute lol. My daughter told me last that she wanted to change the name. My 2 year olds know it though. I could probably teach then a different name though.
Belleau is cute too.
I chose Bellboy. It fits. Now I look at him and his perfect Dutch markings remind me of a uniform for some reason. lol I don’t know why. Like the white is a shirt and the tan are his pants. lol Wierd but I can see it every time I look at him.
i like his name!
