I’m worried my bun might be in the beginning of stasis- She ate her pellets as I was going to bed last night but she didn’t come to wake me up this morning (her usual routine) and she’s not eating any of her morning veggies which is very not like her. I already called a vet and am taking her in at 10:30 AM CT but I’m nervous because I haven’t gone to this vet before since I’m still relatively new to town. Is there anything I should be expecting the vet to do/say for stasis??? My mind is a total blank right now because I’m just in a panic!

Also, I just moved to Lawrence, KS… does anyone know any good rabbit vets in the area?

        Thanks

Comments: i took my 5 plus year old Holland Lop to a ‘new’ vet for a second opinion. i knew something was wrong with the Timothy boy, but his other doctor could not find anything. the ‘new’ vet looked at his molars. the were all malaligned and in very bad shape. Timothy ended up having a dental, including 4 extractions and is doing great….i am impressed!

I found this vet on the Petbunny list.

The other vet is in Wichita which is too far I think for you. I do have a rabbit friend in Wichita and I could ask her if she knows anyone in your area but I don’t think I would get a quick enough response for you today but I will ask anyway.

They should check her stomach – palpate it. Also have them check her teeth perhaps she’s having dental problems as well. Basically if this vet has never seen your rabbit before they are going to have to check everything. If they suspect it is a gut problem then they should x-ray her.

Does she seem to be in any pain?

Thanks Sarita! Topeka is definately doable- I’ll try the one I have an appt for in Lawrence first and then use them as a back-up.

She definately seems uncomfortable- sitting hunched over in the corner- but no tooth grinding yet so I’m hoping she’s not in too much pain. Also when I pick her up (which she hates) she gets mad and flicks her feet at me so she’s still fiesty. I did get her to eat a papya tablet, but she turned down all the greens I tried to entice her with…

Do let us know what the vet says. She does sound like she is uncomfortable.

If they suspect it is stasis then I would imagine they should do fluids, some gut motility drugs and pain medications. But at this point you don’t really know what could be wrong with her.

She just hopped up and started nibbling on some lettuce and drinking some water!!!! It was like in a space of just a few seconds she went from lethargic and hunched up to hopping around, playing, and eating!!! I think I might still take her to the vet to double check since I’m also pretty sure she hasn’t been pooping for the past 12 hrs… but it’s really weird how normal she just started acting all of a sudden!

I think that would be a good idea. Sometimes this happens with my rabbits too – I can’t explain it either, I think maybe it’s the weather, the time of year, who knows.

She seems to be back to her normal bunny self!! The vet said she might have been having some gas or tummy cramps that passed on its own and to just keep an eye on her… she’s eating and pooping normal again though, and has been hopping all over the place like normal! I can’t believe she gave me such a scare and then turned around again so fast!

Thanks for the info on the vets Sarita

Geez that is always so scarry!

If you get a chance, go to a drug store and pick up some liquid Ovol and needless syringes (from the pharmacist) – it’s main ingredient is simethicone which is used to treat gas – you can find it in the baby section. Use it for those times you think your bunny might have gas – it’s great to have on hand because usually one or two doses can clear it up in the same amount of time it takes to wait for a vet appointment. But of course, never use it as a substitute for a vet visit – just as a precaution while you’re waiting. And even if it turns out to not be gas, Ovol is completely safe and will do no harm.

                          Kisses to your bunny!

That can definitely be scary when they aren’t acting like themselves. Usually my bunnies RUN for their pellets in the morning, but now, sometimes they just look at them like “I get those evey day, how boring” – I can never tell why some days the pellets are exciting and some days they aren’t…. Now, I do know if something is wrong when they don’t want their papaya tablet!

Rabbitsmba- thanks, I’m definately going to be picking up some Ovol now to have on hand! I knew there was some baby simethicone stuff you could use but I couldn’t remember the name

Ember (the one who was acting off this morning- the pic in my avatar) is usually the “pig” out of my two and I’m normally worried that she’s going to eat all the morning veggies before poor little Teddy (lionhead boy) gets to have any! She was funny with the papya tablet this morning… she wouldn’t come running and begging for it like normal, but if I held it right in front of her face she would take it and nibble it. Kinda reminded me of when I was a kid and my mom would bake cookies when I was sick and I would be “oh fine, if I must eat the cookie you placed right in front of me I will…” (I think she used to use cookies the way we use papya tablets- to see if me and my brother were sick!)

And Ember is still hopping around munching hay and now her evening pellets so hopefully she’s done scaring me to death!
