I was watching Fiver binky around on the bed today, and noticed his rear right heel seemed a little pink. Sure enough he’s got a small area rubbed down to skin there.

I am bummed, because I’ve tried to make his resting places as soft as possible for him, knowing he’s more prone to sore hock than other bunnies. I would think that the straw mats from Binky would be more comfortable than just the plastic floor of his pen. And it’s only the one heel so far, which is odd.

I use Carefresh bedding, but he just pushes that out of the way.

I got him a Cuddle Cup, but he tries to eat it.

What else can I do? I don’t want his little feets to hurt!

Is he a stomper? He’s the rex right?

Kahlua had pink heels, doesn’t hurt to put some preperation H on them, my vet looked at them and wasn’t worried. I actually just checked them today during anal gland cleaning (friday night when you get old) and they look better! Mine have never lived on wire floors, and their condo has padding on the floors so I have no idea why she got pink heels, but apparently nothing to worry about, and some are more prone then others..

Anyways point is, pink is nothing to worry about. Only if the skin is broken should you worry. BUT you can put some prep H on to lessen the swelling and help them heal

Prep H? 0_0 Hogeeze, can he lick that stuff off without it hurting him? That just sounds weird! lolz….But if you say so.
Ugh, gland cleaning. I tried to tell my vet about it last time I was there, she just flat out ignored me. I was hoping she’d clean his for me, since he’s not used to my handling yet. I was lucky the nurse could get his toenails clipped.
Yes, he’s the mini-rex. You know, he was blowing his coat when I got him…could it be just shedding to the point of baldness there? I didn’t think of that.

No broken skin or bleeding…yet. And I won’t let it go that far either if I can help it.

he may always have a touch of pink. Mead has always had a little bit on her heels. and she’s always on softer surfaces. short of carrying her everywhere, i’m not sure what else to do. just be aware, keep an eye out and if they look like they’re getting worse, talk to the vet.

oh yeah.  and nail trims.  very, very often.  rexes have longer quicks, so it’s best to trim a small bit every single month, then to let it go longer.

I just had the nurse at the vet trim him up as close to the quick as we could the other day. He’s still skittish about being held, so I didn’t want to have to fight him right off the bat.
At least I can SEE his quicks…Pip and Mim both have dark nails, so I need a flashlight and a magnifying glass.

I’ll keep an eye on it. Wish I COULD carry him everywhere, the little scamp! ^_^

Yup preperation H is totally safe and good to use on the hocks. No worries at all, except you know, buying it. Had to go in myself, Dave wouldn’t be seen with me buying that LOL

Hogeeze! *laughs* Just like having to ask them to buy ‘feminine products’ because you’re out and can’t leave the house? xD

I would think Prep H would be nothing compared with that. ^_^

                    Thanks for the tip, K&K.

He was doing circles on my bed at warp speed today, so I can guess it’s not hurting him. It’s still pink, no sign of torn flesh or anything. He doesnt’ even flinch when I touch it.
I do wish it would go away though…it just strikes me as odd and it’s something I keep noticing. Distracting really.

Jessica had this problem as well.  I was totally freaked out that it was the start of sore hocks.  I rushed her into the vet.  It was similar as you described:  missing hair, kind of callused like.  My vet recommended Silvedine cream (I believe you can get this at a drug store) and grandular drops (something like that)  The silvedine was to soothe and keep infection free, the grandular was to make sure it didn’t open up and/or expand.  I had to use the grand stuff when my cat was unable to heal after accidently ripping out 2 of his kitty claws.  It was supposed to keep the tissue binding.  He suggested that I just continue to keep an eye on it.  In about a week it wasn’t even there.

Hope that helps.  PS I couldn’t figure out how she got it either.  I believe I posted on here for suggestions where the sore hock came from.  DH thinks that its b/c she jumps from outside to inside the cage and she often lands w/ the rear of her hind paw on the lip of the cage.  This is really the only culprit we could find.
