I know there is a link about litter somewhere as this has come up numerous times.  I use wood stove pellets. $7.99 for 40lbs. It lasts at least a month or more and I dump it completely daily.  I only use a thin layer and top with hay.  Love this stuff as there is NO smell – just a slight woodsy smell which is clean smelling.

ugh. i am going thru a 40lb bag of pressed paper pellets a month. this is cleaning two litterboxes every other or every two days, and one additional litterbox once a week. the bag costs 25 bucks. i like it, but it’s getting pricey. i am going to try and see if i can start doing the wood stove pellets. there is a tractor supply store a half-hour away from me.

actually, i’m glad you asked this b/c i wanted to ask a question…

the tractor store has EQUINE FRESH. is this safe? is it like the wood stove pellets (that i cannot find anywhere seeing as it’s summer.) they sell the 40lb bags for 6 bucks and change. i’m seriously considering going and buying like 5 bags…

When I got my first bun, I used Feline Pine. But that began to become way too expensive because a 7 lb. bag was costing me almost $4! Plus, I was giong through it like no other, so I had to find an alternative. That’s when I turned to wood stove pellets…I live in a farming community so I can find them in tons of places. I bought a 40 lb. bag for $4.75 (you can’t beat that). Now, mine says that it’s not for human or animal consumption, but that it is environmentally safe. Therefore, I concluded that it pretty much just meant that you shouldn’t give it to your animal as food pellets. I also asked the clerk and read the package to see if there were additives, and there were none. So, Beka27, I think that you’d be just fine as long as there are no additives, but you can always ask the clerk (explain what you are using it for). If it’s a farming/tractor supply store, they should be knowledgable about that sort of stuff.

EDIT: I just realized  that I didn’t note how long it lasted me. I’m still on my first bag that I bought a few weeks ago, and I change my litter every-other day. So, it is lasting me about a month or more I’d say.

Beka – have you googled “wood stove pellets” in your area? They should be available year round.  There’s a place in North Royalton, Ohio called Country Stove & Patio 440-582-0062.  I would call them and see if they carry them.  if not, they should know where to buy them as they sell wood stoves.  Our big lumber stores carry them here as well as places that sell wood stoves.  Have no clue what Equine Fresh is.

that would be much closer! only about 5-10 minutes from me! *dials*

no luck.  they don’t have them and they said they have accelerant on them when they do.

but thank you anyways.  i did call another place about 20 minutes from me last week and got the same response, as well as Home Depot and Lowes…

I use newspaper, then a layer of yesterdays news then a layer of hay because Charlie actually rolls in his litter tray so I want as much absorption as possible!

I poked around a little, and there is remarkable little information about what is in Equine Fresh on their web site.  I use a similar product for my guys called Barn Dry.  The thing to find out is if the product is 100% saw dust, with no bug killers or odor reducers in it.

i use carefresh, its a bit expensive, i pay 5 bucks for a 14 liter bag, but it lasts about a month, and i change his litter tray every other day and its dust free and natural. its only necessary to clean that much because i put about 2 inches deep and it absorbs ALOT! lol and he usually ends up spreading his hay all over his litter box too, so that prolly absorbs a bit. potty training is basically concluded, he does really well just peeing the the potty now, i just bought a hay rack, going to modify it so he can get the hay out easier and try to slowly start “weaning” him to the hay rack lol!
