Bedding Reccomandations

Hi all!

So, the bunnies seem to keep ruining things near their cage. They have chewed up all the base moldings, and an expensive pillow. 

My parents have been very cool to cope with all this, and they are telling me that I need to buy a more secure cage for them. I was looking for the biggest one I could find on amazon, and I found a Pawhut hutch (it looks pretty big, one person had 3 rabbits in it. The bunnies would still live inside, though it’s an outdoor hutch.) I’m against storebaught cages, but my parents are generous enough to let me have them in the house,  and they want a storebaught cage, so yeah. (There x-pen would also be attached to it most of the day, and they would still get all their freerange time, indoors and harness-“walks” outdoors)

I also want to switch their bedding from towels and fleeces to something more natural feeling like straw. Is it okay to use those decoration bales of straw as rabbit bedding? Like some of them say “porch bales”. I can’t seem to find any inexpensive straw products on amazon. 

Also, do you reccomend any other bedding (for all around the cage) that isn’t too expensive and I can buy in a large quantity? My rabbits are very good about only going in their litterbox. I tried carefresh as litter once, but they were addicted to eating it.

Can we have a link to the cage? What are they in currently?
I don’t think I would use decorative straw as it is probably treated with odd chemicals. If you want to use straw, you can usually pick it up at a feed/livestock store. I have heard that straw is very dusty, however. Hay mats like JR suggested would be great, albeit a bit more expensive.

I already ordered it a few days ago. They currently live in a doggie pen. The room they are in is sort of “loungish”. We have a tv in there, a printer, and lots of cords. My mom’s a designer, and before we got the bunnies, she filled the room up with lots of expensive things she got on discount, that the bunnies have access to.

The x-pen would be a bit smaller when I attach it to the hutch, but they would still have a section of space for them to hop around in and stretch their legs.

I also bought some linoleum, to attach to some plywood (their is no base on the bottom of the hutch). I think the linoleum would be quite slippery for them, so I’ll probabbly now use the hay mats y’all reccomended, and in the little hidey house attached, I’ll fill it with lots of hay/straw for them to sleep in.

Hmm, im kind of striking Amazon Bunny cages right now. Only because I bought a nice big one for both my two females and it was wood. Buns love wood. Your going to have to expect chewing and lots of it!!
Also these cages are a PAIN to build and a PAIN to keep clean!
I would keep in mind no wood is safe from bored buns

Update: My dad and I built the hutch over the weekend. Man, it was a pain. The instructions were pretty confusing,and we sort of had to put the second floor in our own way.

They’ve chewed the ramp a little, but not much. I’m working on making a pathway from the hutch, leading outdoors (there hutch is in a room with a big glass sliding door), into a big brick patio blocked off by an x-pen. I put them on the patio, and they really loved the fresh air and sunshine outside.

On the floor, we experimented with hay, but they confused it with a litter box. I think i’ll buy some hay mats soon.
