Hello everyone, I am getting a rabbit soon and I was wondering what bedding I should put in my cage before the rabbit is litter trained. I don’t want the pee to soak through the mat I have into the carpets. I can’t use the loose paper/wood bedding because my cage is way to big for that. Thanks!

          Welcome Zinnia1027

I dont actually recommend any bedding as it can hinder the “litter training” process. Rabbits tend to naturally toilet in one area so it’s just a matter of setting things up to provide a place where they will naturally want to go. A good size litterbox with absorbant litter and hay on top or in rack above the box and you should be seeing them mostly toilet there. Having bedding in rest of cage that is similar to litter will usually have them using that like a toilet also. Some young rabbits are attracted to peeing on anything absorbent also, like towels and blankets. But these are easy to switch out and wash.

Im not really clear on your cage set up. The mats and carpet are underneath typical type cage with solid plastic base?

I have a cage with no bottom because I built it with those storage grids. I have like a painting tarp thing on the bottom. If they are attracted to peeing on absorbent things should I just get like plastic or tile to put on the floor so it doesn’t go through when she is just beginning to be litter trained?

I’ve used vinyl remnants or bought 2-3m lengths off the roll and used them under pens. Perhaps something like that would help. Easy to sweep also. Just try find one with a bit of texture so there is some traction. Not all rabbits like walking on lino or vinyl.
You can by non slip gym mats too that are designed to go under gym equipment. More expensive but should last well provide the edges are not accesible to bunny teeth!

My bunny isn’t fully litter trained, and I have her on some vinyl tiles with fleece or memory foam on top of it
