We just adopted another rabbit as Gemy our family member of 10 years had passed away 6 months ago.

It was very hard on us but we are now ready to adopt again and we did.

Gemmy had some toys but wasn’t much of a toy playing bunny.

Skippy is a mini  about a year old and we have had him for a few days and picked up some toys for him.

He is doing great with us.(binkys and running around, eating well, exploring with one of us right behind him and he will be seeing our rabbit vet within a few days to start his wellness check ups every 6 months)

What just now happened was “SHOCK” and we were able to go into action immediately!

He picked up one one of the small plastic ball toys (that had some small openings) and he could not open his mouth to let it go.

The small openings in the ball got stuck into his upper and lower front teeth.

My wife immediately picked him up and I was able to get his small mouth open enough to “Un-latch” the plastic ball toy.

All plastic toys are now thrown out.

Plus I should have also realized that plastic can be broken off and could also have lodged in his mouth…..

Please don’t have this happen to you.

The only play toys he will get in the future are going to be those willow baskets. (no plastic)

PLEASE be aware if you have a small mini or maybe even a larger one that they can get their teeth “STUCK” in the holes of these plastic toys and the plastic could also break off.

I should have been more careful/thoughtful about the kinds of toys a rabbit will be safe with.

Fortunately for us Skippy is fine and has forgotten all about his close call.

I never would have thought this could ever happen but it did and I want to alert my rabbit community who may have these kind of toys around that this could and did happen.

Hard plastic toys such as baby keys or stacking cups are generally considered safe. But I would recommend avoiding things with small holes, like a “wiffle ball” type toy. I could see an accident like this happening if the holes are small enough for their incisors to get stuck in. You were smart to get rid of the toy. You don’t want something like that to happen when you’re not around to watch him.

I’m glad your bunny is okay now. I was always concerned about using those little plastic cat toys with bells in them (the ones with openings). They just didn’t look safe to me, even though I saw others giving them to bunnies. Thank you for the warning!!

Hmm this is scary!  I use a pellet dispenser ball (picture below) but it also has little holes for the pellets to come out 🙁  I’m glad Skippy was okay!
