Hi Jennifer! I had a quick question about the BinkyBunny.com hay bales…

I know I should be watching everything that goes into my bunnies’ mouths, but this one slipped by me and I was worried it might slip past other members too if they’re not watching for it:

On the little red strings used to tie the bales together, there is a little tag that usually notes what kind of hay it’s attached to. On that tag, I found a staple. It doesn’t appear to be holding the tag to the string, although it’s completely closed, no sharp edges poking, but I found one of these tags in Pip’s pen one day after I’d put some hay in there for her to chew on. (It was probably one of her midnight snacks, so I didn’t have the light on.)

It kind of scared me, because the tag was half chewed when I found it while cleaning Pip’s cage and I thought, “Oh gosh, what if there was another staple on the chewed side?!” I opened another bale today and saw there was another tag like the first one, but it only had the one staple in it.

Needless to say, I’ll be careful to watch out for these in future, but I thought maybe it would be a good idea to bring it to discussion. The tag must’ve gotten caught in the bale of hay I gave to the bun, so it was a total accident, but I wondered why the tags had staples in them in the first place? I would be totally scared if I found either of my bunnies had swallowed these. (I also make sure they don’t get any of the string, since I would guess it’s not safe for them to chew on either.)

In the meantime, I still have to say, Binky hay is the best! My buns won’t even look at store bought anymore! ^_^

Scary about the staple. I can’t recall if the tags were stapled or not. I never noticed that. I put the bundles in a plastic box and open one at time by pulling the string off. I got interrupted and Shadow jumped in. When he heard me coming he jumped back out with the string around his neck. Fortunately the bin is low and the string long enough for his feet to hit the floor. He tried to keep running but he could not get anywhere. So now I do all that when he is not around.

But I agree, BB hay is the only one I will buy, I won’t even look at the store stuff either. I can’t wait for the willow bundles, any word on when the willow bundles will be in.

That’s weird.  I buy a lot of hay from BB and have never seen a staple.  Thanks for the heads up though.

I don’t recall a staple either, I’ll e-mail BB to make sure she pays this discussion a visit. Maybe there is a way to have it done without staples at all. In fact I am not even sure that BB is aware of this.  So, thanks for the heads up!

They actually come with a stapled tag from the baler, and I personally remove the staple, so mimzmum, so sorry, it must have been an oversight! Sometimes my husband helps, and he might have forgotten to do it. (easy to blame him) Anyway, we’ll be extra extra careful from now onto make sure to remove the staples!!

(note: Usually the tags have a little tear or cut in them where I have cut out or pulled out the stable, so it would be normal to see a tag that looked chewed up where the staple was)

Thanks for giving us a heads up!

No problem. I wasn’t even sure I should bring it up in forum, but I wanted to be sure everybun was safe.
I will be sure to check the rest of my bales more carefully from this last batch.

The staples should just be how the tags were stapled together from the baler. We do try to take those out, just because I personally don’t like the idea of the tags stapled together so that if a customer pulls it apart it doesn’t fall out, but Bunzai, can you tell me was the label just left stapled together or was their a loose staple in the hay?!

The last 5 or 6 bales we’ve opened had staples, too :o(

The tags aren’t folded either.  We couldn’t figure out why it was on the tag because it wasn’t attached to the binding……..so why the staple ?  Doesn’t make any sense *shrugs*

Now that’s just strange. I tear off the staples -which tears off part of the tag – then I make a clean cut and just fold the rest of the tag onto the binding…but it’s supposed to be without the staple still attached the tag – So why in the heck would the staple still be stuck the to tag? Well, that is confusing to me too. I will have to take a look and find out what is going on! Maybe when I was showing my hubby how to do it, he was just sort of listening and thought I was just cutting the tags and didn’t understand why but did it anyway. Now I really CAN blame my hubby because I know I do not keep the staples in the tags when I am doing it. Thanks for giving me more details, that was actually helpful in figuring out this whole staple in the tag mystery.

I’ll talk to the supplier to ask them to just not staple the tags, but my guess is they need to secure them so that when the bales are being shoved around, stacked, that the staple helps keep in in place.    So I may just have to have a “retraining” here in the staple removal process.

Binky, it was loose, tucked in the string. To be honest If I remember correctly at first glance there was no staple cause all you saw was the holes but the staple was on the back half it was there and looked untouched. As this was opened before BB went down for repairs I am a little hazy about the details.

I have a few more unopened bales and will check tonight and let you know. You should get hubby his very own staple remover, LOL.
