the vets where i live should not be allowed to ever work a day as vets. last time i went to the one vet that claimed to know something about rabbits, he gave me tylosine for snuffles. thank god i looked into it first. he didnt even want to tell me the name of the medication until i insisted. anyway, has anyone on here ever treated rabbits for snuffles, how long did your vet tell you to give them the medication for? i am currently on day 12, 2 doses per day 10 mg/kg of baytril oral 2.5% each. how many days is the treatment supposed to go on for? any help or advice would be very much appreciated. thank you in advance.

Baytril is a rabbit safe antibiotic and is often the “go to” antibiotic for treating infection. Best to have a culture and sensitivity test done to determine the best antibiotic to treat the specific bacteria if baytril isn’t taking care of it.

Baytril is often first choice for snuffles. How long the treatment should go on can vary greatly. Some vets prescribe antibiotics for one week, but it’s also common with a lot longer courses, 2-3 weeks. Snuffles can be very stubborn. Sometimes you need to do repeat treatment.

Tylosin can be used in rabbits. However, it would typically not be the first choice since there is a higher risk of an adverse reaction. The go-to broad spectrum antibiotic for rabbits is Baytril (Enrofloxacin). As Bam said, treatment periods can vary depending on how stubborn the infection is. If treating with Baytril is unsuccessful, then the vet may try a different antibiotic or even do a culture. They typically don’t do a culture unless traditional treatment isn’t working and they need to find an antibiotic that the bacteria is sensitive to. Cultures aren’t very reliable though since everything that is present will grow and not everything is the source of the symptoms.

Agreed with all the above. Baytril course can be dependent on a lot, but i would say if you see no difference or things get worse after 2 weeks, discuss changing to a different medication. Snuffles can be tough because different bacteria can cause it to my understanding. We tried three different treatments before getting it right for Wick.
