Barney’s Diet

Barney is feeling a bit  less sorry for himself today (i think) i have got him 2 proper brushes and got to work for a while cutting out some more of the matts that were irritating him, and brushing through the rest. I am ringing the vets later to have a chat with the advisor and see what she thinks I have bought him some fibafirst to go along with his hay to encourage him a bit more, and he has eaten a bit of that I also got some Supreme nuggets of rabbit food – have ordered some Excel to my parent’s house that i will pick up when i’m next home in 2 or 3 weeks. Is there anything else i could be doing for him diet wise? I put him on my scales and he didnt even register, i know i need to go slowly with him but does anyone have any tips or ideas for me that could help him? When i let him out of his cage, he seems so scared to run around, i dont think he was let out often in his old home! x

It probably wasn’t something you would want to feed him now anyway.

I think just doing what you are doing is the best – that may be the proper weight for him too if he’s a Lionhead – my Netherland is between 1.5 and 2 pounds too and he’s not a big eater anyway.

I agree, he seems very unsure of his kibble so i’m going to assume they had him on some sort of multicoloured cereal rubbish. The average weight for them when fully grown is supposed to be 3 pounds, but i’m not going to aim for that – just want him to be healthy and feel less thin in my hands. He’s such a sweet little thing, very unsure of coming out of his cage by himself if i leave the door open! x

Don’t worry. He will put on weight with the proper diet. It won’t happen over night. It will take a bit but you don’t want to pack on the weight too quickly. A fat rabbit isn’t a healthy rabbit either.

With the running around thing it will take time for him to get comfortable. The more comfortable he is, the more he will start checking out his surroundings. It took Sally a good couple weeks before leaving her cage but Harley was wanting to check everything out since day 1! Every bun is different

I agree, he likely needs a but more time to settle. Trimming any long fur obscuring his vision might help though.

You mentioned the supreme science and the Excel brand. Just wondering why both? Is one harder to get hold of or are you just seeing which he does best on?

Yeah that’s true, he might just be shy, and needs time to settle in I have trimmed some of the long bits around his eyes so he can see, so hopefully that’ll help Supreme Science is easier for me to get hold of, so i’ve got some of that for the meantime until i can get some Excel, as my old bun was on that and lived till he was nearly 7
