Hello, everyone! I am a really new user on binky bunny, and figured that this would be a good place to ask my question. My baby Holland Lop, Bambi, isn’t coming home for a few weeks still (he’s only 4 weeks old) but I’m trying to get everything set before he’s ready to come home. My question is this: what is the best way for him to spend the hour and a half car ride home? I was planing on getting his a little pet carrier, but I’m not sure what should be in it other than food, water and maybe some bedding. Help, please! I want my bun to have a happy and safe car ride home. I was also wondering if Bambi could have or might like a blanket in his cage.

        Thanks a ton!

        -Amanda

Here are some pictures Bambi’s current bunny mama sent me, just for some cuteness.

          OMG!!!! Talk about cuteness!!!!!!!!!!!

Whenever any of my buns have had to travel, I always put a blanket in the bottom for some traction. I also include some hay, pellets, and a green leafy or two (although your guy is probably too young for the greens!!). I have found that a small water bottle or water dish that connects to the front door works best – a lose water dish usually ends up getting spilled by them (or sometimes my driving – heehee!!!). When the have had to travel alone (i have 2 bonded pair, so unless it’s an emergency, when 1 goes they both go!!), I also include a stuffed bunny friend (they each have one that generally hangs out in their cages) so they have something familiar to cuddle with!!!! In the end, it seems like I usually fret more over car rides than they do!!!!!!!

I would recommend a carrier with a blanket, some pellet, hay and a small water bottle, and maybe his current mom could give you a toy that he likes for some comfort!!!

Your baby is TOOOOOO FREAKING CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!! CONGRATS!!!!!

Aw! He’s so little and squishable – lol
I think having them in the dark helps so a pet carrier with a cover over it perhaps? If he’s used to hay bedding, maybe put a bunch of hay in there. Most rabbits don’t like travel so he’ll be a bit freaked. Once you get him home, maybe leave him in the carrier for a bit so he can settle. First time my rabbit took a car trip other than the 1st one home, she had some mushy poop and was a bit messy underneath. So I try cleaning it up but in hindsight I think I would have been best to leave her alone. They’re pretty good at cleaning themselves up.
              Hope Bambi goes well.

Yay for baby Holland Lops! I just picked up my little guy, Otto, a week ago today and we also had an hour and a half ride home. I lined the bottom of his carrier with newspaper in case he peed, then put a fleece blanket over it. I put some hay in the back, and he did enjoy snuggling in it, but I don’t think he ate much. I didn’t bother with water because it just makes a mess and he shouldn’t need to drink in that hour and a half anyway (I think for anything over 2 hours I would definitely put water in). He pretty much sat still and looked around him the whole trip.

Good luck with your new baby! He’s adorable 🙂

He is sooo cute! I think everyone already covered what you should put in there. I think the most important two things are making sure he won’t slide around (by putting a blanket or towel down) and that if he pees it won’t get all over him, so putting something absorbent in there is important. I usually put a towel in and then cover the towel with a layer of hay. A couple of my bunnies are nervous eaters so they start munching on their hay in the car.

Its also important to make sure he stays somewhat cool in the car. It doesn’t need to be freezing cold, but just make sure the sun isn’t shining right on his carrier and making him too hot.

I agree on something absorbent in the carrier like a towel or something else soft- and if the towel is thick enough and folded- your bun should not slide around much.  I would also see if the breeder can send you with something that smells familiar to the baby bun- like a washcloth, sock, etc- so something in the carrier is familiar and can be snuggled with.

So adorable…. My bunny travelled 4 hours home in the car and I had my sister with me and one of her friends. The bunny spent the whole time on my sisters lap in a blanket with a carrot and we stopped a few times to give water.

                                Amanda-

                                Bambi is absolutely precious!

You are a great bunny mama already!  Shows great care that you are thinking about all the details to just bring him home.  I have a feeling that Bambi is going to be one spoiled bun!

                                Congrats!

Aw, thank you. I’m trying pretty hard to get everything just right. I don’t want to be that irresponsible rabbit owner who feeds their bunny junk food and doesn’t believe in vet visits. Nope. Bambi is going to be one spoiled little bun baby.

I am continually learning how to be a better bunny mama.  I got my first bunny last July- Lily.  Now we also have Jester.  (I decided that Lily needed a friend/brother/boyfriend- she’s still deciding what he is) hehe

The pet stores can be so misleading.  When I first got Lily, I went and bought all kinds of treats/food from the pet store.  Then I started researching them and oh boy, SO much of what is marketed in the pet stores and websites specifically for buns are actually terrible for the buns.

I have learned SO much valuable information from Binky Bunny.

I can’t wait to hear more about Bambi and also see more pics of him!
