Last week we bought a bale of hay from a local farmer that has horses and some other livestock.  We put it in our wheelbarrow in the garage with a blanket under it and then flipped over the bale to protect it from dust, moisture, etc (I mentioned this in another thread also).  I had not gotten around to putting any of the hay in a storage bin so I can bring some inside the house until today.  I went out with the bin and scissors and made hubby come out to hold bin.  I cut one rope and was pulling handfuls out of the middle and trying to get it looser before I put it in the bin- as I find it easier to feed looser hay as opposed to compacted hay (makes less mess).  So I am a little paranoid from stories I read on here- and once when I was a kid I found a dead garden snake in a bale of hay- it had been “baled” along with the hay so it was flat and dry and disgusting (but better then moist/fresh).  Oh yeah, I am afraid of snakes.  I tell my husband “I better not find anything gross in here!”.  So just as I was pulling out of one of the last handfuls I thought I heard a little squeak- so I threw the handful back down and hubby asked “what is wrong”- I explained I thought I heard a squeak, but he did not hear anything so he picked up the handful and looked thru it and it was fine.  I think it must have been the grasses rubbing together or something and the fact that I was already thinking bad things that I ended up scaring myself!  Now that I think about it- the hay is so clean, not dusty, soft and fresh (was 3rd cutting this year)- that I totally set myself up for that mentally!

So the hay is squeaky clean eh?  My first thought was oh no a mouse in there.  OH the things we set ourselves up for I tell you.  All that brain chatter  going on up there.

My friends Dad used to have a hay baler.  HE accidentally baled up her cat. Poor thing.
