My bun appeared to lose a small tuft of fur yesterday from the back of her neck. Today, it has gotten significantly bigger. Tried cleaning gently with chlorhexidine from when she had sore hocks. It keeps getting worse, any ideas? I am going to call the vet in the morning, but there are no rabbit specialists in my area. Any help greatly appreciated.

It could be a fungal infection. I’d stop the chlorhexidine because it can, under certain circumstances, irritate rabbit skin and make matters worse.

It looks very red. Is it oozing? Do you see skin flakes that look like dandruff? Does your rabbit seem uncomfortable? It’s important that he keeps eating and drinking, which sometimes rabbits won’t if something is bothering them -even relatively minor things.

A vet should look at this, as you’ve already said yourself. If its a fungal infection, there are creams and also meds that are taken by mouth. Fungal infections can be stubborn.

I agree with Bam. It looks a bit angry.

Hi Bam and LBJ10, thank you for your help!! I made a vet appointment for first thing tomorrow morning. Her normal vet was out sick today 🙁

She is still in good spirits, thankfully, but it appears she has lost more fur throughout the day. Will post an update after vet.

Just got back from the vet, but she did not know what it is 🙁 They did a deep skin scrape and tape prep cytology, all tests came back negative. They took a sample to test for ringworm and will hear back in two weeks. Starting to treat for ringworm (miconazole) and recheck in a week.

It can be hard to pinpoint the cause of fur loss, but that doesn’t mean it cannot be overcome! I hope the ringworm treatment is successful! In my experience, ringworm tends to “run”, so the bald patch will get bigger, but then some fur might grow in as the patch moves about.

Is miconazole a cream? I am familiar with itraconazole and clotrimazole for ringworm treatment, but not that one.

Thank you for your well wishes! And yes, the miconazole the vet prescribed is a cream.

@floridabun any updates on your situation?

My rabbit Ollie had a ringworm/fungal infection on & between the neck and ear area earlier this year. If you’re still dealing with it or looking for any advice I am happy to help. Ollie was prescribed miconazole cream at first as well, but we found that the cream alone wasn’t enough, and seemed to irritate and annoy him – so he was put on an oral antifungal solution as well, that as well as the cream cleared it up in maybe 3-4 weeks.
