So I have a lovely little balcony off of my bedroom, and I’ve been trying to work out the best way to let Ponyo out onto it with me for some sit and read time, or for sunbathing, or a breeze.
I live in a neighborhood where things have to look good though… No hanging your washing outside here, no sirree. : <
I was thinking some bunny wire (not chicken wire, unless I can find a strong enough one) to attatch to the railings so it’s safe, and what I would love to do is grow some bunfriendly plants up it. Not only would it make it look pretty and make it seem less cage-like to Ponyo, but it’d give him something healthy to nibble on when we go out there for a lounge.
So, any ideas or comments to help me out with this? I’d love to be able to sit out there with im for some supervised airtime.
What are some good bun-able plants for me to grow out there in this british summer? :]
He loves dandilions already, hehe.
There is a thread in this section that Sarita made about ‘Catios.’ They are patios that people have modified for their cats. A lot of them are pretty extravagant but look up the thread, it has a lot of great ideas!
If you are in the UK, I assume your rabbit has been vaccinated against myxomatosis? If not, it’s is a bad idea to let him outdoors.
He’s had his Myxo AND VHD shots only about a month ago, so he’s all set. He’s had a roam on some grass with his harness once, and loved it, but we’d rather he had some balcony space to grow up with a little before we take him out more.
And thanks Minty, I’ll check it out for sure. :]
Great! When you get your balcony set up for him, please post pictures. I would love to see it.
This is Sarita’s catio thread. It looks decent too so nobody should give you a hard time.

Thanks a lot. :] I do wonder if an uncovered balcony is alright though. It’s high enough for him not to be able to jump ever, but still…
I’ll be sure to take pictures when it’s done! x]
If you supervise no birds will come for him, but depending on where you live, even a split second is enough for a predator bird to swoop down. I have eagles in my subdivision so I have a covered exercise pen for my rabbits.
You could put up a large parasol or any kind of canopy to ward off birds. Have hidey houses and tunnel structures for your rabbit to sit behind. Birds can’t fit into small spaces.
I remembered another member on here, Crayon, who has a balcony setup with edible plants. I am taking the liberty to paste a link to some of her photos here and will send her a mesage on your behalf to get some advice on which plants may work.

It’s a thin balcony, but i’m sure I can set up some playthings for him on it too.
We don’t get many birds of prey in East Sussex, in fact, there’s been a huge deal made about a little condor couple on top of a high block of flats accross town, eating pidgeons and the like, but other than that we just have the pidgeons themselves. xD
I did get attacked by a seagul on my way to wirth the other week, but the ones here aren’t so bad…
I’ll get a parasol, and perhaps a sort of scarecrow owl thing that my Boyfriend has. xD
I’ll sit there with a basebal bad and a backwards cap, ready to dissuade! Haha.
And awh, thank you so much! That would be lovely. <3
The lovely thing about putting plants out there is that your bun can help you grow them! Bunny poop makes EXCELLENT fertilizer, and it’s not “hot” so you can use it directly on your plants. I mix a layer in when I pot my plants, and everyone agrees that I have the healthiest deck gardein in the building.
I’m lucky enough to have a south-and-east exposure on my deck so I can grow just about anything. I grow a lot of greens like lettuces and mesclun greens, in tubs and in railing boxes. I also grow a lot of herbs like sage, thyme, lemon balm, catnip, and assorted mints. Radishes and carrots are good choices too – bunny gets the tops and you get the roots! Radishes grow very quickly in my climate and i’m having wonderful success with carrots in a self-watering planter – the ones in there are MUCH greener and healthier than the ones in the plain railling box. I am having mixed results with the snow peas (on trellises made from extra NIC cubes) but the nice thing about those is that even if I don’t get a lot of peas for me, Pepper can eat the vines and leaves.
Marigolds are also a good choice – they are pretty and utterly bunny-edible.
I have a hanging hammock-chair in the midst of my little garden-forest, and Pepper sometimes comes out to play. It’s a lovely relaxing thing to curl up with a glass of tea and a book and watch the clouds go by and the bunny bounce.
I use my xpen and set it up around the railing of my little porch. I just to it temporarily, because I don’t want to leave it out there to rust or look bad or anything. It’s easy enough to move in and out.
I always make sure I’m there to supervise, but it sounds like you plan to stay outside with him anyway.
As my bunny is not litter trained I have a hard time letting her run free in my bedroom but as I have a balcony I let her out there whenever the weather is not too hot. She makes a mess there but it is very easy to clean it up. I want to keep her out there all day except for noon when it gets hot…she will be out in the morning until 12am and then in the afternoon from like 6pm … I want to put something around the cage to protect her from mosquitoes as they come out in the evening. I will let her run only supervised of course with me reading something or just playing with her. I think it is a lot better and easier than having her inside as -being unspayed- she stinks a lot and in the night she digs in the plastic botom of the cage and makes a lot of noise waking everybody up..!
