Ok. Baileys is definitely ready to be neutered now. I found his private parts properly developed…! This is of course good news, becuase I am worried about Lemoncello’s virginity =), but I am also so frightened! For those of you who may be wondering, Lemoncello’s and Baileys’ bonding lasted approx. 2 seconds. They warmed up to each other immediately, now they look for each other all the time, they snuggle, groom each other, play, eat, you name it, they do it together. I am always supervising just in case Baileys tries to go beyond that friendship… Which he has tried already, more than once.

Anyways, the thing is that here in Argentina, there really aren’t many rabbit savvy vets… In fact, there are not many people who keep rabbits as pets, and there are even fewer who would care enough to take them to the vet… The truth is that, after a lot of research, I found one, who fortunately, I really liked. I asked her all the questions in the world and she answered them all perfectly and according to what I have been reading about rabbit surgery. Anyway, I know he will not get first rate care as he would if I lived somewhere else and that worries me a bit. But I guess there is not much I can do… She told me not to stop feeding him before the surgery, which I liked and I know it is soooo important. She also diagnosed properly snuffles in Baileys and gave me the right treatment for him. He overcame that in no time. (Another vet had prescribed amoxicilline, fortunately, I had done my reading and knew better than administering it). So,if everything goes as planned, he will be neutered next Saturday. It has to be on a Saturday because her clinic is very, very far away from home, and I can’t get there on a work day.

Question: I wanted to take Lemon with us, for company, for this vet to check on her and so as to avoid her not recognizing Baileys after surgery. Do you think it is a good idea, or is it too srtessful a situation for her to come. I know I’m gonna be very nervous…

        Thanks!!!

Here’s a pic of Baileys and Lemon having a supervised meal together!!

Awwww, look at those two!!! How cute!

I will be thinking of your Baileys and hope everything will be alright! Luckily, neutering a rabbit boy is easier than spaying a rabbit girl. Hopefully it will all be over with without any complications and he can be back with his Lemoncello in no time!
I am not rabbit savy enough to give good advice yet whether you should bring company or not. I used to do that with my rats, but I have found in the last few years that keeping them alone right after surgery allows them to just sleep more and heal on their own for a day or two. With bunnies… I have no clue. Sorry.

In my opinion, I think it would be OK to take Lemon to the vet in the carrier with Baileys. Afterwards you may want to have two carriers because Baileys probably won’t be feeling so well right afterwards and be very sleepy. When you get them home, you will have to keep them separated for a bit while Baileys heals because you don’t want Lemon irritating the incisions where the surgery was performed. What I would recommend for this time apart is letting them be in cages right next to each other so that they can still smell and see and lay next to each other. Do not let Baileys be very active while healing, and check on the incisions once a day to make sure that they are staying clean, and that the swelling is going down. Good job on finding a trustworthy vet & good luck to Baileys!

Thank you Liza and MooBunnay for your answers!! I think I will take Lemon with me. I agree it might be a good idea to keep them apart afterwards to give Baileys a chance to heal properly, I am already working on adapting his room to serve that purpose. I’ll keep you posted!!

Is Lemon spayed yet? I just want to make sure no one’s getting preggers here

Glad you’re getting him neutered – ya!

Yes – if they’re bonded it a VERY good idea to bring them in together. Bunny bonds can be broken when one goes to the vet and the other stays home.

Thank you for your answer and for your concern, Gravehearted. Lemon has not been spayed yet because she is not even 2 months old yet.

You will still need to keep them separate.  Baileys might still be able to get Lemon pregnant even a month after neuter.  Ironically enough, just today- one of my coworkers brought her dog in for an x-ray to check to see if she was pregnant and YUP she is pregnant.  My coworker was pet sitting a Lhasa that had been neutered on March 6th- and when she was pet sitting on April 7th- the dog mounted her unspayed female teddy bear dog.  After explaining to the kids that their “tails were stuck together” and they would be fine- she brought her in for x-rays at 45 days post mating.  And sure enough we can see 1 puppy on the x-ray.  Which is bad news anyway- 1 puppy can get to be very large and she has 3 kids so they are gonna get really attached.  But she will have to watch her dog VERY closely around delivery time to make sure she can pass the lone puppy.  (We will x-ray again later to see if we can see more skulls and backbones on x-ray).

That is and incredible story!! Yes, I will still keep them separate. It is really complicated, because she wants to be with him all the time. She sees him and she melts! Anyway, I am doing ok so far, though it is way more trying than I had envisioned… Hope they can be together soon!!

Awwww, Lemon sounds adorable! She is so little, she is just so very social that she wants to be with him. I guess you will need to make up for it… put that bunny costume on and be her special cuddle bunny! So, has he been neutered yet? Is he doing ok?
Once again, I realize how very fortunate I am here that I have adopted an already spayed and already neutered bunny and that someone bonded them for me. Basically, I’m getting to eat the cake while someone had to go through the trouble of finding the ingredients and baking the cake. I got the best part of it all!

I’ve been through exactly what you are going through though with rats. It’s HARD! Just remember, you are doing the best for them in the long run!

I have to admit there were times when I thought I had made a mistake adopting Lemon now, but I just couldn’t leave her where she was!! Finally, Baileys is gonna be neutered tomorrow. About the bunny costume, my hubby would certainly looooove to see that!!! LOL!
