I just got my bunny, Fievel, neutered 2 weeks ago. About a week later, Fievel and my other bun, Velvateen, were moved out of their cages and into an xpen with 3 litter boxes. Last week, both boys did very well using their litter box to pee in (not to poop, but I’m not worried about that) but this week, Fievel seems to have lost all control. He has peed out of the litter box 4 times… and thats just today! I clean their litter boxes daily, thinking that would be the issue. Also, I have seen both of them actually use the litter boxes. Fievel knows it’s there! When he pees, sometimes its right next to the litter box, sometimes it’s completely out of the xpen… there doesn’t seem to be much reason. I just got home a few minutes ago and I let them out like always and he peed on a phonebook that I had open on the floor. I can’t even remember him peeing outside of his cage when I first got him. Both bunnies always go on their bedding.

Both of them also drink pretty obsessively as well, but Fievel drinks way more than Velvateen.

The first thing I thought was that he must have a UTI of some sort. Is there a reason to think otherwise?

I am going to try to get him to the vet but if I can avoid it, I would like to. The vet here is pricey and on top of that, I don’t have a car so we’ll probably have to take a bus. It ends up being such an ordeal! Plus I’ve heard that the vet has to stick a needle into his bladder to diagnose this.. yikes!

Any advice? If it seems obvious that he has a UTI, please let me know! I don’t want him to suffer and if he’s in need of a vet, I will take him.

If it seems more behavioral/not completely litterbox trained, any suggestions as to what I can do besides putting him back in a tiny cage?

It seems like he is still hormonal. 2 weeks after a neuter, the hormones are still quite high, and will taper down after a while. Was his litter habit better before he was neutered?

Somewhat. He was in a smallish cage and he never really picked a corner or specific area to pee. But from what I can remember, he rarely went to the bathroom outside of his cage (other then pooping!).
I think that he just doesn’t bother to really seek out the right spot anymore. There is hay in his litter box so he’s in there a lot but it seems like a coincidence that he pees in there. :\

If you moved him to a new area, he could also be marking his territory.

Try having him use his cage as a litter box somehow and then remove it and replace the cage with a litterbox. My dad did that with his two rabbits and it sounds like it might work for you. Worth a try! He might just be used to going in the cage like you said.

Oh! I don’t know why I didn’t think of that! I am definitely going to do that tomorrow!
He just peed out of the litter box again and this time he was sitting in the litter box with his butt hanging off the edge. *Palm to forehead*
So he could be clumsy or territory marking. I don’t know which is worse. Haha
Thanks for the input and putting my mind at ease..

out of curiosity, what kind of litter boxes are they? the corner kind, or rectangular cat boxes?

Spencer used to pee off the end of the litter box a lot, so I got a bigger, taller litter box. That might help with at least one of the issues.

They are all rectangular. They had two but I just added in another one last night and no accidents outside of the litterbox!

Maybe he needed to have more potty options I guess. lol.

Oh good news! YEs with a neuter recent and a new home-I would expect wee spots. Of course if things continue maybe a vet visit. Or hey-will you be going in anyways to remove stitches or do a post neuter exam? You could bring it up then!

He still pees out of the litterbox when I’m cleaning all three litterboxes (I do it all at once), but other than that he is much better.
He actually wasn’t stitched up when he got neutered, he was glued! The vet doesn’t do post neuters either. :\

Maybe make sure that you have a litter box available to him all the time so maybe clean two, then put them back in the cage and then clean the last one so he always has at least 1 box all the time.
