Backer Board as flooring??

I was walking around Home Depot today to get supplies for Nimmy’s new cage. I happened to glance at backer board, which I didn’t know much about. It’s used as a base for flooring and something about drywall. Backer board is cement I believe. It’s waterproof and has indented grid lines on it so it’s easy to measure and cut. Feeling the backer board, it’s super sturdy and it’s not a slippery surface at all. So I was thinking about using it for the floor of Nimmy’s cage. I don’t like vinyl or laminate tyles which is currently the floor of his cage. So I want to try something new.

Is backer board safe to use? If not, what can I use instead? I remember reading something about coroplast? I’ll use that as a backup if the backer board isn’t safe

Backer board isn’t actually water proof, just water resistant, as in it doesnot mold or mildew and dries quickly. So it will absorb the moisture but end updrying so any accidents will stay and smell for quite a while.

Also, in my opinion coroplast are more slippery than laminate. Are planing on putting anything on top of this stuff or no?

Since my dryer only works when it wants to, I’m really trying to avoid putting any type of blanket or fabric down as the flooring since I wouldn’t be able to wash it regularly and I don’t think the laundromat would be happy about bunny-pee. So I was looking for an alternative, sucks that the backer board wouldn’t be useful. Are you sure? The label said “waterproof” Currently Nimmy has a laminate tile floor, since it’s super slippery I bought a hay mat from the BB store. But it still slides about on occasion and if he decides to pee on it I’m screwed. And if the coroplast is more slippery than laminate then I’m out of ideas.

And I don’t want carpet cause he’d chew it up and pee on it. So I’m really clueless right now.

How about carpet tiles? They have really thick rubber backs and a low pile that makes it tough for buns to pull the fibers out of, even for my bun who has eaten all my other rugs. If they do pee on them, the rubber back keeps it from soaking through to the floor and damaging the floor. I have a few extra tiles and when one gets soiled, I switch it out and take the soiled one out back to hose off with a bit of soap, though car washes are amazing for this kind of thing, too, then let it dry. The best part is they’re super cheap at closeout type stores (Big Lots, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, etc), so you can afford to have a few spares and you can cut them to whatever size you need. Under my bunnies’ cage, I have a cheap vinyl tablecloth covered with carpet tiles just in case the moisture would soak through if there was an accident and in case they shift around a little, but overall they work really well.
