lately i’ve been plucking loose chunks of fur from baby bun’s dewlap area.  this is nothing new really… she has always gone through phases of this.  what is new tho is that i noticed a huge bald patch under her chin!  she was grooming and twisted just the right way to give me a flash of it.  it’s in such an awkward spot to try to see… had to wrap her in a burrito to get a look at it.  it’s about an inch / inch & a half in diameter and tucked way up under her chin at the top of her dewlap.  the skin is pink & smooth & does not look or feel irritated.  i was able to twist her dewlap side-ways & get a pic of it but it’;s a bit hard to see.

can a spot like this happen from time to time just due to a molt?  i know tooth problems can cause drooling & thus irritation of skin / hair loss but her chin hasn’t been wet any time i’ve checked her today since i’ve noticed this spot.  also when we were investigating her runny eyes both vets commented that her tethe were really good for such an old gal.  does this warrant a vet visit do you think?  or should i keep an eye on it for signs of irritation for now?  what do you think?  thanks for any comments!

If you haven’t seen it wet then I wouldn’t worry. We’ve been having serious molts here and bald spots are soo not a worry to me anymore Had too many-you can actually see within a week the fur coming right in. Keep an eye for fur coming in or irritation. That could tell you which way it’s going. The pic to me looks like an ordinary molting bald spot.

BBM!!! YOUR BACK!!! lol Hows things otherwise? Busy at the new job?

Yes, and especially tucked in a place like that.

            Is she scratching?

Recently my Giselle had a bunch of bald spots too and was scratching but otherwise fine. I just did a dose of Revolution though just to be safe.

thanks k&k & sarita!  i haven’t seen her scratching at itbut i’ll keep an eye open for that.  and watch for hair re-growth / signs of irritation.  wierd… i’ve read tonnes of posts about bald spots but was still alarmed when i saw one on baby.  it’s in such a secret spot that for all i know she could get bald there often.

If the skin is not irritated – I think that you probably don’t have to worry too much. Juli gets bald spots all the time from Kramer’s excessive grooming, and the fur generally grows back just fine with no lotions or antibiotics or anything. The vet told me that it is not to concerning as long as the skin is not broken or bleeding.

Chuck actually came with this weird bald spot on his nose…now the fur is growing in there so he must have been molting at the shelter and still going strong (dang he’s going to be one totally hairless bunny if he doesn’t stop soon-and i’m going to be in hospital with a hair blockage!! ) ; It was bizarre looking but I can already tell it’s growing in-fairly easy to see, but it takes a few days/weeks to see it start happening.

just noticed this bald spot on Jessica tonight and was a little worried.  already had appointments for both buns on saturday and from what i have read i think this can hold over until then.  I will just need to keep an eye on it through the week.

Yes – I think it could probably wait until the appointment. From the photo it doesn’t look like the skin is bright red or bleeding, is it? Pink skin is normal, but if it is looking red or bleeding, you’ll want to find out what the source is. Can you tell if she is somehow causing it herself? It seems like its in a place where she might just be getting overgroomed, which is what happens to Juli too. Usually this will go away, but if the bald patch keeps getting bigger, and it is from overgrooming, let me know and I can give you some tips on that.

Her skin looks nice and healthy, just bald. very possible Marvin has been over zealous in grooming her.

edit, another pic i had uploaded but forgot to post
