just got back from the vet apt & unfortunately the mass removed from Baby was cancerous. the good news is that the tissue surrounding the mass which was removed had no cancerous tissue in it. so the lab & vet comments are that they "are cautiously optimistic" that the mass removal has cured the cancer! the fact that Baby’s xrays were clear contributed to this i’m sure.
they added that unfortunately the prognosis for this type of cancer (solid ductular mammary carcinoma) in rabbits is not well defined. i’ll be doing regular breast exams to keep an eye out for more tumors of course but aside from that… we’re all done.
i’m givin her lots of lovin head pets & officially declaring her in remission!
oops… forgot to add the most important part… THANK YOU for all your support & encouragement. it’s helped a BUNCH the last couple of weeks. Baby thanks you too with little bunny kisses!
I’m sooo sorry to hear that baby had cancer! But I am REALLY REALLY glad to hear that the vets are so optimistic!
Give her hugs for me! Glad it’s all over now and she’s feeling better
I”m so glad to hear that Baby is OK for now! Give her a couple head pet’s on my behalf ![]()
I’m glad everything is fine with sweet Baby. Continued healing vibes and kisses to her. I’m glad she has such a good bunny mom.
Glad to hear your bun is gonna be okay! Your bun is lucky to have a Mom who cares about her so much!
Nose rubs from me, Bonsai & Daffodil. Just FYI, here is some info on her cancer: http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/carcinoma.html Ironically, the story is about a rabbit named Baby as well. I am glad to hear that the cancer seemed to stay contained in the tumor, but like the vet said, cautiously optimistic and it will be even more important to do regularly scheduled check-ups and exams. My best to you both and may you both grow even closer from this experience.
Oooh sending lots of good wishes to Baby and you. I am very glad to hear that the cells surrounding the tumor were nor cancerous and really hope she’ll be cancer free. Sending lots of love your way.
thanks for all the well wishes
Baby is enjoying herself very much these days. she’s even exploring a little more than before and has – much to the dog’s dismay – even hopped up onto the couch in search of pets! (dog’s not allowed on the couch so there’s some jealousy involved i think)
Scarlet_Rose… thanks so much for the link to the story of the other Baby bun. what a coincidence! i’ve bookmarked it to refer to incase i find another lump in the future, so i can ask my vet about Tamoxifen as treatment.
wow im really happy that she’s okay! is that type of cancer like breast cancer? it gives me a whole new meaning to the pink ribbon! lol not that i didin’t feel that it was important before, it just has a new meaning when poor little bunnies can have booby cancer
good luck to you and baby!
yeah i think it is like breast cancer. the vet confirmed my suspicions that the tumor started in one of her nipples. so it’s bunny breast cancer… i’ve been saying that she has had a bunny-mastectomy. i was thinking that next year i’ll be running the breast cancer 5k for my aunt AND my bunny… lol.
awwww~

wow. that’s good that the vet think they got it all… are they being overly cautious that she may develop cervical cancer too? what kinda follow-ups are required? will you be doing checkups more often with her? i’ll keep her in my thoughts…
Here’s hoping that they got it all and that she remains healthy and cancer-free~

the vet was concerned about cervical cancer since she was not spayed, but seemed satisfied from her physical exam & xrays that she’s ok. since she has been deemed too old for spaying at this point they have us scheduled for a check up next year, & have shown me how to check her bellies for further lumps.
oh good. when i saw the word cancer, my first thought was… "well i know Baby’s not spayed… was it cervical?!" i’m glad that the vet is optimistic and definitely give her plenty of rubs for me!
thanks Beka! thats exactly what my vet thought too… saw her mass, knew she wasn’t spayed and felt around her tummy first thing to see if there was anything odd in/around her uterus. poor Baby! i sooo wish i’d have found Dr. Buhrows when she was wee to have her spayed. at least i have a sense of relief to have found her now. she certainly did a great job removing the mass. Baby’s incision has almost disappeared ![]()
You’re welcome babybunsmom. I found it a very interesting article that you just might want to have handy that you hopefully won’t ever need (knock on wood).
