The HRS website doesn’t say, nor does my rabbit book.  At what age do baby bunnies transition from their alfalfa pellets to timothy pellets?

        Thanks,

        Laura

Approximately six months. You can certainly transition before then-ideally mix the hay types and pellet types over time. The key is no dieting until they are fully grown unless a vet ok’s it -they do need lots of calories so if you can manage-unlimited pellets are fine at that age.

Buddie turned 5 mos. old Dec. 21st, and our vet told me when we saw her last month to start him on timothy pellets now. I’m just in the process of transitioning him over, over a 4-week period. This is the second week and so far he’s eating normally. I think he likes the timothy pellets.

Yeah, it is is a gradual process of slowly mixing in the tim pellets and then slowly phasing out the alfalfa… HRS and this site recommends 7 months but anywhere around that time is fine. You want them fully switched over by a year.

I started to mix Timothy in with the alfalfa when my rabbit was about 5 or 6 months old. A little bit more timothy hay pellets everytime and little less alfalfa! The alfalfa is a lot sweeter then the timothy, so slow transition is best. Also, I am sure everyone here knows this, but your bunny should also always have unlimited hay!
