My baby bunnies are still young but I am preparing and have some questions about diet.

If I am feeding them oxbow young bunny which has alfalfa in it should I still provide them with alfalfa hay as well?

How do I keep the mom away from the alfalfa hay or is it ok if she eats some as well?

Is is ok if the babies eat some of the moms timothy hay as well?

The baby bunnies can definitely eat both alfalfa pellets and alfalfa hay, or timothy based pellets and timothy hay, or any combination. But as an adult bun, the mom should not eat the alfalfa. Since you already purchase Timothy for the mom, it’s fine to have the baby buns eat the same hay.

I agree with Luna, I think that it would be easier for the babies to eat the Timothy anyway because they will eat that when they are older as well.

Ok so it isn’t bad for them not to eat alfalfa hay?

It’s not bad for the babies currently. In a few months, they’ll need Timothy. The mother shouldn’t be having alfalfa, however.

Currently they are only 5 days old and not eating anything except moms milk lol I am just preparing for the future. I was always told babies needed alfalfa hay until they were 6 months I think it was but I didn’t know if they still needed alfalfa hay if they also had alfalfa in their pellets. The mom is currently getting alfalfa in her pellets as well since shes still on the young bunny pellets because shes only 5 months old. If I can just start the babies on timothy hay and the oxbow young bunny pellets instead of alfalfa hay then I will do that but I just want to make sure that that is ok to do.

It is fine to give them either only alfalfa hay or alfalfa pellets. They don’t need both and it’s often easier to start them on Timothy hay than to try and switch hay later.

I agree, timothy hay and an alfalfa based pellet should be adequete for the babies when they are starting to have solid food.

I do think it would have been fine for the mother to have alfalfa hay, had you bought it.
Pregnant rabbits, then lactating rabbits need the extra protein and energy.
Your rabbit is also a young mother. But the pellets will be enough. Let her have an unlimited amount.

Yes I have been letting her have unlimited pellets and unlimited hay. I rescued her from a rescue I found on adoptapet, and we had no idea she was pregnant until we woke up to her pulling her fur out and came home to her having delivered babies. If I had known she was pregnant or could have been pregnant I would have provided her with a better diet

Alfalfa is fine for mom as long as she is still nursing the kits. She will need the extra fats and proteins
