My baby boy bun (5 weeks+/-) is quite an observant/explorer and a hearty eater. It’s either I see him munching on his food or exploring about his cage; sometimes I see him lounging around his iced water bottle especially when it’s hot, but still very awake (nose twitches) and watching his surroundings.

The only time I would see him in a deep sleep (eyes closed/half closed) and lying spread out on his side is when he’s in my arms or on me — which my boyfriend finds cute but gets annoyed when he wants his turn to cuddle with me!

He ( we’re talking about the bunny from this point on ) let me hold him with his blankie and immediately he gets knocked out. Leads me to think he’s exhausted the whole time or sleep deprived.  I have him on me until he wakes up and starts munching on my clothes, by that time I place him back in his cage to eat his food. I observe him after and he still sits there with his nose twitching. Or sometimes he’s kind enough to scurry off me and pee elsewhere, by that time he must get back into the cage because I get a bit pissed myself since I need to change the sheets in the middle of the night. Most of the time I fall asleep too, when I realize I have a bunny on my chest, he’s still there sleeping.

I’m worried my baby bun isn’t getting enough sleep… is this normal? or i’m just a paranoid mum?

I know I shouldn’t let him get used to this because it might be a problem when he gets older (and I’m not gonna get a decent sleep myself), but I’m such a softie.

         Charcoal and me.

Oh that’s cute! My only suggestion is to give him something soft, like a cuddle sack or a small pillow, to sleep on. Just make sure he doesn’t chew on it because they could be harmful if ingested.

He’s sweet. Baby bunnies just sleep alot. I think something soft to nest in is a good idea as well. Also babies this age really have a hard time controlling when they pee or poop so they just pee where they are.

                Completely cute!

I have a young rabbit who settles in to nap on my lap. He just enjoys being held which is completely novel to me as my other rabbits… not so much. I really believe it’s just a baby bunny thing but some mature and still enjoy a snuggle.

You are wise to limit this though as rabbits can be demanding and they are very persuasive! I agree, try a little pet bed or even make a little nest out of some of your clothing.
Rabbits sleep with their eyes open also, so when you see him in his cage sitting still and nose barely twitching, he’s probably sleeping then. I wouldn’t worry about him being deprived.

Oh my I don’t have any suggestions, all I can say is he is the sweetest little bunny! My rabbits are very independent, you are so lucky to actually have one that adores you as he does

That is so cute! I used to have a puppy who would sleep on my chest like that. Eventually it became obvious, based on that and other things she did, that she was using me as a surrogate for the mom and litter mates she’d left behind, she liked to hear my heart beat while she slept. It was adorable, but of course she grew out of it eventually (both literally and emotionally, hard to have a 50 lab sleep on your chest).

                             Thanks guys!

I named him Charcoal because he reminded me of charcoal sketches.

Here are a few more pictures of him sleeping on me.

second night after i got him, Charcoal exhausted after i introduced him to our yard…

while i was doing some late night work on my laptop, he was snoozing on my lap, i scooped him up and he didn’t care…

just a few minutes ago, he’s inching closer and closer to my face… and i get occassional licks on my chin.

That moss green looking cloth used to be part of a sweater…  he refused it a couple of times until I dabbed a little of my daily cologne on it.  the same cloth without the scent he doesn’t snuggle into… i guess he liked my citrus scent.

I better get moving on that soft/pillow bed for him…

At that age, he would usually still be sleeping with his litter mates if they were around, so it should be mostly an age thing. Try wrapping an old fashioned hot water bottle (filled with bunny body temperature water) in a towel or sweater that smell like you, and put it in a cozy box/bed.
