Don’t agree guys. from mid-May to mid-July, quite simply gorgeous.
Summer arrived truly in advance… its not too bad here now (northern France so hardly sunshiney)

It rained last week and a neighbour shrugged shoulders in a very typical and realistic French way, sighed by saying pffffff at the same time and said, “bad weather we’re having this summer”!!!! That in one short sentence sums up, for me, the French mentality.
I reminded her that we have short memories and how wonderful the weather had been up until then…. she sort of agreed, but the negative side was the first side remembered…. as a positive and happy go lucky “grin and bear it” Brit (me!). it becomes quite tiring…. but I’m well aware that some Brits have this attitude too…. (sigh)…

So, I’m sticking up for the sun !!!

Oh hi guys

I’m back on here. I was LoveChacha’s Mom. I decided to come back after a lot of changes in my personal life and such. Lots of changes, indeed, haha. I’m now a nurse in the medical field (it was my dream) and I now live with my boyfriend of two years, alongside with our adopted rescue bun, Prescott. Chacha bun passed away last year of bloat. I miss her dearly. But Prescott is an amazing boy. He is loving, loves pets, snuggles and his humans. I have been truly blessed with having bunnies that groom their humans!

I’m happy to be back and hope you all are doing great I’ll be around.

Breintje finally got his VHD2 shot today, we were pretty anxious about it because the vaccine wasn’t available for quite a while. Bas had to go alone this morning because I had a bad day.

The vet also checked Breintjes skin and moult. He’s still at it, since March/April! He even has a bald spot where the fur came off without new fur underneath. We were concerned about parasites, but he’s okay. She was happy with the things we’re already doing to help him (brushing, gently plucking out stuck tufts and giving him a small portion of sunflower seeds every evening). We’ll just have to wait it out and deal with a grumpy, itchy, hungry bunny and all the flying fur…

Happy gotchya day Chewie and Q8!!

Ugh small rant…I’ve been having an awful few months lately, I’ve been getting sick repeatedly over the year due to a problem with my baby making apparatus, which means that for about 3 weeks a month Im in enough pain that I’m throwing up and fainting and generally being dizzy and weak. Its not that bad, but its really debilitating. On top of that I’ve been evicted from my house, and moved back home. Im supposed to be doing a project for my masters but it’s really fallen to the wayside as Im struggling a lot with everything. I asked my doctor for a note to say that what I had was debilitating and the move was stressful, as I’d hoped I’d get an extension for my work.
My doctor refused.

To top it all off I totally forgot about a project meeting I had with my supervisor today, and just had to send the most apologetic email known to man…while also trying to hide the fact that I’ve done 0 work since the last meeting

This is the second doctor!(Third when you count the one I went to 7 years ago who dismissed everything I said)
It’s a problem all of my moms side seem to have, though two of my aunts ended up being hospitalized with ruptured cysts so it’s annoying that doctors dont take me seriously when I say Im concerned.
Some of them like to act like I’m just being melodramatic about everything (“they’re cramps, sometimes they feel a little worse for some women, take some paracetamol”)

It was actually funny, I was feeling sorry for myself earlier, and was kinda crying..and yumi just wasnt having it. She started stamping and nipping at me. Which prompted Peep to also start stomping.
Great comfort guys… It did cheer me up though so I guess it worked!!

Keep going girl, until you find a doctor who understands! I guess all the doctors you saw were men? They often treat womens’ problems as “just usual womens’ stuff, quit nagging”.

Dface – I’ve rarely had doctors take me seriously. And even had one say to me in a frustrated voice “well, I can’t help you”. There are a lot of girl problems that can cause a great deal of pain. Just because one of these women doctors you saw hasn’t experienced such problems, doesn’t mean that your pain isn’t real.

That’s crazy! PCOS sufferers tend to respond very well to a combo of metformin, spironolactone, and (optional) a birth control pill. It takes a while to regulate, but it works!

Quick FYI (I had made a post in the bonding forum but just in case) I have decided to adopt another bun to bond with Tony! We’re in contact with a couple of shelters at the moment but it’s really frustrating and difficult to adopt buns here so I don’t know how it’s going to pan out right now. Hopefully it’ll all be okay and we find the perfect match!

Lbj- I’m the same.. I’m terrible for watching late night movies (that I’m not even interested in in the first place! )

TM- I couldn’t get over how difficult adoption is here. But lots of people don’t surrender their rabbits to shelters, they try and sell them or find them homes themselves (which I guess is pseudo responsible). Unfortunately that means that they are rarely neutered. I also found people to be very “it’s only a rabbit even in the shelters I tried) I was lucky with Yumi- she kinda fell in my lap (someone told me of a gorgeous bunny who wasn’t wanted) and I jumped through hoops to get Peep.
Just keep in mind that despite the headache now, it’s worth it watchin buns who weren’t given the right life first time around realise what it means to be spoiled rotten!

Yeah I’m shocked the amount of shelters who don’t automatically vaccinate/neuter small furries because they’re “just rabbits”. WHY DO YOU THINK THEY CALL IT BREEDING LIKE RABBITS!? Luckily I’m in touch with two responsible shelters, but there isn’t many buns around. So far I have three options;

1. An unspayed female baby (unspecified breed but apparently quite small), only about 4/5 months old who’s in a bad living situation. I’d rather a spayed bun but I’m concerned about her because it’s kind of an urgent case to get her out of her current situation :/

2. A neutered girl whose bonded mate just died and the family are unwilling to bond her again. She’s 3/4 years older than Tony, and I’m not sure how I feel taking on a grieving bun for my first bond? I don’t know. It could complicate matters. Also I was hoping for a bun closer in age to Tony because of how upset they get when a mate passes on.

3. A year old neutered rex female. I got slightly confused by the amount of bunny talk at this point so I’m possibly getting confused on this, but I think she has serious teeth issues which I really don’t want to take on. Also she’s twice Tony’s size! And he is no small bun. I’m not sure I’m comfortable with a 10lb second bun.

Difficult choice, but I guess #3 is already out of the question, as you mentioned. Teeth issues are extremely costly, and if the rabbit has many characteristics you don’t like…

With the other two girls it’s a matter of behaviour and health I guess. Those living conditions of bun #1, how bad are they? So bad that they could cause hidden health issues (foot sores/parasites)? Or does she have behaviour problems because of abuse?

Bun #2 sounds great because she was already socialised and spayed, but you already mentioned the reasons why you could decide not to choose her.
I’d say: check the health and behaviour of girl #1 and if it’s not good, either take a second look at girl #2 or keep looking for others.

Gaaah! Empty nest syndrome here and the bun has only been gone for half an hour! Bas took him to his room because there’s a huge hardcore “music” festival in our neighbourhood tomorrow. Last year it was so bad that our floor and windows were vibrating on the beat, at more than a kilometer away. Not a good bunny environment, he goes crazy when our neighbours occasionally put on techno music with a heavy bass.
I’ll join them tomorrow for a sleepover, luckily it’s only 1 day.

TM- don’t get a bunny with dental issues. They are so difficult to deal with, and it can quickly turn into a nightmare. Is there any chance Tony can meet the other two options as the decider? No point committing to one if he’s paws down not going to like them.

Unneuterd is a pain because you need to pay for it, BUT keep in mind that they will have to be kept seperate for a while anyway. Personally I dont like the ordeal of neuters so I’d lean towards the 2nd girl. But there is always an age gap to mind…and the question of whether they are telling the truth about age .

Ellie-Being apart for any amount of time is horrible-you get so used to them always being around it gets weirdly lonely without their little faces acting like they are listening to you :/

I could be mistaken about the third girl, because the lady I was speaking to was very exciteable and talking a lot about her own rescue buns and everything so I was getting confused by which bunny is which… She was a volunteer at the shelter and goes to the same vet so they passed on my number to her. She’s going to get the shelter manager to call me tomorrow and hopefully I’ll get a clearer picture of the situation then.

The first girl as far I can see was bought a month ago, stuck in a very small cage, and totally ignored ever since. The owners tried to return her but the pet shop wouldn’t take pets back. She hasn’t even been named.

Also still waiting on vets documents about the middle one because she was adopted two years ago and I do want to be careful about her age. I don’t want to bond Tony and twelve months later have him grieving because his wife was more mature than we thought.

I’ll know more over the next few days but I want to make a move on things this weekend, as it’s a three day weekend and the extra time off work would really help get everyone settled in.

Ellie, I totally get the separation anxiety! But you totally made the right call I think, that noise sounds super stressful for him, plus he’s had a long week with the vaccines! It’s good for him to get a little holiday ?

Thanks for the support, I think it’s best for him too. He gets super stressy when the floor rumbles, whether it’s from a passing lorry, loud music or roadworks.
Funny that you mention it BTW, he really needs to get out once in a while to prevent boredom. We’ve noticed that after a couple of weeks he starts “exploring” around the house, purposefully trying to get into all the places where he shouldn’t be. After we’ve taken him on a short journey to Bas’ parents or Bas’ house he’s suddenly on his best behaviour again.

TM – From what I’ve seen here on the forum, grieving bunnies are often welcoming to a new friend. In fact, some people will get a new bunny ASAP when one of a bonded pair dies suddenly because the other bunny is grieving so badly. This isn’t going to be the case 100% of the time. But if you’re looking to help out a bunny, I would consider her just as “in need” as the other one you mentioned.

So it turns out I was wrong about the Rex. She’s a mini rex and in perfect health, and quite shy but very sweet. She’s an ex show rabbit.

I decided the unneutered girl was just too much to take on regardless of how much I want to help. I just don’t feel I can take on keeping two separate buns for that long. My house gets busy at the weekends and it’s just not equipped for an extended separation of bunnies.

I went to go visit girl 2, but it got very weird. Her family were quite reluctant to let me see her vet records and weren’t very flexible with times etc. When I said I couldn’t go at a certain time because I had to meet another bun, they got pretty pissed off and seemed to think I was going to show up with a carrier and take her there and then. The girl got her boyfriend to send me a text asking was I just wasting their time or what, and it made me really uncomfortable so I decided not to go.

I met the mini rex today (and a fourth option of a giant white that was just insanely boisterous. Super funny to watch but it actually got really irritating after a little bit), and I really love her. I decided to adopt and she’s coming home tomorrow. The shelter manager is going to bring her just to check out the house, and providing he’s happy, we’ll have a bunny wife! I couldn’t bring Tony speed dating, so I’ve arranged to foster her until we are sure they’ll get on, and the shelter will help me with bonding. The guy has bonded millions of buns so that’s an amazing resource to have! I’m cautiously optimistic

I did want to echo what LBJ said about grieving buns. They often bond readily with a new rabbit after losing their bondmate. Also, in regards to age – life expectancy can vary quite a bit. Small breeds tend to live longer then giant breeds, for example. There are always exceptions to the rule though.
I have a 10yr old dwarf lop with a 5-6yr old NZ white. According to Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund, my NZ life expectancy is 4-7 years.    And over age 4 is considered senior, whereas the dwarf lop is considered a senior at age 6.

I don’t mean to say all that is a push for that #2 bun. It sounds as if it was wise to go with your instinct if that family were not very accomodating. A shame really that they are wanting to rehome her. If the shelter you dealt with was good, do you think it would be worth recommending it to them?  Maybe if they surrender her to reputable shelter, they’ll pair her up with one of their rabbits. A ready made pair for someone else looking to adopt.

Yeah I spoke with the rescue organization that had put me in touch with the family and they were quite apologetic, and I mentioned it to the guy at the shelter and he was surprised that they hadn’t called him about the bun as he takes in some buns to Foster for the rescue organization, and said he would get in touch with them.

See the rescue organization is just a group of volunteers who help with rehoming and foster buns when they can, but they have no actual premises. The shelter is a bunny barn out in the country but they are stuffed to capacity. Ireland is a small place though, so all the bun lovers know each other.

Carmela came home today!!! I’m going to go to the pet shop in a bit and get her a couple of bits. She seems to love hiding much more than Tony so I’ll get her an igloo and a stuffy and some proper litter because the horse hay they liked her litter box with smells very strongly of farmyard and my Dad is getting annoyed. I got a strip of carpet for her too because she’s a Rex and I’m concious of her hocks on the wooden floors. Currently I’m sitting cross legged on the floor of her room quietly and waiting for her to react. She’s peeked out of the carrier a couple of times but she hasn’t ventured yet with me in the room.

I’m going to start a thread in the bonding forum so I don’t totally bore you guys to death ?

YAY! Totally over the moon! We won the European Championship Football, in my hometown ^_^ So glad that our Lionesses managed to make it to the final, and win it as well. It was a very exciting match against an excellent opponent Denmark, who gave us a huge scare in the first half by scoring a goal within 6 minutes.
The men have made a mess of it the last couple of years, and we’ve been denied any football success the last years, so it’s an even sweeter victory

As I was going home this morning, our city was already filling up with a mass of fans all dressed in orange. It’s going to be one massive party throughout the night.

LOL, even though people may not be football fans, they may be pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere surrouding women’s football. Men, kindly take note: this proves you CAN play or watch football without acting like a complete sack of *beep* or tearing down the town. We saw fans of both countries having fun together in the streets, excellent sportsmanship of the players (no arrogant diva behaviour, fake dives etc.), and all in good fun with a lot of excitement. To me this is football as it should be: players going for it together as a team, and fans whose behaviour you can be proud of

Anybody have a bun that grinds it’s teeth for no reason? Mellie is grinding hers pretty loudly right now but she seems fine. Pooping, eating, loafed out in the middle of the rug, not hiding or anything. Content to have her cheeks stroked. I’m confused.

Sounds like she’s having the time of her life! Rabbits grind their teeth the same way cats purr: when they’re enjoying themselves but also to calm themselves if they’re ill/in pain. Very loud tooth grinding in combination with hiding/not eating is an indication of illness or pain. Soft tooth grinding while in a comfortable position is a sign of happyness. Breintje does it quite often when he’s loafing on the ground after a good meal or after being petted. This means she’s extremely content, so very well done! ^_^

Hehe, I guess most people who hate football hate the behaviour of some fans. Today showed that you can get above the level of “You fan of other team, me smash yer gob!”, and still have loads of fun.

My god. My pair are driving me insane. Playing chasing at 5 in the morning. I mean,yeah it’s adorably cute to watch them binky and zoomied after each other, delighted with themselves…but they start at five and keep it up til 830 am -then it’s nap time!

I’m also very conscious that I’m living at home, and my family like to sleep in on the weekends-a completely foreign concept to rabbits ..”but morning is the best part of the day, silly hoomans!!”

Hazel, Effi’s CT showed three somewhat degenerated discs that probably don’t put pressure on her spinal cord/nerves. But she also has quite a lot of degenerative changes to her vertebra and cartilage. New bone spurs are forming and there’s inflammation. We got a new med for her, gabapentin, but it’s making her appear almost lobotomized, so will be trying a lower dose and only before bedtime. She’s too keep taking Previcox (antiinflammatories) for the foreseeable future. Re-check Aug 21 =)

@Dface: yup, that’s crepuscular animals for you. Great to hear that they’re having so much fun, but they’ll never comply to human times. Early morning and late evening are the bunny golden times.

@bam: poor Effi, I hope that the medication will calm down the inflammation. Did the vet suggest something like physical therapy?

[grumpy rant] I’m going through an all-nighter here, and even as a night owl it’s quite unpleasant. Because of the holidays the physio was completely booked for the first half of the week, except for tuesday at 8:00. This means that I have to get up at 6:00 to take my meds and prepare. My inner night owl was screeching in horror, but I had to make the appointment because my shoulders are completely stiff. At 2 my mind was finally calm enough to get into bed, but I couldn’t sleep. Just as I started to doze after 2,5 hours of turning in bed I heard scary noises just outside my house. Turns out that there was a repair guy fixing a lamppost at freaking 4:30 in the morning. Grumble, grumble, I thought I kept ungodly hours… Of course Breintje is wide awake now, demanding his breakfast by rattling the cage bars. Off to an early start of the day. Early bird, worm etc… I prefer to look at it from the worm’s point of view: sleep in and you would have been alive! [/rant]

Yup, had a nightmare sunday night in which I dreamt that I forgot Breintje on the train when I left, and woke up crying and in a panic. I called Bas and he decided that it couldn’t wait until wednesday: he brought Breintje over immediately. Breintje is happy to be home again and is very cuddly. Sorry to say that Bas is glad that he’s at my place again: Breintje misbehaved horribly. He chewed the corner off a mattress because he thought it was in the way, and finally settled the score with the last piece of unchewed skirting board in Bas’ bedroom. There goes your deposit… The little devil

Just got back from the vet with Apollo and Luna. We went in for check ups and vaccinations. Vet was very pleased with their weight, teeth, etc. Though I must have inhaled about a kg of Luna’s fur while there Poor little thing was quite scared. Apollo was pretty chill as per usual. I asked her about the fleck in Luna’s eye that I found ages ago, she said it’s fine as long as it’s not changing and it doesn’t look like it has any depth to it. Not the word she used but I can’t remember exactly. So all is well, I’m just a little poorer than I was before, lol.

Bun parents are usually skint. When we’re not contributing to our vets’ kids’ college funds, we’re splurging on not quite strictly speaking necessary items for the bunnies (or items WITH bunnies on them )

My Cali suffers from furballs (likely to be a very mobile street cat turned lazy house cat and slowing down digestion) and I now have a tube of malt stuff to give her a bit of twice weekly. it’s supposed to help digestion movements and makes the fur go out through the back door than stay put, block and be vomitted back up.

Touch wood, it seems to be working, she hasn’t brought anything up for 2 weeks …… (you watch, she’ll prove me wrong by leaving a package later… )

IT’S HERE!!! (Or rathere, ‘there’, since it went to my parents’ place in Canada.)

Chewie’s quarantine quarters have arrived. It’ll be so weird to see him on Skype in an enclosure. He’s never had one with me. Poor little bub… I better start downloading classic prison escape movies and shows for him to watch.

So what do you guys think? His shipping crate will be attached on the outside via the bigger access door, creating a second ‘room’ he can hide in, and his potty and bowls and a few toys (and maybe a blankie) will go in the run itself.

I know it seems wrong to enclose him in after having so much freedom but it will definitely help him settle when he arrives. Rabbits given too much space all at once often freak out and dont know where is ‘safe’ and it can be more stressful, so having a smaller set territory thats all ‘his’ and that he knows every inch of will actually be a better way of getting him comfortable in his new world (like Bam said)

It’s also great that the quarantine is home quarantine..although I cant say it sounds very effective…?

The part about rabbits needing to have a small piece of territory to call their own is excellent advice, which I intend to follow when my new buns come home to live with me. I’m planning to set their new habitat up with food, water, litter, shelter boxes, toys, all the things they’ll need, and then leave them in peace and quiet for at least a day or so (not ignoring them, mind you – I’ll be talking to them a lot!). giving them the time they need to get accustomed to their new home. I’ll want to keep entry into their bunny condo to a minimum necessary to refresh their victuals and water; among other things, as Panda and Fernando develop their sense of territoriality over their new residence, they’ll rightly resent any trespassing and quite possibly take vigorous exception to the impertinence!

Dface: He flies to Canada on April 12/13 (middle-of-night flight).

The home quarantine requirements are quite strict – my parents’s property and Chewie’s set up will be inspected; Chewie will be accompanied by an officer from the airport to his ‘house arrest’ space; and until the final visit by an officer and vet (for final clearance and release), he’ll have a number of unannounced inspections by an officer. It’s pretty intense. My parents are basically signing papers that make them legally liable in case anything happens – and the Canadian agro and wildlife ministry is scarier than friggin U.S. homeland security. I’m flying over in December just to help my parents set up his space.

One thing that I have learned from being on this forum is how absolutely EASY I have it here in the U.S! I have immediate access to pretty much anything I need for my buns, I have central A/C to keep the little fluffs cool, and I don’t have to comply with any crazy quarantine regulations!

That being said…….. sometimes I think there is a little too much freedom here in the USA…..and everyone just acts a fool……..

Weeell… quarantine applies only because Chewie’s Kuwaiti (i.e., not North American). If he were immigrating from the U.S., it wouldn’t be necessary.

Oh, I didn’t know that! Makes a little more sense now… Still, I can’t imagine the US requiring quarantine of “imported” animals. I’ve never tried though so I’m not sure of the regulations here. Hope all goes well!

Several animals (civets, because they carry the SARS virus, and African rodents) are prohibited from being brought into the United States, and some states and cities have regulations of their own restricting various animals. California, for instance, forbids pet ferrets. And New York City bans pet rabbits.  While there’s no quarantine requirement on pet rabbits being brought into the U.S., my reading leads me to think that Customs can require proof that the bunny is in good health, which likely means they would have to be examined by a vet before the trip.

I thought that quarantine was fairly standard when pets move country, just to be sure that they are healthy and non contagious before they start interacting with local animals and people. It’s cool that you can do it in your home now though. So much less stress!

Doubtful if I’ll see it; I have to work for a living and even if I should actually be off that day, it’s the weekend we (I and my confreres at Friends of Rabbits) are planning to move Panda and Fernando home with me, and I’ll probably be fixated on seeing my bunnies settled in their palatial new home (it ought to be palatial, as much as I’ve spent on it! ) instead of a silly solar eclipse.

Oh, and speaking of spending, I had myself a nice little shopping trip today. Drove down to Pet Supplies Plus in Fairfax, VA where Friends of Rabbits, the folks from whom I’m adopting P. and F., host a “new rabbit of the week” Q&A session every Saturday morning. I got a good deal of business done about the mechanics of moving the buns from foster to forever, and loaded up a shopping cart with bunny gear basics:

– A big bag of mixed fresh grass hay (provided free to me, a nice surprise that, by FoR):
– A 42″ high playpen, with eight 2′ panels, purchased from FoR:
– A large litterbox (with scoop), a 5-pound bag of Oxbow Basics timothy pellets which should hold two small rabbits nicely for several months, a big package of Carefresh paper multicolor “confetti” bedding/litter, a small ceramic dish for said pellets and a big ceramic dish (a dog bowl, actually) for water, to be shared by both (I understand they’re good at sharing). All at a 25% referral discount provided by FoR.

The only things I didn’t manage to get today were a carrier (we looked at several, but none of them is quite right so I’m going to hold off on that for right now and Friends of Rabbits has some which might answer) and Oxbow Simple Rewards treats, which Pet Supplies + doesn’t carry, I will have to check Petsmart and Petco. That aside, I’m feeling pleasantly content as I gaze at the stack of rabbit supplies sitting where their bunny condo will be erected several days hence.

Happy birthday Q8! I keep forgetting we are almost birthday buddies (mine is Monday).

The eclipse is sort of a sore subject for me. We are in the path of totality where I live. BUT, we had asked my mother-in-law to get us a condo in Colorado in August. Originally she had us booked for over my birthday (yay!) and then she changed it. We will now be gone during the eclipse. It’s only 95% there. To get to the path of totality, it’s a 3.5 hour drive to Wyoming. My husband doesn’t want to do it because I’m sure the traffic will be out of control crazy (people from Colorado making the drive up there). I’m pretty upset about it, actually.

I don’t think I would have taken the day off of work, necessarily. I’m sure everyone will just go outside to see the eclipse as it peaks (they have glasses in the office, I assume for that purpose). But a bunch of my coworkers are actually requesting a day of vacation for that day. My boss knew I was going to be gone. But he was like “uh, someone needs to be here that day”. LOL They are having a ton of events here and they are expecting to close down the highways in a few places. I don’t think they will close school. I imagine they will just take all the kids outside. I believe they have glasses for all the kids. The local natural resources district paid for them.

So… most of the modes in the camera do not take single pictures. Instead it is a burst and then you select the one that you want. The problem is, I can’t seem to figure out how to do much else besides that.

So Sir Mo didn’t do it, neither did Bolt, but when our four boys flew home to GOLD victory and I cheered and screamed and clapped as they won, Jess who was in the rabbit enclosure jumped high out of dozing, scared. Frightened the $*&!e out of Henry who was sleeping next to her, who bolted through the open enclosure and three furries jumped off the ground (cats on kitchen table, Henry bolted into the kitchen under table) …. OOPS sorry guys….. and Zou just remained laid out chilled…. lol

LBJ10, I forgot we are birthday buddies!

Went to my mum’s yesterday for lunch. Hubby stayed home as he’s unwell, but I got to catch up with my brother and his family which was nice. Mum gave me a bird book, The Australian Bird Guide, it’s the latest and greatest most comprehensive single book bird guide. So being a bird nerd I’m pretty happy about that Today is looking to be great weather wise so I’ll probably take Dory outside, give her a shower with the hose and let her sit in the sun.

I was lucky enough to see a total solar eclipse back in 2003, or was it 2002? In any case, there was one and they selected a few interested people from my school to make the 9 hour bus trip to the other side of the state to see it. Totality was really cool, I’m really sorry you’re going to miss it LBJ, maybe you could just drive the 3.5 hours anyway and just leave everyone behind

this is a really sad post for me around this time last year may first rabbit nibbles passed away. she wasn’t the best rabbit and i didn’t know how to take care of a rabbit at that time. the reason she wasn’t very good was because she was neglected at her old home before i got her and she was just barely domesticated so she was to feral to really make into a cuddly nice pet. even if she wasn’t the best I really loved her she died if a hair ball or cancer. it was really hard to deal with because she died in my arms right after I got home from someone’s house and then like two days after that I had to bathe one of my chickens for the fair I turned away for a second and she ate some water and bubbles from the soap. the chicken was named tulip and she was my favorite. so obviously right now is not the bets time for me. they both have a shared grave in the garden where they loved to play.

I was willing to make the drive, but I’m afraid traffic will be terrible. I mean, wouldn’t everyone be heading to the same place at the same time? You probably aren’t aware, but everyone is making this out to be such a big deal. Hotels all along the path of totality have been booked for months. Different cities have different events planned. Everyone is expecting a ton of people. It’s crazy. In fact, our city had special eclipse signs made that they sprinkled around town. You know, for fun. There are T-shirts that say “I got mooned” and the date.

What’s this about a total solar eclipse? Like in The Mummy with Brendan Frasier? If so, cooooool! I’ve only ever seen totals on film – never in person. What exactly are eclipse glasses and how come LBJ’s office happens to have them? (I assume they’re not just sunglasses.) I kind of wish the sun would get blotted out here too – the hysteria that would ensue would be even more entertaining than watching the wailing women in wheelchairs who come bursting into the emergency room with an ingrown toenail or something similarly trivial. ???????

Q8 – Yes, there will be a total solar eclipse that travels across the continental US on the 21st. You can buy eclipse viewing glasses. They aren’t sunglasses. They are special glasses (most of them look like cheap paper 3D glasses for the movies) that you wear so you don’t burn your eyeballs staring at the sun. Everyone is getting them. I guess someone brought some it at work because they were sitting in the front office.

I’m sorry to hear that Blue Moon. I certainly understand where you are coming from. When I was 15 my childhood cat had to be put to sleep 4 days before my birthday. It took years for me to forget that time of year as a sad time. Now I often miss the date, but sometimes I remember a day or two later and feel sad that I forgot, but at the same time that’s part of healing and recovering and it will go away over time. It is nice to remember them at those times and to think of all the fond memories.

I forgot to say in my earlier post that Dory has some new words in her repertoire. She said hubby’s name once, only once so I was actually unsure about it but it was loud and clear and said in my tone of voice, lol. It was kind of strange to hear, haha. She also says “Good girl” although I haven’t heard her say it. Apparently while I was at work a few days ago she was saying it on repeat for almost an hour. So that’s “Hello”, “Hello Dory”, hubby’s name and “Good girl”. She also has lots of beautiful new feathers coming in from her moult. One of her new tail feathers has a yellow tip so I’m interested to see if that stays and if all her tail feathers come in that way.

Eeep, I realised I missed posts because previously I was constructing a reply for so long (walked away from the computer). So LBJ, I do understand how busy it will be. We traveled to a sleepy little coastal town and since we were a school slept on the floor of a classroom of a local school. Hi Everyone! Sorry I haven’t been on for a while… I have some bad news. About a month ago, My aunt’s rabbit Buttercup had to be put to sleep. He had horrible fly strike and no one noticed it before it got too bad because of his long fur. He didn’t seem like he was in pain either (Probably because bunnies are really good at hiding it). RIP little Buttercup . I also have some good news to cheer everyone up! I Got a bunch of those “DIY put together wire storage” things and I am going to make Reese her own bunny mansion! Also, it is big enough that if I get another rabbit, it can be turned into two cages on top of each other as a not permanent thing while they are bonding! Some days you’d rather just skip… Today I found out that my bicycle was damaged because of a leak in the roof of the communal storage shed. I’ve informed the landlords for the second time in 4 weeks now, urging them to do something because this leak is a major fire hazard. Now that my back is acting up I can’t use my bike, so I didn’t notice that my bicycle bags had gotten wet. Today we had a rain burst which flooded several towns in the area, so I checked our storage shed, and the water was dripping from the ceiling. My bicycle bags were in full bloom, covered in white fluffy spots and smelling awful These things are quite important because people here do their groceries mostly by bike, and I had bought a sturdy set worth €70. As a last resort I scrubbed them with a concentrated cleaner and rinsed them with very hot water. They’re hanging outside to dry now, I hope that they can be saved.

After cleaning up that huge mess in the bathroom, I walked into the living room and noticed Breintje acting weird. He can’t get comfy and is breathing quicker than normal. He’s experiencing gas pains and refusing any food. I’ve cleaned his litter box, massaged his tummy and put him on simethicone. He’s laying in his cage now, surrounded by tasty treats. Hoping he’ll take a nibble again soon. He does seem to be thankful for all the attention, stretching out whenever I pet him. Poor bun… He often has this during moult, and it’s a big one this time.

Update: 2:30 in the morning: I heard a gurgling sound during the tummy massage I just gave him. After 2 hours of tummy massages and simethicone he took a treat out of my hand, and he’s now carefully nibbling on a bit of hay. He also put up quite a fight when I wanted to administer more simethicone, and is now grooming himself (because he’s got spots of it everywhere on his face).
Update: 2:50 in the morning: we have poop! A big mushy blob, put at least we’ve got output. He’s muching on some carrot tops now.

Cheeky, yes he’s cheeky again alright. And uncooperative all the way… It’s 6 in the morning now, and I was getting ready for bed because we finally had firm poops.

But before saying goodnight I wanted to check if he had a clean bottom. So I put him on the towel on the dining table, tried to wash him, and he suddenly went wild. He kicked his thumpers out, did some sort of backflip, fell on his back on a hard wooden chair, and dropped on the floor landing on all fours. Haven’t had such a scare in ages… He’s fine of course, the fluffy little b@stard. A bit of character is cute, but you’ll need 3 sets of hands to hold down a stubborn Nethie who has decided to be uncooperative to the max.

Time to catch some sleep, it’s light outside already.

I woke up this morning to find my living room destroyed, contents of my handbag all over the floor, stuff everywhere. For a second I thought I’d been robbed, but no.

I had left a f#@king banana in my handbag yesterday because I was being really unhealthy and got Burger King for lunch instead of eating what I packed ? and a certain bold and cheeky bun could sense it. He pulled my handbag off the coffee table, knocking everything on the floor, then climbed inside my bag, and dragged everything out until he found that banana. He ate almost half of it, skin and all! Luckily I’m off today so I can keep an eye on him because he also ate a couple of receipts and a scrunchie, and that’s a lot more banana than he’d usually get…

hahaha while we are on the subject of naughty buns causing a mess…. Last week as I was cleaning up after the buns, I emptied Quincy’s litter trays and set the trash bag on the table while I cleaned the trays and replaced fresh litter… After leaving the bedroom to come clean Opehlia’s trays out, I was greeted by a very naughty bunny who was insistent on having Quincy’s leftover alfalfa crumbs!  I clogged my shop vac trying to get this crap (literally) off the floor!!

Poop everywhere! Apparently she got on the chair and was able to pull the bag off the table… note to self, I can’t use the table to store stuff while I am cleaning!

Speaking of Ophelia… I had a dream last night. There was a girl bunny in the boys’ room. She was solid white? Or cream color? And I just remember her name was Ophelia. How she got in their room is beyond me though. LOL Weird, huh?

OMG, I just got done cleaning the rabbit room. I was REALLY cleaning. I washed the rug under their litter box, their litter box and screen, all their junk. I vacuumed with the Dyson instead of just the shop vac (shop vac first, then Dyson). They have been shedding EVERYWHERE and I needed to get all the fur and hay out of the carpet (I can still see little hay specks stuck in there). My parents will be coming to take care of them starting Friday. I’m sure they will have completely destroyed the room by then. *sigh* I swear, it doesn’t matter how thoroughly I clean their room. It doesn’t take long for them to make a mess. What I don’t like about the litter screen is that it seems to make the poos stick to their feet more. So when they jump out of the box, they take some with them and deposit them on the floor. I flip it over every night to get rid of any poos sitting on top. Oh well, at least Leopold doesn’t dig in the litter box anymore. That was WAY worse than picking up stray poos.

Breintje seems to be doing alright again: he’s active and HUNGRY! We’re feeding him a bit extra during the moult. It’s coming through very quickly now, he looks even worse than before. We’ve got the moult blues here… “Baby please let go, baby please let go, baby please let go of all that bad ol’ fur, you know we love you so, but baby please let go…”

Yay, I’m making a wedding dress for a LARP, and I love practicing all those new techniques and learning more about sewing. I’ve learned how to draw and sew a sloper, which is a perfect copy of someone’s body shape. It’s made by measuring someone and then drawing a skin-tight fitting bodice pattern. You sew the sloper from a cheap yet sturdy fabric, and it is a sort of mould to model other clothes onto. After you’ve made a sloper you can alter that pattern easily to create very form-fitting clothing. It’s my first experience in this style of tailoring, and a real challenge to make things fit perfectly. Most LARP clothes are baggy so people can wear thermal underwear under them. To prevent the poor gal from freezing in her satin dress, I made a skin-tight dress out of wool, which has the same shape as the wedding dress and detachable sleeves.

This year I got two major donations: one was a huge donation of horribly ugly fabrics which are great for those try-outs. Think your granny’s curtains with pink and purple flowers on them, or something so garishly patterned that Screech from Saved by the Bell wouldn’t want to be caught with it. *snort, giggle* The real dress will be made from another donation, I now have 3 m of cream white satin and more white lace than you can shake a stick at

I’ve been spending half my week living with my boyfriend and half my week home with my buns, just while I’m trying to work on my thesis project. My mom kindly agreed to mind the rabbits while I’m gone, but oh my god the woman spoils them!!
Who ever heard of rabbits so spoiled, that they turn their noses up at their pellets and chew treats!

Unfortunately, Yumi is a sulky bunny, and upon my return a was greeted with the dreaded bunny butt. I wasn’t to touch her, and when I tried she gave me her little sassy grunts and feet flicks.

It took her 5 hours but I’ve finally earned my forgiveness…until I leave again on Tuesday *sigh*

Happy birthday Q8! I keep forgetting we are almost birthday buddies (mine is Monday).

The eclipse is sort of a sore subject for me. We are in the path of totality where I live. BUT, we had asked my mother-in-law to get us a condo in Colorado in August. Originally she had us booked for over my birthday (yay!) and then she changed it. We will now be gone during the eclipse. It’s only 95% there. To get to the path of totality, it’s a 3.5 hour drive to Wyoming. My husband doesn’t want to do it because I’m sure the traffic will be out of control crazy (people from Colorado making the drive up there). I’m pretty upset about it, actually.

I don’t think I would have taken the day off of work, necessarily. I’m sure everyone will just go outside to see the eclipse as it peaks (they have glasses in the office, I assume for that purpose). But a bunch of my coworkers are actually requesting a day of vacation for that day. My boss knew I was going to be gone. But he was like “uh, someone needs to be here that day”. LOL They are having a ton of events here and they are expecting to close down the highways in a few places. I don’t think they will close school. I imagine they will just take all the kids outside. I believe they have glasses for all the kids. The local natural resources district paid for them.

So… most of the modes in the camera do not take single pictures. Instead it is a burst and then you select the one that you want. The problem is, I can’t seem to figure out how to do much else besides that.

We had a solar eclipse last year, and it was pretty amazing, I’m sure, though, that even if it is “only” 95% there you’ll still enjoy it. It’s an impressive thing to witness! I’m not sure if they closed the highways here, but kids wore eclipse glasses at school as well, it is very dangerous if you don’t. When it happened here, I used the glasses and followed all the precautions, but still my eyes were sore the following day.

Thank you Yilina ^_^ I’ve been sewing since I was 5, but mostly by hand. I made doll clothes for my classmates when I was young and did a lot of embroidery. My mom taught me those basics, and I picked it up very quickly.
When we started a LARP club several years ago we had a woman who was really great at sewing who did our costumes, and I often assisted her and learned a lot of techniques. When she left I took over, been making real costumes for 4 years now. I learned basic techniques like seams and finishing edges from her, and taught myself the rest on the internet, looking up things whenever I needed them. My next challenge is making patterns and working with fine fabrics.

Great that you’re picking up this awesome hobby I definitely have tips:
– Learn from a pro, but also look up new stuff on YouTube. Some people can be rather set in their ways after several years, so it’s always good to explore.
– Ask people why they use certain techniques or fabrics, it’ll give you more insight. Insight and “a feel for it” is better than specific knowledge.
– Learn to sew by hand, you’ll always need it to finish off garments, and it’s a very useful skill in general.
– Don’t skimp on basic materials, good quality will last you a long time. The most important thing is good fabric scissors, with which you only cut fabrics so it won’t dull (no interfacing and NO paper, because they’ll dull it rapidly).
– Practice the basics on cheap, sturdy and non-stretchy fabrics, so you won’t have to bother with special techniques for stretch fabrics.
– This is a hobby that will develop over the years, so choose projects which match your skill level to avoid being disappointed.
– Practice, practice and practice, and have loads of fun doing so

About choosing a machine:

– When buying a sewing machine, think of the things you want to make with it: do you want to sew leather, or quilts, or do you want decorative stitches for lacework etc?
– Try out the machine: how noisy is it on the fastest setting? This can be important if you live in an apartment.
– Buy something from a big brand so it’s easier to buy accesories for your machine. For instance: a special quilt foot etc. I’m very pleased with my Brother sewing machine and their range of accesories, I have the 200 NX model with all kinds of decorative stitches. It’s partially computerised and has functions like auto-sew for long stretches of fabric. I also really like the “speed selection switch”. You can set a certain maximum speed on this machine, so when you push the pedal down fully it won’t go ultra-fast. That’s very handy for working with fine fabrics.
– Some sewing machine shops have discount models: high price range machines which were used as showroom machines or are second hand and barely used. I’ve bought one of these at half price, and it was the best decision ever. If you want to do more decorative sewing like those fancy edges, you’ll soon outgrow the entry level models.
– Ask if the sewing machine shop does repairs and maintenance for your sewing machine, some shops in your area may only accept work on older non-computerised models. Also look up what maintenance you’ll have to do by yourself. For instance: my machine doesn’t need regular oiling, which is a big plus. But other models may need oiling or other cleaning steps, so check up on that before you buy.

My grandmother had a sewing school but, unfortunately she had to close it down before I was even born and I hardly had any chance to learn from her (she taught me how to cook, though ). However, I’ve always been interested in sewing and I recently learnt of a professional sewing school really close to me where I can get private lessons.

I had a 5 hours trial with the teacher a month a go, and it went so well! I made a tailored pencil skirt for myself from scratch, with my measurements, I’m so proud of it . I cannot wear it, though, as I didn’t choose the right fabric. The teacher told me to buy some fabric from a shop but I thought it’d be only for practising. So I chose the cheapest, almost-transparent, ugly-as-hell one .

I’m really exited to start the course. It’ll will be 100 hours long and I already have the syllabus for it. Do you think that 100 hours is enough to learn the basics?

Thank you, jerseygirl, for your advise! I’m not sure if there are many stores where I can get 2nd hand fabrics, but the on-line 2nd hand market here (like “craiglist”) is huge. I’ll ask my teacher too. I’m very excited to start! I may post some pictures here of my “creations”, if I am brave enough .

You’re welcome Yilina, I always love it when people pick up craftsy hobbies and I’ll be happy to advise them It’s such a great outlet for your creativity and you can nearly always work on your projects. Sick day? Bundle up in bed with some crochet or some hand sewing. Long train journey? Get those knitting needles clicking ^_^ I often carry around a project in my bag to fill in those empty minutes, and it often leads to great conversations with people.

It really can’t be expressed in hours how long someone will take to learn the basics. It depends on your previous experience (have you done any crafty hobbies before?), and on personal factors like learning style. Some people learn by reading up on techniques to develop insight, others are more visual and need to see it done for them to pick it up, and another may prefer a more hands-on approach and needs to experiment often. There’s no pass or fail here, it’s just picking up new skills. Take all the time you need, as long as you’re having fun

Some basic skills I’d say are useful:

– Basic fabric knowledge: differences between basic fabrics and how to wash, iron, cut and sew those fabrics.
– More about fabrics: wrong side, right side and direction of the thread
– Sewing by hand: necessary for sewing on buttons, basting pieces together before sewing etc.
– Learning how to work with your machine, exploring the different options
– Basic seams and sewing techniques to prevent fraying of seam edges
– Making hems and edges
– Sewing in zippers
– Sewing buttons on and making buttonholes with your machine
– Working with interfacing
– Learning how to read patterns and how to transfer them onto your fabric
– Learning how to sew darts

PS: Regular pieces of tailor’s chalk are awful, skip the whole mess. There are (refillable) tailor’s chalk pens, these work so much better to draw lines.

PPS: When working with second-hand fabrics or wool, prevent getting more out of the deal than you bargained for. Put the items in a sturdy bag and freeze them for at least 2 days to kill off any fleas and eggs, dust mites or other creepy crawlies.

The eclipse was a total bust, we have complete cloud coverage, I couldn’t see anything. I took Otis with me to check, and he got very freaked out. Dface: My Yohio reacted with fear towards mashed pumpkin. Looked at the plate in disgust, then backed up against the wall and just sat there, staring at the horrific dab of pumpkin. I remember Charlie’s Angel’s Olly reacted with fear when she tried to offer him a strawberry.

Effi had a check-up apt with her orthopedist yesterday. She is doing better, her problem is inoperable, so physiotherapy and pain management is what we’ll do. She has her first physiotherapy session Sept 15. We have changed her activities a bit – no more playing with other dogs, no more fetching ball, strict warm-up 10-15 minutes before she gets off-the-leash-time. Vet said it was ok if she wanted to throw a spruce cone or a stick now and then =/ She does seem happy and the awful rapid panting has stopped – but the prognosis is unsure. It can go either way. Some dogs with this diagnosis get a lot better with time (just like humans with these types of age-related changes to their lower back).

Today we went mushroom-hunting and in the car home, I found two deer ticks crawling on me =( =( =(

Glad to hear that the panting has stopped, isn’t that a sign of pain/distress in dogs? Keeping her active, but none too active sounds like the same advice you’d give an ageing human. Hope that the therapy and pain meds will help her!

Had a lot of fun at the DIY shop today. I took my mobility scooter to the DIY shop because needed a draft stopper for my front door. Have to keep that horrible weed smell out. The people who live across from us are on drugs almost daily, and it stinks to high heaven. I asked the sales lady for some advice, and she had to discuss it with a colleague. Then she said to me: “I know where to find one, just walk with me!” And then she stood there with huge eyes and a massively shocked expression on her face. “Oh sorry!!!” 
I nearly rolled out of my chair laughing  I told her: “Well if you can’t joke about it anymore, what’s left to do?”, and she had a good laugh too.

In Dutch the phrase “Follow me please”, is “Walk with me please”, and people use it as a standard sentence. Sometimes this leads to a huge embarrassment when the person who’s spoken to can’t walk, but that’s all the more fun. My dad’s even cheekier, he goes on: “Hurrah, will I be able to walk again?!” Let’s say a paternity test is not necessary

1: this past weekend I went to the 4-H Fair and got some really high placings, poultry 2nd place, rabbits 1st place, beef cows 1st place
2: my cow got bred last night,
3: my barn for the goats is getting some big progress made on it.
4: my aunt surprised me and my parents by paying for a water line to be dug and put in (also for the barn)

Since all of my art stuff is disorganised and all over the place in the spare room (and the spare room is a mess/dumping ground), I bought myself a new sketchbook and a couple of pencils. I’ve been feeling the itch to do some drawing recently so hopefully I can get into the swing of things. It’s been several years since I’ve done art on a regular basis. I’m very much out of practice.

I went to another cat show on the weekend to ogle the gorgeous Somalis, I had a couple of non-urgent questions for the breeder but I didn’t have much time and she was super busy so I didn’t get to chat with her but can just send her an e-mail. We’re at the time now where based on her 6-10 month time frame that there could very well be a kitten developing with our name on it So excited.

It’s final, Tambor loves my husband more than me. I’d been suspecting it for a while and he’d tease about it but didn’t believe him. Silly me ;P. After all, I never pick him up, always ask permission to pet him and teach him tricks (= give him treats).

So, both us us sat at the same distance from Tambor and put our hands in the way we do when we want to pet him. He ran towards my husband. Tried again, he went to him. Then, we switched sides and again there he goes running towards him.

Well, the will of bunnies cannot be broken ;-). At least he seems to like me too a bit -lol!.

This reminded me of something I do with my sisters dog. I am with her kids after school twice a week and we normally take the dog out for a walk. So he’s been used to me being around the place. One time I said exuberantly “WHO’S YOUR BEST FRIEND?!” and he came right up to me. Did it again, same result.
So the kids automatically started saying it and he’d still come up to me most the time. That really annoyed my nephew.
So now it’s a bit of a game that we do.
I really think that it is just a phrase the dog associated with me and that is why he comes to me most of the time. Plus, Im the visitor so he’s looking for my attention also. But I won’t be telling the kids this theory.

Yilina, sorry to only be getting to your qu about sewing just now. Like you, it’s something id be interested to learn. But I don’t really have any sewing skills. I learnt the basics in year 8 and 9 in high school. I did complete a nice, soft, button up shirt. And managed to put the button holes horizontal instead of vertical. Haha. It wasn’t to noticeable since it was a patterned fabric with black background.

I think had I made the pencil skirt like you, Id want to make 2 more right away so that everything stayed in my memory better. And I’d need to take detailed notes also, I reckon. But as Ellie mentioned, everyone has different learning styles. Some may see and attempt something once and be able to repeat it easily at any time. Half their luck! My niece when younger (now 14) could watch a you tube craft video a couple times them make the item. It will be interesting when she does some sewing modules at school.

Ellie, good advice about freezing second hand fabric! It’s not something I’d thought about, tbh!

@jersey: Honestly I never thought about it either until I heard about what happened to the old ladies at our local Red Cross organisation. I used to volunteer for their First Aid division, and they were in the Welfare division. One of their major activities was collecting second hand clothing and distributing them to poor families. Turned out that one of the donations came from a household which was infected with scabies, and they all had to get treatment

My own main hobbies are reading/book collecting, doing 3D art in Daz Studio (which is free but amassing the models you need to do good scenes can get pricey), and PC gaming (as I said in my introductory post a while back, I play Guild Wars 2, but also a lot of other games, mostly strategy/war – I’ve been playing the Civilization and Galactic Civilizations series for two decades or more now).

Welcome back LBJ, I’m glad that you had a good time. I’d love to see some of your pictures.

I also learned to sew when I was young, my mum is a patchwork and quilter and made lots of our clothes growing up (also lots of quilts). I was also pretty good at sewing but I just don’t have the passion for it that my mum has. Now any time I try to learn again I just get impatient with it, lol. The last thing I sewed was a lamp shade. My sister gave me a lamp she didn’t want, had a nice round frame but an awful pink sequined shade. I have my own sewing machine but I’ve never used it and it’s rather daunting, I would love to be able to sew things should the need arise. I’m good at cross stitch, though I’m not sure that counts, lol.

Bluh, I’ve been up all night with Breintje AGAIN… The moult upset his gut, and he had mushy poop all over the carpet in more than 6 spots. As soon as I noticed I put him in his cage to monitor him. His gut was gurgling loudly, so I suspect he had gas as well. We spent the night with tummy massages and simeticone. I went to bed at 5:30 for a nap and when I got up at 10 he still had mushy poop. After his morning pellets it slowly firmed, and I let him out just now.

His behaviour is a bit odd. Normally he absolutely wants to be left alone in the afternoon, and is grumpy when you disturb him. But now he’s all over me with cuddles and licks. Can rabbits be thankful for all your care? Is this how they would express that?

Ellie, I’m sorry to hear he’s had another tummy upset. I do think they somehow sense that we have been trying to help them. My Yohio became truly bonded to me after a long bout of syringe-feeding. He wasn’t happy while it was going on, but as soon as he was well again, he was more affectionate than he’d ever been before. That was when he started to sleep on my bed instead of under it.

@jersey: LOL, we had a good laugh about it when I woke up. Bas instantly said: that’s SO you! We’ve got it figured out pretty well now, he goes to bed early with a good book and I sneak in later at night. If he wakes up at all it doesn’t bother him. Same thing in the morning: he gets out of bed earlier than I do, but I usually fall asleep right away again. We have the agreement that he wakes me up before 12, so I don’t become an extreme night-owl.

Breintje is eating well and his stools are firm again. I don’t think it’s a tooth issue, because we never encountered any big issues at the vet, but I’ll keep it in mind if the problems recur. Tooth troubles are more common for dwarfs. Somehow it often happens during his moult, so we think it’s because he swallows loose hairs.

I don’t know how we’re going to go with getting a cat. Dory was repeatedly screaming her head off this morning. I finally looked out the window and saw a cat out in the yard so I went out and scared it off. I also covered Dory’s cage with her sheet for 15 minutes and she’s been fine ever since. Does this mean that whenever our kitten walks past she is going to scream? Do I need to get a plush cat and train her not to react to it?

My next-door neighbor has a whole bunch of cats that she feeds around the big tree in the yard outside our apartment building – there’s usually a ring of dishes around that tree – so that’s a darn good reason for me, on top of all the other good reasons, to always make sure Panda and Fernando stay inside. i think they know they’re pretty safe inside a building and inside a big condo and X-pen to boot, but I still worry.

Well, I’m having a bad day. I wasn’t feeling well all weekend. Sort of on and off. I decided to call in sick to work today because I still wasn’t feeling all that great. I went to the doctor and to the store to pick up some medication. When I got home, I realized there was an email from someone I had a meeting with. This was almost 2 hours after our meeting was supposed to take place. I had not seen it on my calendar earlier that day (there were department meetings, which I knew about, and they had pushed this one off the page on my calendar). I feel absolutely awful. Not because I was sick, but because I failed to email the person to tell them I couldn’t make the meeting and they had waited for me not knowing. How could I be so dumb? It is so unlike me. But I wasn’t thinking straight for a good portion of the weekend either. *sigh* This is not how I wanted things to go once I got home from my trip. Sorry… just needed to vent a bit. I feel really bad.

She was such a bingo fanatic: she went to those high-stakes bingo halls frequented by very old but very dedicated ladies. One day she came home giggling like a schoolgirl, holding a pamphlet. Jersey. Thanks for asking. He is still as lovely. But i feel as if it Kyra, mark II. Currently i mix biscuits with pedigree wet food, as yesterday he gobbled it up!! Of course, today he licked all the pate off and leaves the biscuits. EXACTLY what Kyra used to do.
So I’ll be buying up turkey breats tomorrow to cook and see if he gobbles up that. He so desperately needs to put weight on.

Tricky puppy being devious about eating habits

I do worry about Dory, she fell off her perch while sleeping again last night. It happens about once a week. I wake up to the flapping as she tries to stop herself from falling and always cringe when I hear her hit the bottom of the cage. If I don’t hear her climb straight back up I go and check on her. I don’t know what’s causing it, according to everything I’ve read her perches are the appropriate size for her species, she does have the one bad foot but she doesn’t struggle with that climbing around during the day. Bad dreams maybe, I don’t know. I think a smaller perch would be easier for her to grip if she started falling, but smaller perches aren’t good for her feet or nails and cause her one curled toe to be more curled. I know feeding pellets can cause behavioural twitches for Eclectus but I don’t think it’s that because it should be quite regular and a visible issue during the day as well. Plus she only gets 1 teaspoon a day. I just worry that one night she’s going to fall and break her neck or similar.

Thanks guys. I do feel better today. I decided to go to work. Whatever you do, don’t ask Dr. Google about Colorado and illnesses. The real doctor doesn’t know what’s wrong with me. He said influenza A had been reported, but he doubted that was it. As for the person I accidentally stood up, I don’t think they were very understanding unfortunately. I really do feel terrible. They weren’t a coworker or colleague. They were a “client”, I guess you would call them. So yeah, I’ve been beating myself up pretty bad. Like I said, it just isn’t like me to do something like that. I certainly didn’t want to inconvenience anyone. I think he may have even taken time off of work for our meeting.

Az, that must have been a shock the first time you heard her fall. I never thought about things like that happening. Is their anything you could put on the cage floor for overnight that would soften the fall at all?

Baloo, ate half a tin of Pedigree this morning. No kibble. That is what i presented to him first. He sniffed it and walked away. It breaks my heart as you just know he must be sooooo hungry. So a can of Pedigree he got. Good for him or not? at least he’s getting something in him….

LBJ, whenever I mess up in work (usually happens around Christmas where at least one or two orders don’t get shipped/get shipped wrongly) I find most people are quite forgiving when they get presents. I don’t know exactly how your company works, but in that situation I would send a nice bottle of wine with an apology card, and ask could you reschedule. I think it works because they really believe it was an honest mistake and you truly are sorry, and also free wine!

Of course that depends on how important a client they were. I work for a wine importers so hotels, wedding orders, corporate clients, very rich people etc would get extra special treatment. I probably wouldn’t bother going so above and beyond for a standard customer unless I really messed them around.

I’m having a really rubbish week. My back is really killing me, things with my boyfriend moving nearer me are taking far longer to sort out than we expected and I can’t drive up to see him because of my back and to top it all off, my best friend just boarded a plane to Australia yesterday and will be gone at least a year. I’m feeling really sorry for myself ?

On the plus side, I’ve never seen Tony do as many flops as he has this last week. He seems so happy with his new love! Carmela hasn’t flopped yet but she’s SO much more confident tham she was before. It’s really sweet.

TM – I work for the government, so I don’t think my boss would want me to send anyone a bottle of wine. I did hurry up and process his paperwork though. Hopefully a speedy turnaround will be enough?

Jersey – I’m better, but the doctor didn’t give me anything. They didn’t seem to know what was wrong with me. They said “viral” or I “ate something bad”. Considering no one else was sick, I’m going to go with Door 2.

VB- Is it possible that the effort of eating hard food is actually what makes him not eat it? I had rescue cats and hedgehogs that were starved for long periods or malnourished and they seemed to struggle with hard food-their jaw muscles were weak and they couldnt use their bite force as well, but they would devour soft food, I only say cause you’ve mentioned his muscle wastage?

Baloo had a particularly stiff and limpy wake up this morning. I can’t imagine he is not in pain….
Although his breakie went down rather well (yay!) I’m very concerned about his mobility.
He’s had a good level of food for a month now… surely there would be some improvement

He’ll be having a blood test and x-ray when he goes back to the rescue for his neuter in 10 days to rule out any nasties.

I’m tempted to take him to my vets on Monday to get some more info about muscle atrophy, wastage and maybe some Metacam to tide him over.
