        Happy new year everyone!

I have real problems with kingston at the mo.  All over christmas he has been having gloopy cecals and yesterday when i got him out of his cage he has mega clingons!  Loads of poo is just matted to his furry little bottom and i tried everything to get him to sit still while i tried to get it off.

All attempts failed and the only thing i really achieved was massively p***ing him off and earning myself the bunnie butt all night!  Every time i talked to him he just thumped his feet!

To help with his poo i have tried limiting him to just hay for a while but it is to early to tell if the problem has fixed itself yet.

What should i do about his gloopy poo and clingon infested butt?!

Don’t go near him with scissors!!!! I’m sure that crazy thought never entered your head but it got into mine and I ended up nicking my Guppy. You could try a variety of things, a bunny bath (soaking his bottom in warm water and picking out the matted poo) or you could take him to the vet and get a “sanitary clip” as it was titled on my bill. They’ll trim off the hair and clean him up for you, and my vet only charges $15 for the service (and it’s a pricey clinic), so it’s not terribly expensive.

I think you need to get at the root of his cecal overproduction. I’ve cut back on pellets and seen results. Some posters have recommended cutting pellets completely and just feeding hay and veggies. Ultimately you’ve got to see what works best for both you and your bunny. It can take some time to know what works well but hopefully you wont be dealing with smelly cecals for much longer!

Same thing has been happening to Pudge, but I think i found the culprit (father admits he goes down once a day to check up and give them both treats -_-‘ ) but i cut out all the treats and he’s making a recovery. When his fur matted like that once, I held him and got someone to assist me and they cut out most the mats. I later took him to the vet for a checkup and they managed to remove the rest of the mats/mess. Making him into a bunny burrito might help if you choose to cut the mats your self.

i agree, if it’s very bad, please don’t try and do a haircut yourself. it’s much safer to go to the vet and let them do it. has he has a vet exam lately? the diet could very well be an issue. can you tell us what his daily diets consists of? type and brands of food/hay and what kind of veggies in what amounts? treats if any?

Oh my.   What a situation.   The vet sounds like a good idea.     The scissors I use to trim my buns bum are small sharp hairdressor scissors.  You do have to be real careful if you do that.   Don’t use big scissors it is soo easy to nick and cut the bunny too.

Is someone giving him treats that you dont’ know about?   Could be too much pellets.

I agree too that a visit to the vet is in order here and can you think of anything that he has gotten into?

someone has watched too much Star Trek.    So how is bunny today?  Clean and perky or still poopy butt?  What is the vet saying?

Diet can certainly be the issue and then taking away pellets for a couple of days (just hay and veggies) should clear it up; However if it doesn’t clear quickly or it’s ongoing you’ll want to see a vet as some illnesses can cause poopy bum too.

                        Keep us posted!

His diet mainly consists of barley hay, Wagg rabbit food and cucumber and carrots every few days. The only treats i give him are Pet Pops, basically popcorn for rabbits that they sell here (not sure if they sell it outside of england tho).
I havent seen any cecals today but his butt is still caked and he really stinks

it does sound to me like his diet might be part of the problem. it could be the carrots, they’re very high in suagar and should be fed only in teeny tiny amounts as a treat. i’m not familiar with the pet pops… are they actually popcorn, or what are the ingredients? is the Wagg rabbit food timothy-based, and how mch of it does he get per day? does it have added stuff (corn, seeds, cereal pieces: all NO-NOs for bunnies), or just plain pellets?

rabbits need to have a diet consisting of grass hays primarily, followed by dark green leafy veggies. i’d suggest you cut out the cucumber and carrot all together and begin introducing dark green lettuces and herbs.

can you get him into the vet this week to get him clipped down? that might be the only way you’re going to be able to get all the cecals and matts out safely.

this is an article from rabbit expert Dana Krempels about what to feed, what not to feed and why it’s important…

The wagg rabbit food has mainly pellets and squashed things that look like peas! But he seems to leave the pellets. I give him half a cup per day and a pile of hay, the hay is barley hay which he seems to eat slowly but continuosly.
I think i will cut out the carrot and cucumber because he really smells!

I did the bunny burrito trick today and afer several escapes and many freak-outs by kingston i managed to get rid of all the poop but he still smells horrible down there, is this normal?

Im surprised coz i thought he would be really pissed at me after the burrito but he isnt, lucky me!
I will definately get him some dark leafy greens tho, thanks for the advice everyone

He may think you rescued him from the burrito….

i’m glad you were able to get the poop off! you might try to just bathe his bottom with some warm water…

do you know what the squashed pea things are? what does the packaging say they are? you might need to pick out the pea things altogether unless you can find another food that is just plain timothy pellets… for a rabbit weighing 5 pounds, it’s recommended that they get no more than 1/4 cup pellets per day… so you could also start cutting him back on the pellets. each week give him a bit less and a bit less until he’s down to a good amount.

that’s great he’s not mad at you! the dried poop was probably really yucky and uncomfortable, so maybe he’s just thankful you were able to get it out!

OH good you got the dried poo out.  Feeding buns with things in the pellets bags are usually not good for them.  A good timmy pellet might work better.

Too much pellets can cause these problems too.   IF the problem continues take him to a vet.   Hopefully the change in his diet will work.

I gave kingston some fresh basil today, he really liked it, he doesnt seem to have mushy poop anymore but he still stinks!!!
