According to your profile he IS neutered (as of April 2013), so it doesn’t sound like it should be an issue with hormones.

If his change of behavior was sudden, I would schedule him in for a vet exam. His aggression may be caused by illness or pain.

It could also be that as many rabbits mature they are no longer the cuddle buns they were as baby rabbits and need more independence.

He is at about 10 months so that could be the reason for this – it is probably purely coincidental about your leaving and coming back…

There are a few possibilities :

Most rabbits are cuddly as babies but adults instincts tell them picked up = about to be eaten. So, they don’t like being picked up, in general. As Sarita mentions.
It’s possible he has a medical condition. – As beka mentions
It’s possible something happened with the sitters that either scared or hurt him and he’s now scared of being picked up and handled.

Rule out anything medical with a well bunny checkup and it’s likely it’s just he’s growing up and doesn’t want to be held. You may have to adjust the way you handle him to what he prefers now he is an adult and not a baby. He needs to be able to be handled for grooming or emergencies, but most bunnies prefer it on the ground so I only pick mine up when I need to.

              If you rule out the

Most rabbits don’t want to be held, no. It was the same story with mine, from the previous owners: “The rabbit used to like being held but now it freaks out when we pick it up!” I knew rabbits didn’t like it so I told them that was fine and here I am with Mako

If it’s just happening when you try to hold him, I would stop picking him up and try to interact with him on the ground. Many just hate to be picked up, but are happy to get pets and attention on the floor.
