We got our bunny, Thumper, about a month ago. Since around then my son has been sniffling, sneezing and coughing. I think his issue is more a summer cold than anything and I think it started the weekend before Thump came along. My daughter is another story. She doesn’t seem to be having full out asthma attacks, but she sighs almost like she’s trying to catch her breath.

The 4H breeder where we got Thump said that bunnies do not affect allergies. Our ped said pretty much the same thing. Things that I’ve read here and other places on-line, though, say different.

I have fallen head over heels for the little fuzz-butt. I don’t want to give her up, but the human littles have to come first.

        Any advice? Words of wisdom?

        Many thanks!

        Joanna

It’s possible that she is allergic to the litter or the hay.

Also rabbits don’t get colds like we do – they can have an upper respiratory infection. Is there any discharge from the bunny’s sneezing?

Oh, no, the bunny is healthy. Its my 3 yo son who has the summer cold. Sorry about that.

I hadn’t thought about the hay. Thank you for that!

It’s definitely possible to be allergic to bunnies, though often people are actually allergic to the hay and not so much to the bunny. Do your kids handle the hay? Is the bunny in their room? I’d keep the bunny out of kids rooms and make sure to wash up after handling hay.

It’s probably the hay! Are you feeding timothy right now? You can experiment with other types of hay except for alfalfa. The one most commonly recommended for allergies is orchard grass. There are no worries when it comes to switching hay either…. many have the same nutritional benefits as timothy so no worries there.

My boyfriend’s dad is allergic to all animals (which he dislikes) and even was allergic to his bunny growing up.

Hay can be a huge factor. Timothy hay effects me. I’ve found one that is really less dusty and doesn’t trigger my allergies, but I know there are people that are more sensitive to it.

I’d try Orchard Grass. It smells good and it doesn’t hurt allergies.

I developed terrible asthma from my timothy hay allergy. I switched over to orchard grass hay and everything was good after that.
