This issue has come up a couple of times recently so I thought I’d post this article I came across on Facebook.

This could actually be quite helpful. Can we pin it somewhere?
Haha wow, I live about 45 minutes from this house rabbit society.
yay Columbus!
good article. ![]()
Wish I had of known this about 19 years ago LPT when I was catching a white bodied, grey uppy eared and tailed bunny in my front yard!
My 3 kid’s were between 3 and 8 and between the 4 of us, we cornered him and I pounced! His name was Petey and I think that’s where my start of bunny love came from. I had him (him/her?) for about 2, maybe 3 months till my stupid hubby left the gate open and he got out – bugga! I was worse though…. did you pick up that I let him go outside? And even worse, not having the internet (19 years ago), I fed him veggies only, maybe a good thing I let him outside to eat the grass, I had NO idea he needed hay? And he had no personal house – he pooped and lived under my bed while inside. And there was no way I was handing him in to the vet (like I have with wild birds) cause I knew bunny’s were illegal here. I thought his chances were better with me. By the way – I have never ever let my hubby forget it! And he has never left a gate open again, ha ha ha…….
If I ever come across the picture (only 1) of my kid’s with Petey – I will post it. I know I have it – just where?????
I wonder where he came from Andi? Since rabbits would have been so uncommon there.
I wouldn’t fault yourself for the care you gave him. We can only do to the best of our knowledge at the time. Besides, grass is good. Will do same job as hay.
I caught a stray once and fed it dry rice bubbles and cabbage.
Then I picked up a box of rabbit food- a cereal mix. Lucky I only had him 3 days before found the owners!
A bunny-crazed friend if mine always says about her childhood rabbits and shudders when she thinks of their care in comparison to her rabbits today. They had shelter, ate table scraps and grazed in the garden…but you know what? They all lived to be 13!
He HAD to be someone’s pet Kate – he was white with grey uppy ears and tail. No way was he a wild bunny. I got home from work and had the 3 kid’s in the car and just popped home to grab my mum’s birthday present and was on our way to her house when my headlights caught him in my front yard along with a cat stalking him. I left the car in the middle of the road (ha ha ha) and out we all got!
This is how naive I was…. I door knocked my neighbourhood the next night and no one owned him, and even said where I lived if they heard of a lost bunny and where to find him. And guess where his favourite place was to lay? on my FRONT window sill, in front of the curtain for everyone to see everyday that passed by my house while I was away at work – I didn’t even try to hide him even though I knew they were illegal (I didn’t know the repercussions were that high though…..).
The other thing that gets me (NOW), he used to sleep and poop under my bed – no worries! But I don’t recall any pee!!! If he pee’d under my bed – dam, that cheap commercial carpet I bought for our bedrooms did the trick perfectly! (HUH? Lol!). I don’t recall any smell (and I was SUPER clean back then with my OCD in full force) or any stains.
Thanks for not making me feel bad Kate – I did for the longest time when I learned everything for Henry, even wondering (at that time) if it was good that he got away. I know that answer to that is NO! and we both know why. My hubby never heard the end of it and still doesn’t to this day!(why did he leave a gate open??? We never did cause Blair was only 4 and would go walkabout) – we even searched for him, I was devastated for weeks when I realised he was gone! Maybe why I was determined to own a bunny again, one day!
PS – Rice bubbles????? HA HA HA HA HA HA! I shouldn’t laugh….. I’ve got a funny feeling I may have fed Petey ‘weet-bix’! Isn’t it a rule – if all else fails, feed weet-bix! I know I have for my dog’s – good grief! LOL!
PPS – I then got 2 guinea pig’s, and yep (naughty me) I let them out to roam the yard every weekend (day) and I would NEVER ever do that again now that I know better – but you should have seen us catching them each night to put them to bed, LOL!
I recently had a beautiful black and white English spot in my yard at about 11 PM. I just happened to see it in my driveway as I was taking my Yorkie for a walk that night. Couldn’t get near it and it hopped off towards the neighbors’ so I’m guessing it was one of theirs and I’ve not seen it again. They often allow their bunnies (and other pets, of which they have many) to wander but with foxes/owls/stray dogs and feral cats, etc., plus with snow coming soon it’s not the safest place for that kind of carelessness. Really creams my corn.
I felt so bad for it. I did put out some hay but I don’t think it returned.
Will keep this info for future reference though, thanks LPT! ![]()
Awww….that’s sad, Mimz. There are people who live near my sister in the country who have a bunch of bunnies that they let out loose in their yard, right by a street where cars drive fast. I get so sad when I think about it. People like that don’t deserve bunnies in their lives. ![]()
I know this is random for this article but, I need some bunny help. I just got a bunny yesterday from a friend. Her name is Oreo. She’s very fat and her chin actually jiggles when she hops
it’s pretty cute, but is she overweight? On top of that, she ate one to two apples a day before I got her and I’m not sure if that caused it, but now she has terrible poppy butt. To be honest, I was pretty much laughed at for taking on such a task, but I honestly love her. She doesn’t pay me much attention yet, but I took off a wall of her cage so she can come out whenever she likes to. She’s already been out once and hopped all around the house! When she gets use to everything, I want her to be a free reign bunny. Were working on litter training
If anyone has any tips for this sweet girl, let me know.

I found a small white and grey rabbit in my back garden. It’s was about 8am and I was washing my breakfast bowl over the sink which faces a window looking into the garden and to my horror there was this rabbit with a magpie attacking it. The magpie was kind of hovering over it and swooping in to peck it. I ran out and the magpie went and the rabbit went and hid under the bush. I picked up the rabbit (no struggle at all) and brought it inside. I didn’t know anything about rabbits at the time so I out it in a large cardboard box with some grass clippings (I know!) and various fruit and veg I had in the house at that moment and water and went to work (4 hour shift). When I got home I let him/her out of the box and he/she kind of slowly hopped around the place. It didn’t poo or eat but at this time I didn’t know that was fatal I just though once it’s over the scare it will start eating. I asked around if anyone lost a rabbit and no one did. It died around 10pm ![]()

this is so crazy! i grew up in columbus and i would see wild bunnies all the time… i cant recall ever seeing a domestic rabbit out in about though. Ohio’s earth is clay and dirt so its perfect for rabbit holes haha. i remember one time i was in the middle of the city and in an empty lot, there was a bunny family hopping around. it was night time, it was just odd to me that here in the middle of the city here is a wild bunny family
