Are there any Wild Rabbits where you live? (Wild Bun Pics)

We have Snow Shoe Hares which are just so incredibly beautiful in winter and summer. These pics were taken this morning by my brother-in-laws Mom, right outside her house. There are a lot of them around there. So many that there is a road close by called “Rue Lapin” (Rabbit Road). I really need to move there!!!!

Hope these little guys are careful, as she also posted pics of a lynx nearby this morning.

They are beautiful!
There are no wild ones where I live now, but there was a lot of them where I grow up.
During the hunting season hunters would usually pass by our house. Father would always send them in a totally opposite direction of the bunnies. To this day I dont think any of them cought any rabbit.
And last year when I was driving to the field work with my professor we came acrose huge, and I mean huuuge bun siting on the dirt road by the Danube. We stopped and she took a picture. I’ll check if she still has it, and if she can send it to me.
He was around 1m high sitting easily.

Snowshoe hares… how gorgeous. I bet it’s stunning watching them change their coats too.

Around here, we’re too suburban to have wild rabbits in the yard, but nearby there’s a few parks that have a healthy population of wild rabbits. Which is nice, but also not so nice because they’re invasive here

As a kid, when we used to visit my grandparents on their farm, I used to crawl around with a pair of binoculars watching all the rabbits. I even caught a couple with my bare hands once, which looking back on it must have been so stressful to the poor bunnies, but we released them again afterwards.

I don’t have rabbits exactly where I live either. I’m in the middle of a busy City. I hate the City. My heart has always been in the country. My sister and her mother-in-law (who took the pics) live about 40 minutes away in the country, basically in the woods and they have so much wildlife to watch: Moose, deer, coyotes, beavers, squirrels, bunnies, porcupines. I’m jealous as I love nature so much. Well, they can keep their coyotoes….And they can also take the urban raccoons that destroy our garbage bags.

My dream is to one day move out to the country with my horse and have all sorts of bunnies in my yard.

Those hares are beautiful, LPT! How lucky she could take so many pix of them! We have rabbits here, they live in the parks, but there arenot as many as there used to be. These last few years the population has shrunk a lot. There are outbreaks of myxo every year and we also have RVD. It makes me a bit sad, because I really love the wild rabbits. But then I don’t mind if they dig up my garden and eat the carrot-tops and the chives and the marigolds. Many people hate wild rabbits because they ruin their gardens.

In the countryside we have European hares. They don’t change color, which is probably why they survive here where there’s rarely any snow. They are very big. Niamian, the huge rabbit you saw must’ve been a hare? They’re so big they can be mistaken for small deer from a distance.

I’m in the U.S., in the southeast and we have Eastern Cottontails here. I live in the city, so I rarely see any around here, although I have had ones in the past that would come and eat the bird seed that I put on the ground. The rabbit sanctuary where I volunteer is about 20 miles away and in a rural area, although it is unfortunately getting over developed and all the old farms and pastures are disappearing. But the sanctuary is on 30 acres, so in addition to the domestic rabbits cared for there, there are always a lot of wild cottontails.

Yes Bam you are right it was a hare. I kind a mix it because wild rabbits here are hares but its the same name for them on Serbian. Lol this sounded confusing, hopefully you know what I meant.

You and me both. In the suburbs with a decent garden is as much as I can tolerate of the city, fortunately we have some very local brushtail possums, they’re always running across our roof (which many people hate) but it makes me laugh every time I hear it. I’ve always wanted to live on a bit of land, not much just 2-5 acres or so. When I’m not involved with rabbits I love to get out and do bird photography. I do have some wild rabbit photos somewhere from when I’ve been out and about, if I can find them I’ll post some up.

Those hares are gorgeous! We’ve got a ton of wild rabbits in my area, mostly eastern cottontails. I take a walk every evening less for fitness and more to try and spot them having their dinner. My high score for bun spottings in a single walk is 18. Always hoping to beat my own record! :]

We have no wild bunnies in the Middle East – unless you count the odd baby one who escapes the party favour box. But my parents’ backyard in Canadia gets lots of different hoppers. Too bad my mom’s slower than them and never gets a picture.

We have Rabbits and Hares where I live, running around in the farmyards and parks, a bit further up from where I live.

I grew up on a farm so rabbits were aplenty. Though we really only saw them running off the track when we drove home at night. Last year, my brother had trouble with them eating the bark off the new trees he put in. This year, it’s Kangaroos attacking the new trees!  Though, I can’t blame them. There was little left for them to graze on after fire swept through the area.

 I’m going there this weekend so I’ll go out at dusk and see if I spot any rabbits. Not sure if could capture a photo. My phone camera is pretty ordinary.

Is it cheating if I show photos of “wildies” not in their natural habitat? I do have photos of my friends 3 rabbits from when I’ve bunny sat them. I’m always sad when I have to take them back to her.

Huh. And here I was thinkin’ the collective noun for geese was a gaggle, or flock.

Jersey – LOL !!!!! Had to read it again to see what you were getting at…… I often say ‘a truckload’, but “a buttload” ? – Goodness, what an image that conjures up….. LOL
We have loads of rabbits living on islands in the middle of roundabouts…. I’m usually drivnig so don’t have my camera ready !!!
They seem happy, and stress free and undisturbed !!
We also have the “Council housing” of rabbits near our local lake, you can see all their warren entrances in the mounds of grass….. again, never have camera when i need it !!

We also have a buttload of geese here. They have all come back for Spring and are having their babies. I always slow down on the highways near marshes because there are always a ton of them on the side of the road. And I always point my finger at them and say “Stay off the road!!!!”. My husband really thinks I’m crazy…

I think the others must be on my external hard drive, but I just found this one of a Brown (European) Hare. I took it in October last year after doing some bird photography in the morning, driving home I passed this hare resting in the shade of a hay bale. When I backed up the car a bit he sank down to the ground to hide.

Oh man, they are so stinking cute! I’m not really a fan of agoutis as a general rule, but couple it with the wild face and body type and you have a really gorgeous rabbit. I met a pet wild rabbit once, the local rescue took him in at about 9 years of age because his owner could no longer keep him and he was just the sweetest little thing with such big beautiful eyes.

Jersey- Squee!!!! So adorable! I want to kiss all their noses. They remind me of my Olivia. I always found her face and body shape was similar to a wild rabbit.

So I haven’t managed to find my good wild rabbit photos yet, they seem to be mysteriously absent from both of my external hard drives, which is something I need to correct because they’re from a camping trip I took which I have lots of photos from, so I don’t want them to be erased if I have computer troubles (they’re probably on my old laptop).

However, I still found some rabbit photos and some more hare photos

The first rabbit image I thought was a good illustration of camouflage.  European Rabbit.

The rabbit in the following two photos is suffering from myxomatosis. Swollen eyes and discharge is evident though I didn’t think too severe to exclude from posting them. If people don’t like these images I’m happy to remove them (or for a mod to do so if needed). I thought it was a bit odd when I first saw this rabbit that it only slowly hopped away a short distance, usually they fly off as fast as they can in this particular area. Seeing the signs of myxo made sense of the strange behaviour.

And finally, three images from a sequence of a European Hare that happened to cross my path one day. I was very lucky to get any photos at all. I still dream of getting a beautiful image of a hare one day, but you have to know where to sit and wait, and I find them very unreliable. Still, their body shape and movement is fascinating. This one was quite relaxed as he was already on the move rather than having been startled by me. The tail being down is a good indication of this, they lift it and flash the white underneath when they’ve been startled.

I’ve just discovered today that the landscape image of the sick rabbit I took is being used by the Invasive Animals CRC. They have an annual photo competition which I entered a few years ago with that image but in black and white. From memory, one of the conditions of entry was that they could use the image in their own publications and things if they wanted. Today I found it on one of their website pages for the new RHDV strain that’s being released. It’s a bit of a conflict of interest for me being passionate about conservation, and pet rabbits.

I found a beautiful rabbit warren yesterday when I was out with my dog. It was a small hill with trees on it, there were so many holes, really big ones, the tree-roots must’ve provided superb support. It was a Watership Down kind of place.

Not wildies per se, but the locals nearby have bred rabbits for show and when they are done with them they usually let them loose.

This is a former farmed bunny I have dubbed, “Blackavar”, although I couldn’t tell you it’s gender. This year is the third year he has been roaming my neighborhood, probably living under my house in wintertime.

 

 

And this is one of his babies. <3 (Well, the only one I've seen so far.) I've named him Mythril.</p>

 

Wish I could take them in and rehab them, but it’s simply not possible.

these pictures everyone is posting are beautiful! eastern cottontails are fairly common in my neighbourhood and I was able to get a poor quality cell phone picture of one that darted by on my walk at night.

I spent most of my vacation last summer trying to get a picture of the hare that was hanging around our cottage, but they were camera shy!
