Hi, this is my first post on BB.

Anyway, we have several Pear Trees in our yard. The fruit is no good, but I was wondering if I could give the sticks to my rabbit, PJ Funnybunny. Are they okay?

I know that peach wood is not OK, and apple wood is… Not very helpful! Let me see what I can look up!

            Hi PJFunnybunny, welcome to BinkyBunny!

As is usually te case, there is a Dana Krempels article on this very subject.  In it she mentions that some people feed apple/pear leaves and sticks and some are afraid of cyanide poisoning.  Here is the article http://en.allexperts.com/q/Rabbits-703/apple-twigs-rabbit.htm

I do feed my guys apple leaves and twigs occasionally, but I have never fed pear foliage.  The rule of thumb I have read is fruits with a pit like peach, apricot, plum, cherry are bad and should be avoided unless the wood is completely dry and devoid of sap, and the fruits that have multiple seeds (apple, pear, grape vines) are OK to use while green.

EDIT: I manged to find some pears on one of the trees that wern’t rotted or bruised. So, not only will PJ be getting some nice stick to eat, she’ll get fresh pear

Yay Dana to the rescue! Thanks Osprey! Yes pears are O.K. and the cyanide concern is really from the seeds (just like from apples) so it’s best not to let your furred friend have the seeds, but the fruit is A-O.K.!  Check out the Veggie/Fruit List from the House Rabbit Society
